SPECIAL FEATURE | 109 ENTERTAINMENT Music, Theatre & Dance In Terengganu, it is hard to find clubs and bars in town. The only places you may find entertainment such as these are at hotels scattered within Terengganu. Due to strict Muslim beliefs, the people of Terengganu do not find entertainment by partying and dancing till the wee hours of dawn. However, traditional dances and games are more preferred as part of entertainment in this cultured society. Ulik Mayang Terengganu’s most well-known traditional dance is Ulik Mayang. It portrays gentle and graceful dance movements and is one of the beautiful forms of traditional dance in the Terengganu culture. It is believed that this traditional dance was performed to worship and appease the spirits of the sea. However, the beliefs in such spirits have slowly vanished in this modern era and the dance is now performed purely for entertainment. Rodat The rodat ensemble is another type of drum ensemble used primarily as accompaniment to Islamic religious praise singing. Rodat musicians are accompanied by male and female dancers, whom may double up as singers. Wayang Kulit Originally from Terengganu’s neighbouring state, Kelantan, Wayang Kulit is a traditional theatre art-form using puppets and shadow-play illustrating epic tales of the ancient classical Hindu legends, Mahabharata and Ramayana. The puppets are made of buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks. The master puppeteer, known as Tok Dalang will handle the entire show with as many as 45 puppets. Being the solo performer representing all the heroes and heroines in the story, the Tok Dalang is the key of the entire performance. Accompanying the master are strong female singers together with Gamelan music. Traditional Games Wau (kite-flying) One can fly a kite so high at Terengganu due to its windy sea breeze. Flying a kite was once played by farmers after post-harvesting season, but now it attracts people from all walks of life. Kite festivals have encouraged people to be creative in kite- making over the years; however, wau bulan (moon-kite) remains as popular as ever in Terengganu. Gasing (top-spinning) Giant top spinning is a challenging game where it calls for strength, coordination and skills. The gasing when expertly hurled can spin for as long as 2 hours. Gasing competitions are an annual feature in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
