A Glance Of klang Valley Klang Valley – An Introduction Klang Valley, or Lembah Klang in Malay, is named after Klang River, which is associated to the early development of the area as a cluster of tin mining towns in the late 19th century. Situated in the centre of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Klang Valley comprises the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and its adjoining districts in Selangor, namely Gombak, Hulu Langat, Petaling and Klang, covering an area of 2826 square kilometers. Geographically, it is delineated by Titiwangsa Mountain Range to the north and east, and the Strait of Malacca to the west. Being the most vibrant and lively region in the country, Klang Valley is the heartland of Malaysia’s industry and commerce and is always buzzing with vitality. Home to a great number of migrants from other states within Malaysia and foreign workers from Indonesia, Myanmar, India and Nepal, it is considered as the fastest growing region in the country with many more rapidly growing new towns and yet more is believed to develop in the near future. Development of the region took place mainly in the East-West direction (between Gombak and Port Klang) but the urban areas surrounding Kuala Lumpur have since grown south towards the border 6 with Negeri Sembilan and north towards Rawang.

Being in a country which has been growing as multicultural and multi ethnical, the locals are exposed to a variety of food, blended with a mixture of all the traditional dishes of each race. One of these foods is popularly known as Roti Canai which has its origins in Indian culture. Roti literally means ‘bread’ in Hindi which is one of Indian languages, as well as in Malay. The term ‘canai’ instead is believed to have several origins; from Chennai, India where roti canai was served, Channa which is a dish made of spicy gravy that is traditionally served as an accompaniment to roti canai, and the word ‘canai’ that means ‘to roll out the dough’ in Malay language. Roti canai is typical to be prepared circular and flat. There are two known ways of rolling the dough of the roti, either to twirl the dough until it turns into a very thin sheet and then fold it into a circular shape or to spread out the dough as thinly as possible before being folded into the shape. The dough later is grilled with oil. Sometimes, roti canai is made with the dough being tossed and spun in the air. The process adds the term ‘flying’ and turns it into ‘flying roti canai’. Some hawkers serve roti canai after giving it a soft clap with both hands to provide the crispy texture. Regardless how the dough is rolled out and prepared, roti canai is always served together with a bowl of mutton curry. Being a Malaysian’s favorite, roti canai has been derived into a variety of them to ensure every ethnic can enjoy it. Roti Telur Malaysians love their food.
