Labuan The Pearl Of Borneo

Labuan (The Pearl of Borneo) SPECIAL FEATURE Labuan Island Labuan Island, or Pulau Labuan, is a small, duty-free island just off the coast of Sabah in Borneo. Officially the Federal Territory of Labuan, Labuan is made up of the eponymous Labuan Island and six smaller islands and is located off the coast of the state of Sabah in East Malaysia. Labuan’s capital is Victoria and is best known as an offshore financial centre offering international financial and business services via Labuan IBFC since 1990 as well as being an offshore support hub for deepwater oil and gas activities in the region. It is also a tourist destination for people travelling through Sabah, nearby Bruneians and scuba divers. The name Labuan derives from the Malay word labuhan which means harbor. Labuan is often referred to as the “Pearl of Borneo.” Kuraman Island Located off the coast of Federal Territory of Labuan, Kuraman Island is a small tropical island belonging to Malaysia in the South China Sea. It is sparsely populated and is popular with expatriates, divers and those who travel between Labuan and Brunei. The island was also known as the island that plays a role in Sandokan series which is called “Mompracem” back in the old days. Kuraman island has two main beaches and is noted for its large sand pit, pleasant tropical island atmosphere, and fishing. The interior, however, is forested with a range of timbers containing cleared paths for jungle walks. In recent years, large storms have contributed to increased erosion resulting in several areas of vegetation and numerous buildings being washed into the sea. Papan Island Located off Labuan Island, Papan Island has a beautiful landscape with an old colonial lighthouse which was used in 1895. It also possesses a mini agriculture park that showcases fascinating plant life that is to be found in Borneo. It is the perfect getaway for anyone who desires serenity and natures. Papan Island is especially crowded during weekends as most locals go there to relax. Besides relaxing your mind and enjoying the sea breeze, there are also quite a number of activities at the island such as snorkeling, picnics and jungle trekking. 103

Terengganu

SPECIAL FEATURE Islands in Terengganu Redang Island Redang Island is one of the largest islands off the east coast Peninsular Malaysia located in Kuala Nerus District, Terengganu, Malaysia. It is well-known for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and tropical fishes that inhabit numerous reefs, many within 50 feet of the shore. Redang is often compared to Perhentian Islands but the major difference between the islands is that Perhentian Island is more of a backpacker hangout while Redang holds a more up market image with most accommodation being five-star resorts. Pasir Panjang is the largest beach, located on the east side of the island with around half a dozen resorts. However, on the south end, this beach usually has more choppy water and the beaches will have more debris than the beaches around the bend to the north. The north of Pasir Panjang is also well-known to be a great snorkeling spot. Perhentian Island Located at the coast of northeastern Malaysia in the state of Terengganu, Perhentian Islands is approximately 40 miles south of the Thai border. In Malay, the name Perhentian means “stopping point” being relevant to the islands as the islands became a staging point used by traders traveling between Malaysia and Bangkok. “Big Perhentian Islands” and “Small Perhentian Islands” are the two main islands. “Small” attracts more travelers as it has cheaper accommodation, while “Big” is a little more expensive and caters more to families and those who want to avoid the backpacker party scene. Being part of a protected marine park, the island strictly prohibits activities such as collecting corals, fishing and littering. However, littering is still one of the major problems that the island faces. Lang Tengah Island Situated in the state of Terengganu, Lang Tengah Island is truly a tropical jewel of Malaysia’s east coast. The island appeals more to holiday goers who are looking for a quiet tropical island getaway. as the atmosphere here is much quieter compared to commercialized islands nearby like Redang. The tropical waters around Lang Tengah are clear with turquoise hues. The designated marine park in the island has excellent corals and fish life. The water is usually calm during the peak season making it a great place to learn diving. In fact, Lang Tengah is well-known to be a significant diving centre in Malaysia. Lang Tengah has a tropical climate with temperatures steadily around 30 °C and frequent but brief thunderstorms. The 2011 Hong Kong-Chinese film, Love You You was filmed on the Summer Bay Lang Tengah Island Resort. 108

Pahang

Tioman Island SPECIAL FEATURE Tioman Island is a mukim and an island in Rompin District, Pahang, Malaysia. It is located 32 kilometres (20 miles) off the east coast of the state and is some 21 kilometers (13 miles) long and 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) wide. It has seven villages, the largest and most popular one being Kampung Tekek on the central western coast. Tioman Island is a densely forested island which is sparsely inhabited and is surrounded by numerous coral reefs making it a very popular snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing spot. The island also has multiple resorts and chalets for tourists around the island, which has duty-free status. Tioman was even selected as one of the world’s most beautiful islands by TIME Magazine back in the 1970s. How to get to Tioman Island? Majority of visitors opt to take the ferry from the port town of Mersing to get to the island (you can also take a ferry from Tanjung Gemuk). Buses from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing take around seven hours. Once you get to Mersing, the bus terminal is about a 15-minute walk from the jetty where ferries leave for Tioman. You’ll take one of the three daily ferries over to Tioman. Plan on at least two hours for the trip as timetables are subject to change according to the weather such as tides and storms. Boats will sometimes have to wait until there is enough water to depart too. Besides that, sometimes only two ferries will be operating during off-peak seasons. Hence, the lack of passengers might result in cancellation of for mid-afternoon ferry rides so visitors may need to wait until get on the last ride. 115

Kedah

SPECIAL FEATURE Langkawi Island The jewel of Kedah, Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea. Located about 30km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia, Langkawi is a massive island and a home to a bunch of historical attractions, excellent diving opportunities, great fare, dirt-cheap shopping, and an exciting nightlife. Langkawi’s best attractions are best explored by a rented vehicle as the island is large in size. There are several must-see sights that you should not miss out on while you’re at the island. So, check out our comprehensive list of the most popular attractions in Langkawi. How to get to Langkawi? Air Langkawi is connected to several points in Malaysia such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang, as well as several other overseas cities like Singapore, Phuket (Thailand), Seoul (South Korea), cities of Australia, China, and Japan. Most of these cities fly directly to Langkawi. Langkawi Airport is located at Padang Matsirat and is served by airlines like Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia, and Silk Air etc. Car/Bus There is no direct road route to Langkawi but you can drive down with your car or take the bus to any of these following locations: 1. Ferry terminal at Kuala Kedah which is located at the northwestern coast of Malaysia. If you are driving along the North South Expressway (E1), take the exit at Alor Setar Selatan, and follow the signs. It takes about 6 hours to reach Kuala Kedah by car from Kuala Lumpur. 2. Ferry terminal further up at Kuala Perlis takes about an hour or more. Regular buses/ coaches are available between Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Perlis (roughly 8 hours). Buses leave from Pudu Sentral bus station or Hentian Duta bus station in KL. The bus stand at Kuala Perlis is a walking distance from the ferry dock. You will get regular daily ferry services from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis to get to the Kuah Jetty of Langkawi. The express ferry takes about 1 hour 30 minutes from Kuala Kedah and 1 hour 15 minutes from Kuala Perlis to reach Langkawi. There is paid car parking available next to the jetties of both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. 120

Island Hopping SPECIAL FEATURE Pulau Dayang Bunting Langkawi’s second largest uninhabited island, Pulau Dayang Bunting has the picturesque lake od the “Pregnant Woman” surrounded by hills, mangroves, and rainforests. It is easily accessible via a 15-minute boat ride from Kuah Jetty. Its name literally translates to ‘Isle of the Pregnant Maiden’ as it resembles the silhouette of a reclined pregnant lady from afar. Locals also believe barren women will become fertile after swimming in the freshwater lake on the island. Once you’ve reached the jetty, it’s a 15-minute hike to the lake via a concrete stairway through the dense forest. Surrounded by mangrove trees and a limestone formation, the freshwater lake is great for swimming. However, it has an average depth of 10 meters without any shallow area so life jackets are highly recommended for children and swimming novices. Pulau Bidan, Pulau Songsong & Pulau Tepor Located 17 nautical miles north from Penang, these three islands are small islands off the coast of Yan, Kedah, Malaysia which is also an hour’s ride from the northern tip of Penang and relatively untouched by tourists. These islands are also easily overlooked as they are nestled between Penang and Langkawi, the Yan district of Kedah. Clear emerald-colored water, white-sand beaches will definitely be rewarding for those who dare to venture out to Song Song, Bidan and Telur Islands. In the 1970s and 1980s, these islands were used by Australian Defence force personnel and families from Butterworth/Penang as a holiday retreat for a week or two. USEFUTLRCAVOENLTTAICPTS Travel Tips Kuala Lumpur is a magical place filled with huge skyscrapers and beautiful buildings, a thriving arts and culture scenes. It is a feast for the senses and a wonderland of sights, smells, flavors and experiences just waiting to be unearthed. With its warm weather, Kuala Lumpur is a great destination pretty much all year- round. You’re dealing with a hot and wet climate in Malaysia, so make sure that your clothing can stand up to the weather. Be prepared to get hot and sweaty if you’re walking around and always be prepared for a sudden storm (don’t worry, they don’t usually last all day, it’s more of a sudden, crazy storm followed by fine weather). When you decide what to pack for your trip, keep these tips in mind. Clothing  –  The heat and humidity  in Kuala Lumpur  can be really intense, so it’s important for you to pack lots of light and breathable clothing that will help you stay cool. Cotton is an excellent choice, as are fabrics designed to wick away moisture. There’s a significant Muslim community in Malaysia so please dress and behave in a culturally respectful way. It’s just part of being a good human and culturally respectful traveler Comfortable footwear – You’ll most likely be doing a LOT of walking so it’s important you wear sensible shoes that are very comfortable. We recommend packing a pair of sneakers or converse-style shoes as well as flats and sandals. Swimwear – Be sure to put your swimwear in your suitcase so you can take full of advantage of your hotel pool if you have one.  Don’t forget to pack aqua-ear medicine, goggles; swimming cap or whatever else it is you usually like to swim with. Sunscreen – You want to bring back memories from your trip, not sunburn. Keep sunscreen on hand at all times and make sure to apply it frequently. Usually swear and water can wash away this product, so the next time you’re thinking to spend a lot of time outside keep on applying whenever you think it’s needed. Rain gear – It get can rainy in KL and you don’t want that to get in the way of your plans. Be sure to pack a raincoat, a travel sized umbrella or other waterproof gear so you’re prepared for any sort of condition during your trip or you’ll be very cold if your clothes get wet. Medicine bag – Pack a small medicine bag with all your prescription medicines and essentials, just in case you become ill late at night or can’t find a pharmacy. Power adaptors – In Malaysia, power sockets are G Type, which is the boxy one with three thick, rectangular prongs.  Be sure to pack an adaptor so you can charge all your electronics. Pack light – Finally, be sure to pack light! If you love shopping, KL is a bit of a shopper’s wonderland and you’re going to need room in your suitcase for all those new purchases! So, keep it light. 124
