What Makes Up Klang Valley INTRODUCTION Klang Valley (Malay: Lembah Klang) is an area in Malaysia which is centred in Kuala Lumpur, and includes its adjoining cities and towns in the state of Selangor. A more recent alternative reference to this would be Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan Area or Greater Kuala Lumpur. The Klang Valley is geographically delineated by Titiwangsa Mountains to the north and east and the Strait of Malacca to the west. It extends to Rawang in the northwest, Semenyih in the southeast, and Klang and Port Klang in the southwest. The conurbation is the heartland of Malaysia's industry and commerce. As of 2012, the Klang Valley is home to roughly 7.5 million people. Klang Valley is home to a large number of migrants from other states within Malaysia and foreign workers largely from Indonesia, India and Nepal. The valley is named after the Klang River, the principal river that flows through it, which is closely linked to the early development of the area as a cluster of tin mining towns in the late 19th century. Development of the region took place largely in the East-West direction (between Gombak and Port Klang) but the urban areas surrounding Kuala Lumpur have since grown south towards the border with Negeri Sembilan and north towards Rawang. 5

KUALA SELANGOR Places to visit in Selangor Putrajaya Putrajaya is the federal administrative capital, purpose-built during the boom years of the mid-1990s. As a tribute to this period of plenty, everything here is not merely big, but grandiose: government buildings, monuments, public spaces. Critics denounce this excess – its cost has never been revealed – as well as the lack of attention to local influences. Yet it remains a showcase of urban planning and postmodern architecture, and is especially pretty at night. Precinct 1 (Presint 1) is the government quarter, crowned by the green-domed Prime Minister’s Office (Perdana Putra), which is in the French palatial style. Next to it is the Putra Mosque, a pink edifice featuring Persian influences. Walk down to the lakeside, where there is a jetty for Cruise Tasik Putrajaya, which runs gondola rides and cruise-boat rides on the lake. Off the square is one of Putrajaya’s ostentatious bridges, the Putra Bridge, inspired by the 17th-century Khaju Bridge in Iran. 30

KUALA LANGAT INTRODUCTION Brief overview of Kuala Langat Previously Kuala Langat was known as Langat and it was located where Bandar Temasya and Jugra are now situated. Langat was believed to have been founded by the Bugis who came from Johor in the 18th century to trade with Melaka. Jugra was already well known during the golden age of the Melaka Sultanate. Actually it existed well before the Sultanate emerged, as proven by the discovery of archaeological remains believed to be 2,000 years old in Kampung Sungai Lang in 1964. During the reign of Sultan Abdul Samad Ibni Almarhum Raja Abdullah (1857 - 1898), the seat of power was moved to Bandar Temasya during the Klang War (1868). Thereafter, Bandar Temasya became a Royal Town and it played an important role in the political, social and economic development of Selangor. This was mainly due to its location on the coast, which made it suitable for a riverine and marine-based governance system. River navigation was made safe due to its location near the riverbank of Sungai Langat and natural protection provided by the nearby Carey Island. It attracted people from the neighboring areas as well as traders from Sumatera and Bugis. After the death of Sultan Abdul Samad on 6 February 1898, his son Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Shah was installed as the Sultan. The decline of Bandar Temasya and Jugra began early in his reign and finally due to the power struggles within the palace, the seat of power was moved back to Klang in 1903. 44
