100 | SPECIAL FEATURE MELAKA WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Sights & Attractions Malacca’s town centre hosts many Malaysian historic monuments which are recognizable by their architects: the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Portuguese, Dutch and English as they each tell of the different twists and turns of Malaysian history. Here, diversity of culture and religion is celebrated as different cultural and religious centres are located in close proximity to each other. Heritage Area A’ Famosa A walk down the other flight of steps leads to the Porta de Santiago, more famously known as A’ Famosa, the gate being the only remnant of a walled fortress built by the Portuguese Admiral, Alfonso d’ Albuquerque, in 1511. The red-bricked and white washed S-shaped gate was constructed in such a way to avoid gunfire and was restored after the Dutch took over Melaka in 1641. Christ Church A Dutch Reformed Church built in 1753, Christ Church stands testament to Anglo-Dutch influences in the Dutch Square. Originally built as a replacement for St. Paul’s Church the church was converted into an Anglican church by the British and they added the weather vane and a clock tower. It is the oldest Protestant church in Malaysia and the floor and walls bear witness to the Dutch heritage in Malaysia. Thurs to Tues Free Dutch Square Right outside Christ Church is Queen Victoria’s Fountain, built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Installed in 1904, it is the only fountain in Malacca and is the converging point for local trishaw or beca drivers who offer their services to all and sundry. In this square is also the Tang Beng Swee Clock Tower which was built in 1886 in the honour of a local Chinese tycoon and has Dutch-inspired architecture. St. Paul’s Church Right behind the Stadhuys Complex is a flight of stairs leading to the remnants of St. Paul’s Church, which was built by Portuguese captain Duerto Coelho in 1521 and named Nossa Senhora da Annunciada (Our Lady of Annunciation). St. Paul’s was renamed by the Dutch who used it before Christ Church was built and after that it became a Dutch cemetary for notable statesmen, with the marble statue of St. Francis Xavier bearing testament to his interrment here 400 years ago before his remains were buried in Goa, India. The Stadhuys Complex On the right of Christ Church is The Stadhuys, the former Dutch adminstrative building which was completed in 1660. It is the oldest Dutch building remaining in Asia and has been converted into the Historical and Ethnography Museum which archives the life and times of Malacca’s multi-racial citizens. Behind the Stadhuys is the Admiral Cheng Ho Gallery, which features his feats and achievements in fostering diplomatic relations between China and the Asian and African countries. Admiral Cheng Ho was a diplomat sent by the Ming court to conduct trade with countries in the Indian Ocean and Melaka, being an entrepot at that time, was one of his port-of-calls. Other museums within this complex include: The Literature Museum, Govenor’s Museum and the Democratic Rule Museum. All museums within this complex is managed by PERZIM, the statutory body which is in charge of all public museums in the state. +606-6526/+606-281 1289/ +606-282 6645 http://www.perzim.gov.my

SPECIAL FEATURE | 105 MELAKA WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Religious Diversity Of particular note is Jalan Tokong which is also known as Harmony Street because it contains the worship centres Malaysia’s three main religions: the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the Masjid Kapitan Kling and the Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple. While heading northwest along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock would lead to Tengkera, where the famous Masjid Tengkera is located. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple The ‘Temple of Blue Clouds’ was built in 1645 by Kapitan China Lee Wei King and is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia serving the Hokkien Chinese of Malacca then as it does now. The stalls huddled outside the entrance sell prayer items required by devotees. 25 Jalan Tokong +606-282 9343 07:00 to 19:00 daily Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple The oldest surviving Hindu temple still in use, it was built towards the end of the 18th century during Dutch rule and is inspired by the Chetty community of Malacca. It is devoted to the Lord Vinayagar or Ganesha of the Hindu faith and Dutch influence is traceable through the architecture, finishing and roof tiling. Masjid Tengkera The Tengkera Mosque’s unique three-tiered pyramidal roof and a pagoda-shaped stone minaret makes it a top draw even though it is located in the neighbourhood of Tengkera, northwest of the city centre. Believed to have been constructed in 1750, it was the state’s official mosque before and bears strong resemblance to the Demak Mosque in Indonesia and the Kampung Laut Mosque in Kelantan. St Francis Xavier’s Church Built in 1849 by a Frenchman, Reverend Farve, this Gothic-styled church is the largest Catholic Church in Melaka. Dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, the ‘Apostle to the East’, this church bears witness to the missionary’s contributions to the Malaysian congregation. The Straits Mosque (Masjid Selat) This floating mosque is built on a 1.8 hectare land in Pulau Melaka with the craftsmanship of Middle Eastern and local Malay architects. Facing the Melaka Straits, this landmark has spectacular sunset views and showcases modern and functional Islamic craftsmanship. Pulau Melaka
