38 | SIGHTS & ATTRACTIONS ONE DAY IN KL One Day in KL What do you do when you have only one day to spend in KL? Plenty actually, with KL – The Guide showing you just how to. 7.00 am: Wake up!! Time for breakfast at one of the many stalls on Petaling Street if you like some regular Chinese fare, or if you are wondering what ‘pulled tea’ or teh tarik tastes like, head off to the nearest mamak shop near Masjid India for a cuppa. Watch people as they rush off to do their marketing or prepare for work. 8.00 am: When you’re done with breakfast… Hail a taxi and head to the Lake Gardens for a walk. The butterfly, bird and deer park is for animal lovers while plant lovers can check out the orchid and hibiscus gardens. When it gets hotter, usually about 9.30 am, it’s time to head off to the next destination. 9.30 am: KLCC here we come! The first thing you absolutely have to do is line up for free tickets to visit the Sky Bridge as it gives you a bird’s eye view of KL. You may take a cab, but KLCC is accesible by LRT. After getting the tickets, check out the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, the home of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. You may also like to check out Petrosains and Aquaria, both located in the vicinity. 12.30 pm: Lunch anyone? A whole constellation of eateries, restaurants, cafes and delis are just waiting for you on Jalan Bukit Bintang or Bintang Walk running the whole gamut of world cuisines. When you are done lunching, the best shopping in the region is right here with the latest high-end fashion and accessories, IT gadgets, lifestyle and interior décor to choose from. The air-conditioned malls along this road also provide respite from the sweltering sun. 3.30 pm: A taste of old town When you have done all you can not to break the bank on shopping, it’s time to soak in some of the sights of KL and satisfy the shutterbug within as well. From the Jamek Mosque, walk down the road to the old highcourt building. Turn the corner and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is on your left with Padang Merdeka right opposite. At the end of the Padang is the nation’s tallest flagpole and in that corner is the Kuala Lumpur Gallery and Library. Walk down the other flank and you will pass by the Royal Selangor Club and at the end is the Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin. Right opposite the road is the Town Hall. When you have walked till this end of the Padang, it’s time to head back. 6.30 pm: Arts and Crafts You may either walk or take the LRT to Central Market, the centre for arts and crafts in KL. Spend some time choosing souvenirs to bring back home and indulge in the richness of Malaysian culture all around you. 7.30 pm: Chinatown Just in time for dinner, this is the best time to visit Petaling Street as the night has just begun. The selection of Chinese food is simply delicious. For a truly Malaysian experience, try haggling and bargaining for the best buys in the night market or bazaar for accassories, watches, wallets and bags. 9.00 pm: Paint KL red Not called ‘The Garden City of Lights’ for nothing, KL’s vibrant nightlife is found along Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan P. Ramlee or the Asian Heritage Row on Jalan Doraisamy. The best way to get there would be to take a taxi and to walk down the road till you get to a bar, club or pub that suits your fancy. After that, you are set to paint the town red! 12.00 am: Supper time Though it’s past bed time and yes, it’s more than a day now, Malaysians just love hanging out with their friends in road side mamak stalls and with the many 24-hour outlets available, they, and you, are spoilt for choice.

FOOD | 75 LOCAL TRADITIONAL CUISINE Chinese Right in the City Centre Long considered by many as the city centre of KL before KLCC was developed, the Bukit Bintang and Chinatown area was extremely famous for its local Chinese dishes. Among the more famous include beef noodles and fried Hokkien noodles. Meanwhile, just across the road from Chinatown is Masjid India, whose influence can also be partly seen on the restaurants on Jalan TAR as they are just back-to-back. The specialty here is definitely the Indian Muslim dish of Nasi Kandar and this can also be seen in the next page. Beef Noodles Without a doubt on of the mainstays of Klang Valley’s street food, beef noodles is a dish that is based on a clear beef broth with a mixture of sliced beef, tendons, tripe and beef balls. The noodles are served either wet (the noodles are in the soup) or dry (also known as kon loh, where the noodles are separate from the soup). 76 | FOOD LOCAL TRADITIONAL CUISINE Indian Wars and invasions – definitely a characteristic found in the food scene of these densely populated suburbs. Petaling Jaya witnessed its own was when the banana leaf rice battle waged on in 2005 between 2 similarly named banana leaf ice restaurants, meanwhile Subang Jaya is the site of steamboat barbecue invasions in the newly opened Desa Mentari area. In Damansara and TTDI, the battles have not been as fierce but it doesn’t mean that the food is bland. Here we explore some of the gems within these neigbourhoods, starting with PJ. Banana Leaf Rice This dish is the preserve of Southern Indian Chettinand cuisine as warmly cooked rice is spooned out in generous quantities onto cleaned banana leaves, filling the air with the distinctive aroma from the banana leaf. Then helpings of various types of curries and vegetables are ladled by the side. If you are a regular meat-eater then you may order your preferred meat dish from their jewel case otherwise, this would be a vegetarian dish. After all the side dishes have been added on, a special selection of condiments can be chosen to accompany the dish, they would include fried condiments like deep fried vegetables, homemade potato chips and papadams; rasam (a spiced vegetable soup which aids digestion); thairu (sour yoghurt) and pickled dishes like pickled chillies and mango chutney. Sri Paandi’s vs. Sri Paandi’s The battle of the banana leaf rice commenced in 2005, when a new outlet of Sri Paandi’s in Brickfields was opened next to a restaurant with the same name. As a result, a battle ensued that saw each trying to outdo the other, with the residents of PJ’s Section 11 all talking about it. It was finally resolved when one of the restaurants inserted the words PJ into the name. The customers were impressed with the taste, price and service of either one of the other and usually would have their own preferences if they were regulars of either one of the Sri Paandi’s Restaurants. It is really a must to taste both and make your own pick when dining in PJ! 84 | FOOD BAKERY-CAFES Concept Dining: Bakery-Cafés Concept dining is the place to explore different concepts available in the food scene right now. This time around we discover the many places that you can explore particularly if you have a sweet tooth or a craving for baked Western-style desserts. While this trend is not new, it highlights how classic bakeries and cake houses re-invent themselves by expanding their repertoire to include food items and becoming famous cafés in their own right. La Manila From their stronghold in Taman Megah, La Manila’s cakes are famed for their moist softness and freshness. The Taman Megah café has delectable Asian food as well, with their Char Kuey Teow well worth the mention, and is a favourite among the office crowds for their weekday lunches. However, their cakes and desserts are available all throughout the day. In fact all 4 outlets within the Klang Valley offer pastries and pasta besides cakes and Malaysian delicacies. Begun by Dato Steven Sim in 1997, it popularised the concept of a bakery-café as lifestyle dining option. This concept literally hit the ground running as there were no other local chain tapping this niche yet and the rest, as they say, is history. Besides Hence, Secret Recipe’s success in spreading to 55 outlets and counting in the KL alone and 111 outlets and counting throughout the Klang Valley. Recently, Secret Recipe has gone abroad, carrying with it the secret of not just a great dining recipe, but also a Malaysian franchise with a viable potential for growth. www.secretrecipe.com.my DELIcious Need we say more? RECREATION & ACTIVITIES | 93 MOTORSPORT The Sepang F1 GP and Circuit Mention those words and instantly the heat is on as the mother of all motor sports events, the prestigious F1 Grand Prix, returns to Malaysian shores every April. Tickets to the 32 000- capacity, double-frontage Grand Stand are almost always sold out weeks before and those who miss them either head for the additional 60 000 covered seating or take to camping out on the track which can accommodate up to 130 000 spectators at any one time. The natural stadium that is the landmark Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is strategically located next to KLIA and LCCT, and is the ‘Home of Motorsports’ of the nation, hosting many motor sports events since opening its doors in March 1999 during the inaugural Sepang F1 Grand Prix. The winner of the “Organiser of the Best Grand Prix for 1999” Award by the FIA is the only international circuit awarded the privilege of incorporating the F1 logo in its official name. Besides that, it also sets a benchmark for all future circuits to be constructed with its’ impressive list of firsts which include having the first electronic marshall posts, double frontage grandstands (allowing 2 races to be run simultaneously), canopy tower and mall within the grandstand for added spectator recreation.
94 | RECREATION & ACTIVITIES MOTORSPORT The 5.543-km Main track which features 15 turns and 8 straights includes two high-speed stretches is home to both the F1GP and the MotoGP and can be split into two circuits, the 2.8- km North track and the 2.6-km South track at both sides of the track to allow two races to go on simultaneously. These shorter circuits play host to various GPs such as the A1GP, the Malaysian Super Series and even the Drag Battle. This circuit truly enables motor sports buffs to enjoy both the thrilling high-speed races as well as the gruelling endurance battles. Meanwhile, the Motorcross Circuit, which is part of the series of 5 circuits found in Sepang, hosts the MotoX GP annually. Melaka is a state situated on the west coast of Malaysia, about 1 hour 45 minutes drive south of Kuala Lumpur. The famous birthplace of the Melakan Sultanate, which is the basis to the Malay sultanates in Malaysia, was honoured as one of the World Heritage Sites in July 2008. Founded by a Sumatran prince, Parameswara, between 1390–1400 AD, Melaka became a thriving entrepot for traders from all across Asia, including the Middle East, India and China. It was during this time that hybrid cultures such as the Peranakans (or Babas and Nyonyas) and Chitties were birthed out of the intermarriage between the Chinese and Indians with the locals respectively. Over time, Melaka fell under the dominance of the Portuguese, Dutch and English in 1511, 1641 and 1824 respectively and the Eurasians (or Serani) community came forth as a result. The main thoroughfares of Bandar Hilir, Melaka’s city centre is a feast for the senses as architecture from communities past and present stand next to each other and roadside hawkers call out to visitors to try the wide array of authentic Peranakan dishes available. One is simply spoilt for choice when it comes to buying antiques, traditional wear and other bric-a-bracs from pedestrian walkways and some of the trendier malls in Melaka. In the midst of all these are lodgings to suit every taste, from quaint boutique hotels to luxurious five-star hotels. There are even theme parks and a whole range of farms and parks to suit a family vacation in nearby Ayer Keroh and an exciting new way to see the ever-changing Melaka Riverfront brings out its charm to all ages. Tucked within this Special Feature of KL – The Guide is a magic carpet ride through Melaka city’s highlights. This section will give you an overview of all there is to see, feel, taste and do while in Melaka and help you plan a trip back in time to the Historic City of Melaka.
