Foreword From MINISTER OF TOURISM MALAYSIA Y.B DATO’ SRI DR. NG YEN YEN On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Kuala Lumpur, the colourful and thriving capital of Malaysia.Kuala Lumpur was built around the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers where most of the tin mining related trading and deals was done in the early years. Such activity had since cease with the depletion of tin resources. However Kuala Lumpur continues to chart impressive growth with the development of other economic activities and many other world class events as well as facilities. Notwithstanding the modern development of Kuala Lumpur, the Government had taken many efforts in preserving many heritage buildings which stand testimony to the capital’s glorious past. A stroll along the streets of Kuala Lumpur will afford you views of many heritage buildings which have become landmarks in Kuala Lumpur. However, the true experince of Kuala Lumpur, and Malaysia by extension, is in its people. The living heritage of many Asian cultures, races and traditions blend harmoniously to create a uniquely Malaysian identity known for its warmth hospitality and friendliness As such I invite you to experience for yourself our hospitality through the variety of foods, culture and interesting places all over Kuala Lumpur. I trust you will be enticed with the diversity we have here.Last but not least, let me also congratulate Bluedale Publishing (M) Sdn. Bhd. for putting in place this informative guide book. I laud such efforts as it complements the Ministry of Tourisn’s effort in promoting Malaysia as a truly Asia destination. “MALAYSIA TRULY ASIA”
8 || ABOUt KLAng VALLeY Klang Valley – An Introduction lang Valley, or Lembah Klang in Malay, is named after Klang River, which is associated to the early development of the area as a cluster of tin mining towns in the late 19th century. Situated in Kthe centre of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Klang Valley comprises the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and its adjoining districts in Selangor, namely Gombak, Hulu Langat, Petaling and Klang, covering an area of 2826 square kilometers. Geographically, it is delineated by Titiwangsa Mountain Range to the north and east, and the Strait of Malacca to the west. Being the most vibrant and lively region in the country, Klang Valley is the heartland of Malaysia’s industry and commerce and is always buzzing with vitality. Home to a great number of migrants from other states within Malaysia and foreign workers from Indonesia, Myanmar, India and Nepal, it is considered as the fastest growing region in the Gombak country with many more rapidly growing new towns and yet Federal Territory more is believed to develop in the near future. Klang Development of the region took place mainly in the East-West direction (between Gombak and Port Klang) but the urban Petaling areas surrounding Kuala Lumpur have since grown south Hulu Langat towards the border with Negeri Sembilan and north towards Putrajaya Rawang. Kuala Langat Sepang Now, with the emergence of Klang Valley 2 Region, covering two areas in the south of Selangor—the districts of Sepang and Kuala Langat, this new region will become somewhat important and have a more active role to play. It will generate economic development, strengthen the intra and inter-regional economic network and distribute its benefits to the surrounding areas. These districts have been directly affected by the implementation of mega projects, such as Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) and the Federal Administration Centre in Putrajaya, hence becoming the new areas for the expansion of the present Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan Region, Klang Valley. Sepang District, which is named after a tree commonly found in the district, the Sepang tree, is the youngest district for the state of Selangor and it is located at the south of Selangor. Shaped like the stem of a ‘keris’ as seen from the air, it borders the districts of Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Petaling, as well as Bandar Baru Nilai in Negeri Sembilan. Originally, this district comprises smaller districts of Kuala Langat and Hulu Langat which were later consolidated to form a new district. Later, on 1st January, 1975, Sepang achieved full district status. Known as the Airport City after the Federal Government chose Sepang to build the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi became the Sepang District Administration Centre on 26th August, 1983. The road network in Sepang comprises the Elite Highway on the west, the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Highway on the east, and the B20 Highway in between, as well as the Express Rail Link and new roads such as the South Klang Valley Expressway, Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya-Cyberjaya Highway, Putrajaya Urban Motorway and the new B15 Highway. The district of Kuala Langat has become a strategic investment area following the intense development of Putrajaya and KLIA, and good road network linking it to Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang, Port Klang, Putrajaya and KLIA. It is said that Kuala Langat was named after Sungai Langat (Langat River), of which the word ‘Langat’ is claimed to be originated from the Minangkabau word bearing the meaning ‘hot water’. It is said that traders of the past, who used the Langat River for trading purpose, found the water at the Langat River estuary was always hot, hence the use of the name ‘Kuala Langat’. Kuala Langat is located in the south-western part of Selangor and bordered by the districts of Klang to the north and Sepang to the east. Part of Selangor’s border with the state of Negeri Sembilan forms its southern border whereas the Strait of Malacca forms its western border.

This longest crystal quartz outcrop in the world is noticeable en route from Zoo Negara to Karak Highway using the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2). Many may be mistaken by the many greyish outcrops that look like limestone rocks, which in fact is quartz. Surprisingly, being a priceless geological wonder, this magnificent quartz ridge is relatively unrecognised despite being located in the immediate vicinity of Kuala Lumpur. The foot of the ridge can be accessed through Taman Melawati at the entrance of the Klang Gates Dam. A natural heritage and unique God’s creation to the country and the world, there are many reasons why geologists and biologists marvel at it. No other quartz outcrops in the country and perhaps even the world can match its massive length and breadth. This botanical treasure nurtures some 265 plant species, including small coniferous-like trees, shrubs, creepers, orchids and moss, with five of them endemic to the area. Besides plants, the ridge is also home to various types of

It is said that the name ‘Broga’ is derived from Buragas, a legendary beast that lives in the jungle. Broga Hill is lush green hills that surround the town of Broga and is part of the Titiwangsa Range, hence making it a famous hiking place for novice hikers and scenic spot for photography. With the height of about 300 m, the hill is so unique that one quarter of its top is covered with only green tall weeds known as ‘lalang’ (in Malay). On top of Broga Hill, you can see massive beautiful grassland with backdrops of mountains a la The Sound of Music scenery. Broga Hill is located 50 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur and cars are the best means of transport to get there. It is situated between the University of Nottingham and Broga town centre. The main entrance is at the palm oil estate. You can park your vehicles opposite the rabbit farm as long as you do not block the way.
12 || SightSeeing tOURS SightSeeing tOURS || 13 Nature: Hills – Broga Hill Nature: Hills – Broga Hill/Bukit Putih Compared to Bukit Tabur (Klang Gates Quartz Ridge), climbing Broga Hill is much easier and not as dangerous as Bukit Tabur. The only obstacles are passing through a few landslides and crossing a small wooden bridge. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the first peak. There are about three peaks, each offering slightly different views. To reach the highest peak from the first peak, it will take about one hour. Although the whole journey does not take a long time, you may be surprised by the breaktaking views, which give you the feel of being at a quite high area above sea level. On the highest peak, you can see clearly the University of Nottingham Malaysia main campus, surrounded by palm oil trees, Broga town area, Taman Pelangi Semenyih, Bandar Rinching and Semenyih town. Courtesy of Jay Mobilik Bukit Putih Despite being located in the immediate vicinity of urban areas, Bukit Putih or ‘Ah Pak San’ (in Chinese) has a surprising number of wildlife living there, including birds, squirrels and monkeys. The trails that wind around offer some moderately challenging ascents and descents at some parts. It would simply take up most of the day to traverse all the trails, passing through different ‘stations’ or checkpoints around the hill. The outer edges of the hill are mostly made up of rubber trees but further in, old secondary or primary forest. One of the trails will lead you to a small but scenic waterfall located down below following a steep descent. Along the way, you can spot banded leaf langurs (Presbytis femoralis) perching among treetops. This less common species of primate lives in primary rainforests and can tolerate logged forests and plantations. Locals that live nearby Bukit Putih usually jog around the hill, have picnics and go for a swim at the waterfall on the weekends. They have even, on their own initiative, formed an organisation to preserve and maintain the trails and jungle. Credit should be given for their initiative and effort. As such, hikers from outside have no problem finding their ways while hiking in Bukit Putih as the trails are well-marked with labels and bands to show the correct directions.
