It’s the perfect havenfor new climbers aspiring to their rst experience of climbing natural rock. Situatedapproximately 13 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur. How to get thereFrom Kuala Lumpur drive to Jalan Kuching for approximately 10 KM until you seesignage’s for Batu Caves. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES114 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary They are intelligent, individualistic, highly disciplined and they adhere to the social rules and customs within the group. The adults are ercely protective of their young and if threatened, they form a circle round their young to protect them from any impending danger, sacri cing themselves if needed. In reality, the leader of a herd of elephant is not a male but rather a dominant female known as the ‘Matriach’. The Matriach is normally the largest female in the herd and she leads her family group between 15 to 30 individuals’ elephants. This is the place you will experience the elephant’s unconditional love for one another and social dedi- cation to each member of the group is truly admi- rable; basic building blocks for healthy communal living for many to emulate. How to get there About an hour drive from Kuala Lumpur if you can take the Karak Highway from Hutan Lipur Lentang.

115 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES116 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Gua Batu Maloi Gua Batu Maloi in Johol district, Negeri Sembilan, will never be accorded as “cave” status for two reasons.“First, it’s a granite cave and secondly, since it’s not a limestone cave, there are no stalac- tites and stalagmites,”Cave is generally a natural underground void that a man can enter, expert insists that Gua Batu Maloi is, in actual fact, a cave. The cave is literally unknown. Not much is written on the Internet about this cave and only a handful of websites have short entries. There are 24 checkpoints along the 1km cave, marked by adventurous villagers. The trail from the base camp didn’t take too long before you stepped into the water and waded through the shallow water. After several stream crossings in less than ve minutes, the walk stopped at a little pond that has two big boulders making up more than half of its perimeter. Don’t worry you just need to follow as directed by the guide. The further you trek, the les open it became. Slowly the trail will led you into the cavity that only had shafts of sun rays to shine some light while the water show its fury. You are forced to used every bit of you energy through the gaps. You will reach a climb point where you had to climb against the water falls. It was not a tall climb but you need to push yourself up through the strong water current force. There was climbing too. When we had to climb against the water falls, we did so with the help of ropes. But one particular rope climb was so tough that only a handful of us managed to do it. It was not that tall a climb — just a step up on the rock — but the water would be too strong for you to use your hands to pull up. At this checkpoint when you nally see sun again would be checkpoint 12. You will realize how tough and risky Gua Batu Maloi was. If it rains heavily, the water level inside the cave can rise rapidly.“That’s why no one is allowed to go in without an experienced guide. How to get there Though located in Gunung Tampin Forest Reserve, Gua Batu Maloi is only accessible from Kampung Tanggai in Johol district, about 40 minutes’ drive from Tampin. Where to stay If you wish to take a longer caving exploration, it is best to stay overnight at Gua Batu Maloi base camp.
