CARDIOLOGY 99 MEDICAL TOURISMTCardiology is a medical specialty dealing with disorders of the heart. The eld includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology. Doctors who specialize in this eld of medicine are calledcardiologists. Doctors who specialize in cardiac surgery are called cardiac surgeons. Simply getting old is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (heart disease); risk of stroke doubles every decade after age 55. Your family’s history of cardiovascular disease indicates your risk. If a rst-degree blood relative has had coronary heart disease or stroke before the age of 55 years (for a male relative) or 65 years (for a female relative) your risk increases. As a man you are at greater risk of heart disease than a pre- menopausal woman. But once past the menopause, a woman’s risk is similar to a man’s. Risk of stroke is similar for men and women. Ethnic origin also plays a role in cardiovascular disease. People with African or Asian ancestry face higher risks of developing cardiovascular disease than other racial groups. Although some of these risk factors, such as age, gender or family history are irreversible; many important cardiovascular risk factors are modi able by lifestyle change, social change and drug treatment. One of Malaysia’s major attractions as a medical travel destination is its growing reputation as a centre of excellence in cardiology. We already have eight hospitals that specialise in cardiac care and treatment, while the Ministry of Health is establishing cardiology units at 5 other hospitals.

Beyond KLS arawak is one of two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo. This largest Malaysian state is also known as the “Land of the Hornbills”. It is situated on the northwest of Borneo, bordering the Malaysian stateof Sabah to the northeast, Indonesia to the south, and surrounding Brunei.Sarawak is blessed with vast areas of both lowland and highland rainforest, which covers approximately 8.7 million hectares. Currently, there are about 15totally protected areas that is opened to the public (which includes nationalparks, nature reserves and wildlife centers). Among the more popular parksare Bako National Park, Mulu National Park and Niah National Park.A large proportion of Sarawak’s animals are unique to Borneo and do notoccur in mainland South-east Asia. These include approximately 19% of themammals, 6% of the birds, 20% of the snakes and 32% of the lizards; andthese species are largely found in Totally Protected Areas. The vascular floraof Sarawak comprises more than 8,000 species. Over 2,000 tree species havebeen enumerated whereas orchid would number more than 1000 species, ferns account for 757 species and palm make up another 260 species.Sarawak can be divided into three natural regions. The coastal region israther low lying flat country with large extents of swamps and other wetenvironments. The hill region provides most of the easily inhabited land andmost of the larger cities and towns have been built in this region. The portsof Kuching and Sibu have been built some distance from the coast on rivers.Bintulu and Miri are close to the coastline where the hills stretch right to theSouth China Sea. The third region is the mountain region along the borderand with the Kelabit (Bario), Murut (Ba Kelalan) and Kenyah (Usun Apau)highlands in the north.

SARAWAK 109Kubah National Park BEYOND KLSituated on a smallsandstone plateau, thissmall park (2,230 ha.) 22kilometres away fromKuching is one of themost accessible nationalparks in Sarawak. Thethree mountain peaks inthe park – the 911m highGunung Serapi and theslightly smaller GunungSelang and GunungSendok – is clearlyvisible from the KuchingWaterfront.Kubah was established in 1989 because of its exceptionally rich plant life, andonly opened to the public in 1995. The Park covers an area of 2,230 hectares. At heights of between 150-450 metres, Kubah’s soft sandstone is punctuatedwith bands of hardened limestone which have created a number of beautifulwaterfalls and bathing pools.Kubah is mostly covered by mixed dipterocarp forest, but it also has oneof the widest selections of palms and orchids in Borneo. Almost a hundreddifferent palm species can be found in an area of just over 22 sq km, makingKubah probably the richest palm habitat for its size anywhere in the world. But Kubah’s palms are not only abundant – they are also historically andecologically important. Many of Kubah’s palms were first described by thegreat Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari (1843-1920), who spent 3 years inSarawak from 1865 to 1868.There are a number of treks and forest walks inside the park, ranging from thegentle to the downright arduous. The Waterfall Trail is the most popular trail, passing through mixed dipterocarp forest and incorporates a number of plankwalk sections that cross streams and swampy land. +6082-845033 National Parks Booking O ce Visitors Information Centre. +6082-248088 Online booking: ebooking.com.myHow to get there:Matang Transport Company bus No. 11 departs from outside the Saujana CarPark in Kuching (check with the Visitor Information Centre in Kuching for thelatest bus timetable). Taxis can also be chartered for the 40 minute trip tothe park. Alternatively, a number of travel operators in Kuching run guidedtours to the park.

BEYOND KL110 SARAWAK Matang Wildlife Centre Matang Wildlife Centre is part of Kubah National Park is situated at the western corner of the Kubah National Park. It is only a 40-minute of drive away from Kuching. Matang is Sarawak’s main centre for animal rehabilitation and therefore is home to a wide variety of animals. Some of the species that are being rehabilitated here include orangutan, sun bears, bear cats, civet cats, sambar deer, barking deer, porcupines and crocodiles as well as a large variety of birds such as hornbills, brahminy kites and sea eagles. All of these animals can be viewed in spacious natural enclosures and large aviary houses. The main attraction is the orangutan adoption programme, where young orangutans, either orphaned or rescued from captivity are taught how to survive in the wild. On the other hand, there are some pleasant riverside picnic spots a short walk from the information centre and four jungle trails. Matang Wildlife Centre +6082-246575 National Parks Booking O ce Visitors Information Centre. +6082-248088 Online booking: ebooking.com.my How to get there: There is no direct bus service to the park. However, you can take Matang Transport Co. bus No. 21 (which passes Kubah Park HQ but it does not go all the way to Matang Wildlife Centre). Ask to be dropped off at the turning for the Polytechnic. Then try to catch local mini-buses (bas sewa) but the service is very irregular. If you do see a small white bas sewa, flag it down and ask the driver to drop you off at the Centre. Park rangers can arrange a transport for your way back; however you need to arrange this beforehand.

SARAWAK 111 BEYOND KLMount SantubongSet under the spectacularly steep 810m peak of Mount Santubong, theSantubong Peninsula is home to Sarawak’s finest beach resorts and its famousCultural Village and only 35 minutes’ drive from Kuching. The main trekking trail up takes between 3 and 4 hours to reach the summitand slightly less to descend again. Climbers need to take plenty to drink andsome food. Begin your descent by 3pm to get back in the day light and avoidstepping on snakes that cross the path sometimes. A lucky climber may berewarded with the chance of a rare Hornbill with a cream/yellow beak. The reward from the peak is impressive: a 360 degrees unobstructed view overthe ocean, a number of smaller islands, the Santubong River and the sisterBukit Keruing on the Baku National Park peninsula on the East. There is also a smaller loop trail which only goes to a waterfall at the bottom ofthe mountain. This trail should not take longer than 3 hours total at a relaxedpace. The entrance of this shorter trail is on the main Damai road exit at about1km past the junction to the Santubong village. Damai Beach Resort +6082-846 999 Damai Puri Resort & Spa +6082-846 900 Permai Rainforest Resort +6082-846 487/490How to get there:Minivans head to Santubong regularly from the market in Kuching, leavingwhen full. You can also have the hotel/ resort you are staying on the peninsulasend one to Kuching for you by arrangement. Regular tour buses leave frommost of the major hotels in Kuching too.

BEYOND KL112 SARAWAK Fairy Cave and Wind Cave Fairy Cave and Wind Cave are about 50 minutes’ drives from Kuching City. The Fairy Cave is about 3-storey high. After a quick climb through the cave with torchlight, the cave opens up into a main chamber. Sunlight streams into the chamber, enabling you to view the limestone formation of several types. View the beautiful and some eerie shape of nature creations, the stalactites and stalagmites. There is a formation that has been likened to the Goddess of Mercy which at about 3 meters in height resembles a woman dressed in classical Chinese robes, complete with hat, look down benignly upon worshippers. Another formation looks like an old man crouching down. Then proceed to the Wind Cave which is only about 10 min drive away. Walking along the platform, you will find that this dark-tunnel like cave is filled with bats and swiftlets. Look around the wall of the cave with torchlight and you might be lucky to spot the bird nest with some eggs in it. After enjoying the cave you can walk to the end of the road and take a refreshing bath with the locals in the clean Bau River. How to get there: It is best to book a day tour provided by travel agents in Kuching.

BEYOND KL114 SARAWAK Mulu National Park Mulu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses caves and karst formations in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting. The national park is named after Mount Mulu (2376 metres), the second highest mountain in Sarawak. Important both for its high biodiversity and for its karst features, Mulu National Park is the most studied tropical karst area in the world. Over millennia the flow of water draining from the slopes of Mount Mulu towards the sea has cut deep gorges through the Park’s limestone mountains and, within the rock itself, a complex network of vast caves has been formed. It also has the largest known natural chamber in the world – Sarawak Chamber, found in Nasib Bagus Cave. It is 700 metres long, 396 metres wide and at least 70 metres high. It has been said that the chamber is so big that it could accommodate about 40 Boeing 747s, without overlapping their wings. Mulu’s lime stones belong to the Melinau Formation and their age is between 17 and 40 million years. Stratigraphically below the limestones, lies the Mulu Formation (shale and sandstones). The age of these rocks is between 40 and 90 million years. might be lucky to spot the bird nest with some eggs in it. After enjoying the cave you can walk to the end of the road and take a refreshing bath with the locals in the clean Bau River. How to get there: Mulu National Park is a very remote access area; the only practical way of getting to and out from it is by air, through Mulu Airport.

SARAWAK 115 BEYOND KLSarawak Orchid ParkThis beautiful park is situated opposite the Kuching Waterfront just across theSantubong River. It has a collection of 75,000 orchids from 65 epiphytic andterrestrial species and hybrid, growing in open and shaded areas resemblingtheir natural habitats. The garden features the world-renowned Borneo Orchids, known for its beautyand potentials as horticultural plants. Among the famous Borneo Orchidsfound in the garden are the ladys’ slipper, a unique green and black-floweredorchid; the Vanda dearie and the “Normah Orchid” which was declared thestate flower of Sarawak on 28 August 1983.The Normah Orchid-light green in colour and flushed with bright purpletowards the base has been use to produce many colourful star-shaped noveltyhybrids.
