BEMYeOnjNeDlaKLhAaNnGTeVAmLLpEatY :MMeEnLaArKiAk SUPPLEMENT : MELAKA MELAKA DSupplement : Melaka eveloping and yet distinctly traditional, it is no surprise that Melaka is a place where people from all over Malaysia want to go. But one thing honorary Melaka people agree on is that what makes the place special to them is the people, whether local or expat, the people of Melaka bring something extra that makes this place feel like their great place to visit. Today, it is home to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Melaka. This capital city invites you to experience the old world charm of buildings and architecture inherited from centuries of Portugese, Dutch and British rule and to witness the various customs and cultures of its people. 106

HISTORICAL SUPPLEMENT : MELAKA BEYOND KLANG VALLEY : MELAKAMelaka Tengah Stadhuys Complex The legacy of the Dutch is still very much alive and felt in Melaka in a form of a red building called the Stadthuys.t was the o cial residence of the Dutch Governor, built in 1650. It nowadays houses the Historical Museum and Ethnographical Museum. It was in 1982 when the Stadthuys was converted into a history museum which exhibits Melaka’s history starting from the great Malay Sultanate and the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonization till the present day. It is believed that the Stadthuys is the oldest Dutch building in the East. Today it houses pictures that portray events leading to the attainment of Malaysia’s Independence and historical documents, maps, treatises, video tapes, lms, minutes of meetings, news scripts and other that relates to the independence struggle. Apart from the exhibition items, visitors can also witness the uniqueness of the memorial building which combined the elements of both locals and British architecture.

BEMYeOnjNeDlaKLhAaNnGTeVAmLLpEatY :MMeEnLaArKiAk SUPPLEMENT : MELAKA HISTORICAL Melaka Tengah Porta de Santiago Porta de Santiago, which means The Famous, is a Portuguese fortress located in Melaka. This is the best evidence of Portuguese occupation hundreds of years ago. Located at the foot of St. Paul’s Hill, was built in 1512 under the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque. Its signi cance started to fade when the British settled here in the early 19th century. The British had almost destroyed the whole complex when Sir Stamford Ra es arrived in 1808. He was able to stop the destruction, but unfortunately what is left until today is nothing more than a gateway called Porta de Santiago. Jalan Parameswara, Melaka 06-231 4343 Bukit Cina Bukit Cina is situated southeast of Melaka Town, about 148 metres above sea level and covers an area of 42 hectares. There are more than 12,500 graves on Bukit China including approximately 20 Muslim tombs. Bukit China is also believed to be the oldest and largest traditional Chinese cemetery outside China. The weather had taken a heavy toll on the tomb, and in 1933 Cheng Hoon Teng Temple had undertaken to repair it. A stone inscription was108 Jalan Puteri Hang Li Poh, Bukit Cina, erected to mark it. The tomb Melaka was again restored in 2001.

The rst British person tobe buried at the Dutch Graveyardwas Captain John Kidd, a captain ofa ship while the last British personto be buried was the wife of a Britisharmy o cer in 1838. The grave thatattracts the attention of most visitorsis the one that has a tall columnwhere two army o cers were killedduring the Naning War (1831-1832).Naning War is a war waged against theBritish by the ninth ruler of the Naningdistrict, Dol Said. Dutch Graveyard hasbeen gazetted as a National Monumentunder the Antiquities Act 1976. Victoria Fountain The Queen Victoria Fountain was built in 1901 by the British to commemorate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. It is probably one of the last traces of the British colonial era in Malaysia which symbolizes the glorious days of the British colonization in Malaysia in the yesteryears. Made of English marble, the Queen Victoria’s Fountain is still functioning well today, and is considered as one of the most frequently photographed landmarks in Melaka. 9 ESSENTIAL TRAVEL TIPS ESSENTIAL INFORMATION7Having a few aims or wanting to explore thecity would not be a wise idea as time is aconstraint. If the idea of the trip is to relax, then,go for a spa, reserve a table by the beach siderestaurant or have a drink in a laidback bar. Ifthe idea of the trip is to try the food there, then, get a local map and mark the destinations tobe covered. Make sure to not overeat as it willmake you feel lethargic and not leave enoughroom for more. The idea is to eat a little butmany times throughout the day. 8If the point of the trip is to experience the place and culture, for example a kampungarea, then the best way to do so within the given time frame is to plan the trip on alocal map. Having a GPS would be really helpful. Ensure that you have all addressesbefore hand to avoid driving around lost. Do take lots of photographs and behavelike tourists because after all, you are on a holiday.9Last but de nitely not least is the budget allocated. Set aside the relevant amountplus a little extra for the planned and expected expenditures such as accomodation, car rental, ights and so on. As for the unplanned expenditures, do remember totake into account the meals, souvenirs and other activities. If possible try to usea mix of cash and credit. The reason is with cash, you can visibly monitor howmuch is spent. However withcredit, you may over splurgeand this might worry youwhen you get home. Onthe other hand, travellingwith too much cash can bea bit risky as you becomea potential victim of theftor just the traditional caseof misplacing your wallet. Then, in this case, a creditcard seems to be the slightlywiser choice.Well, these pointers serve as a rough guide to planning a weekend trip out; doremember there will always be a next time travelling back to the same place. Timemay be a constraint so if it is going to be your rst time there, worry not because thereare 52 weekends in a year, chances are you can travel there again. 135
