KL ANG V ALLEY AT A GL ANCE The Klang Valley is one of Malaysia’s most developed areas. The Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Gombak, Petaling, Klang, and Hulu Langat are the five areas that make up this region. The Klang Valley is located roughly in the middle of Peninsular Malaysia’s West Coast and covers an area of approximately 2,832 square kilometres. In 2018, the population of the Klang Valley reached roughly 8 million people. The two federal territories in the west mentioned before are enclaves within Selangor. Selangor is Malaysia’s most visited state among domestic tourists, in addition to the many areas of interest it has to offer. Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has been the Sultan of Selangor since 2001. The state, which is located on the west coast of the Malaysian peninsula, is home to the country’s two main transportation hubs: Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Port Klang, the largest port in the country. History Of Klang Valley Heritage & History Mining for tin and ore has long been a part of Selangor’s history. And Selangor has a lengthy history, with Klang existing even before Parameswara discovered Malacca. The Bugis Brothers set out to depose the then-ruling Sultan, Raja Kechil, in 1722, and one of the brothers, Raja Sulaiman, was crowned the monarch of Johor Riau. Raja Lumu, a descendant, founded Kuala Lumpur Selangor in 1766 and became the first Sultan of Selangor. He is also notable for constructing Kota Melawati, a fort strategically located on a hill in Kuala Selangor. The fort was used to defend Selangor. The fort was taken by the Dutch in 1784 and renamed Fort Altingsburg, but it was shortly regained by Sultan Ibrahim on June 28, 1785. The early development of what is now known as the ‘Klang Valley’ took place along the Klang River. In reality, it was the late 19th century growth of tin mine villages that would eventually become the ‘Klang Valley,’ which were sprinkled along the river. Because of its closeness to development, the Klang River is thought to have given the valley its name. From the 19th century onwards, the area grew rapidly, with urban areas extending to the north (Rawang) and south (Port Klang) in east (Gombak) and west (Port Klang) directions (Negeri Sembilan). Selangor is Malaysia’s most populated state and home to the Klang Valley, the country’s largest conurbation. Selangor’s first capital Kuala Selangor, was founded in 1766 and was eventually superseded by Kuala Lumpur. Shah Alam took over the region as the first planned city in 1978, four years after Kuala Lumpur was constituted into a Federal Territory. Selangor is the place to visit as it encompasses a range of attractions to fulfill the desires of its visitors. With its rich cultural heritage, naturally beautiful landscapes and surrounding, outdoor activities as well as a wide selection of shopping centres to invade, tourists will be spoilt for choice. Amidst the hustle and bustle of development, Selangor still remains with its natural beauty which still attracts people around the world. There are so many things to do in Selangor that you’ll need to spend more time discovering the state’s various beauties. Prepare yourself, Selangor, and be prepared to be blown away by the surprises that await you. KL ANG V ALLEY AT A GL ANCE 12
