Etsy Free Listing Bruhaha on Etsy This past monday (Jan 1) word started circulating on the internet and Face- book thatEtsy sellers could enter the code receive 20 free listings. No one really knew where this information came from, but when people en- tered their code, they did get free listings How those who waited to take advantage of the offer, lost out. Etsy cancelled it, saying it was a mistake. Apparently they had made this offer last year on Jan 1, and for some reason it worked this year too. And as soon as that happened the news spread like wildfire on Social Media. So, “congratulations” to the lucky ones who took advantage of it early in the day.4

A few other changes from EtsyYesterday, Etsy added a feature, so users can block members and member’sshops.Obviously this allows a Seller to block a trading partner, who might havescammed them or caused them a lot of grief. But the Buyer can also do the same thing. This is a feature eBay members havebeen asking for forever … to be able to block a Seller, with whom you no longerwant to trade.Another change was rolled out yesterday. And this is important. Etsy createda new section for designating your returns polices. The default is that you takeBOTH returns and exchanges. In addition default is also set that the Buyer must contact you without 14 days, and then has 30 days to return the item.If these are not the policies for your Store, you must go in and change themmanually. 5

eBay Data Reveals Resurgence of Physical Media The UK is experiencing a comeback of books, music, movies and games you can hold in your hands – especially among 18-24 year olds. The way we consume entertainment and media has transformed drastically over the last 10 years. Where digital media has given us unparalleled access to the entertainment we love, physical media has stood the test of time as an emotional anchor to ownership and collecting. Recent research by eBay in the UK reveals a resurgence of physical media, with over half of Brits preferring to buy books, music, films and videogames in their physical rather than digital form. “In today’s digitized world, physical media has an emotional and social cache that appeals to our desire to own the things we love, as well as our penchant6

for status and showing off,” said Rob Hattrell, Vice President, eBay UK. This preference for physical media also seems to be fueled by an increas- ing desire to disconnect from the digital world. When it comes to gifting, physical media is the UK’s format of choice, andmore than half (54%) of shoppers in the UK have bought a book,DVD, CD, vinyl record or video game as a gift for someone elsein the last year 7

Ingersoll Lockwood, an American political writer, la yer and novelist, combined a unique mixture of s ence fiction and fantasy into his novels from the la 1800s. Two of his most popular works of literatu were illustrated children’s stories, focusing on a p culiar fictional character whose name rings a bell 2017: Baron Trump. So the internet is going crazy about this book w Baron Trump in the title from 1893. (continued on next 2 pages.) 9

“The entire East Side is in a state of uproar,” police officers shouted through the streets, warning city folk to stay indoors for the night. “Mobs of vast size are organizing under the lead of anarchists and socialists, and threaten to plunder and despoil the houses of the rich who have wronged and oppressed them for so many years.” “The Fifth Avenue Hotel will be the first to feel the fury of the mob,” the novel continues, citing an address in New York City where Trump Tower now stands. “Would the troops be in time to save it?” Lockwood’s creations have resurfaced online in recent weeks on forum, thanks to users who shared images and conspiracy theories about the fantasy stories. Some claimed the Trump family possesses a time machine that has allowed them to remain powerful to this day. The Last President doesn’t follow the same fictional narrative of Lockwood’s previous novels, though the links to Trump are once again abundantly clear. The president’s10

hometown of New York City is fearing the collapse of the republic in this book, also titled 1900, immediately following the transition of presidential power. Some Americans begin forming a resistance, protesting what was seen as a corrupt and unethical election pro- cess. A filmmaker and Trump supporter named Leigh Scott is now trying to crowdsource funding to create a fantasy feature film, saying he’s a “huge fan of trolling.” “Even though I work in Hollywood, I actually support President Trump,” Scott says in a promotional video for his project. “The book has tons of strange references to the modern day, but we can actually amp that up a bit and put in things that only we as Trump sup- porters and people who are on the internet all the time really understand and appreciate.” 11

The Alibaba acquisition of Moneygram is blocked by theUS government Ant Financial is the Alibaba division in charge of Alipay which has the distinction of being China’s most used mobile wallet. In 2017 they announced their intention to purchase Moneygram. The publicised agreed fee was 1.2 billion dollars. Such a move would have helped them make greater inroads into the United States, as well as India and the Philippines. But it now looks that those options are not open. MoneyGram CEO Alex Holmes said in a statement: “The geopolitical environment has changed considerably since12

we first announced the proposed transaction with Ant Financial nearly a year ago. Despite our best efforts to work cooperatively with the U.S. government, it has now become clear that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United will not approve this merger.” Doug Feagin, President of Ant Financial International said that other cooperation possible in the future.
