New Arrivals at the Library

Message from the editors Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me,The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose. From “Song of the Open Road” by Walt Whitman Our magazine’s theme for the month of November is POETRY and PROGRESS. We consider poetry as a form of expression. Its artful flexibility has allowed us to facilitate fun and creative library activities that promote reading, thinking, and making. In most of these library sessions, the students played an active role, partaking in discussions with varying levels of complexity. The notion of progress became a natural addition to the magazine. The relocation of the MYP campus resulted to, among others, changes in routines and experiences. We wanted to provide a platform where students could freely share their thoughts and experiences. The MYP and DP school library is, in and of itself, an embodiment of progress. Our aim was to highlight the process and the experience of moving a library, both literally and figuratively, into another space. With the help of our talented writers and contributors, we hope to take you on a captivating journey of words, thoughts, experiences, and emotions. Our student authors and makers have put across some amazing pieces of artwork and writing. While the publication of this magazine required a lot of planning and work, we felt that we owe it to all of you to share these displays of creative thinking. Happy reading! We hope you enjoy… Ms. Sally, Ms. Sheila, Ms. Kira & Ms. Kala School Library Assistants

Why Poetry? By: Mrs. Elizabeth NilssonWhy do we After all,Need poetry? Poems don’t stallIt seems ridiculous Our homework, chores and tests. To spend our time And later on,On words and rhyme When we are grownWhen life demands so much of us. We must work hard like all the rest.So what could It could beBe the good TrickeryOf prose and poetry? By teachers everywhere…To learn new words? To see that we…Be one voice heard? Don’t watch TV…Or inspire creativity? Endlessly with no thought or care. One could say Maybe it’sIt’s the way The little bitsThat poems open our eyes Of life poems express:To wonders found Hopes unstated; The world around Dreams awaited; That preoccupied minds disguise. Emotions we try to suppress. But sometimes So, perhaps,Clever rhymes Poetry lacksWill simply make us smile. The keys to affluence,Forget our fears; But it can sparkTurn back the years; A fire in the darkReminisce and reflect awhile. Of our minds and give us balance.

Spider-swallowingBy Brian MosesThis may be something you do not know,Indeed, it may be something you do not wishto know, but you are, almost certainly,a spider swallower. You don’t know it’s happening,But be assured, it does. It’s easy to swallow mozzies or midges or flies,You open your mouth to shout out something To your matesAnd then before you know it,Something takes a nose diveDown the black hole of your throat. But spider-swallowing happens at night.Fast asleep, you’re on your back, mouth open,When a spider that’s been happily exploring Your ceilingSuddenly sees your face from above and lets Down a line.Seeing the open trapdoor of your mouth, it thinks‘I’ll just slip inside.’And at that moment when you feel something Tickle your teeth,Your mouth snaps shutThen there’s only one place for the spider to hideSo it carries on down into your insidesNever to be seen again. When you wake next morning you don’t Remember a thing,But the fact is, everyone swallows at least eight (Michael Rosen’s A to Z: The BEST Children’s Poetry from Agard to Zephaniah, 2009, pp.167-168)

The Gas Mask (part 1)By JC7 the gas has come and all will be gone. wear your masks Or you will die fast. the trees will be gone And you won´t see the dawn. you will be the only human on earththere will be no women to give some more birth. you will be the only one, nothing to do but don´t worry too much, I will be there too.

The Gas Mask (part 2) I´ll continue the story where I left off but I have to warn youthe gas might make you cough. now, we left off where you were alone at least we can listen to music on your phone. let´s make you a house, and you can´t blame if it has a mouse what matters is that I´m here, too I am here with you.

We love to read, do youhave some books to spare?
