Letter from the Editor Berry-DeliciousPhoto by: Camela Brennand I’ll never forget one year I was invited to a block party for Fourth of July. I didn’t know anyone and wasn’t expected to bring anything, but I didn’t want to show up empty handed. So the morning of the fourth, I drove out to a nearby strawberry field and purchased some fresh berries. After washing them, I placed them in a white basket, lined with a blue napkin, and tied a red ribbon around the handle. It looked so patriotic. The guests loved the simple, yet beautiful way in which the berries were displayed (they also loved the sweet scrumptious fresh picked strawberries). By the end of the night, they were calling me Martha Stewart! Here at You’re Invited Magazine, we’re celebrating America’s Independence with all things – from crafting a cute card or an adorable party favor to decorating your home or making homemade butterspreads for your morning waffles. ConfettiPatriotic Places To Visit By Cindy M. Lloyd© Can Stock Photo Inc. / slickspics 29www.youreinvitedmag.com

One of my favorite patriotic songs is “God Bless the USA”by Lee Greenwood! This song describes many places across our whole country that are so beautiful, places our forefather’s, who built this country from their sweat, tears, and perseverance, walked and lived. From the west coastto the east coast, north and south, we can all take pride in being Americans. Over the months of May-July, we celebrate threepatriotic holidays where we can show our love and support for this country and the men and women who started it and thosewho continue to protect it. Memorial Day (the last Monday of May), a day to remember those who died while serving in ourarmed forces, Flag Day (June 14th), which observes the date we adopted the first United States Flag in 1777, our flag still wavesproud and strong today, and Independence Day (July 4th), on this day in 1776 our forefathers from all thirteen colonies claimedtheir independence from England and the United States of America was born. There are so many patriotic places where you can visit and be part of our great country’s history, but I’ve compiled a fewfavorites along with some interesting facts. Pineapple Rings These pineapple rings are easy to make. Purchase five cans of pineapple (sliced) and five different flavored Jell-O® gelatin packages. Open each can of pineapple slices and drain the juice (save the juice, as you’ll be using it in place of the water when preparing the gelatin). Prepare Jell-O® according to the directions, however, replace the water indicated on the directions with the pineapple juice. Pour liquid Jell-O® mixture into each can and refrigerator until mixture thickens or overnight. Take a knife around the edge of the can to loosen the gelatin and remove pineapple slices from the cans. Slice and serve decoratively on a platter.40 Summer 2016

Confetti Beach Ball Placemats By Krafty Lizard Creations This is all about the fun days of summer. And every table needs to be dressed up for the season. So to help with those decorations, here is a great project that will put a smile on your face and a beautiful decoration on your table. If you have a basic knowledge of sewing, this project will be very easy for you. I made my placemats in an array of colorful fabric. I used cotton fabric for my project, but you can use any fabric that is stiff and doesn’t stretch. So let’s make some placemats. Makes 4 placemats ● Six different color fabrics (solid or patterned) ½ yard of each one ● Thread ● Paper (to draw your pattern) ● Compass ● Pencil ● Scissors To make the circle for the placemats, I used a large platter and traced around it on paper. If you don’t have a large round platter, take a large sheet of paper or tape a couple pieces of paper together and use a compass to draw your circle. Be sure to make the pattern large enough (I made my pattern 14” round for my sewing line).42 Summer 2016

Iron your fabric before cutting it. The first pattern you will cut is for the back of the placemat. Cut four large circles and place to the side. Fold your circle pattern once over, then again one more time to get a fairly large triangle. You will cut four pieces of each of the four fabrics you want for the front of the placemat.Take two of your triangles and sew them together on their straightseam, then take the remaining two fabric triangles and sew themtogether on their straight seam. You will now have two half-moonshapes from your triangles. Place these two half-moons together andpin. Sew together. Now you will have two large circles - one of yourback piece and one for your front.Place the right sides together and sew a ¾” hem around the circle.Don’t sew completely around the circle; leave approximately a 4 inchopening so you can turn the fabric inside out. Before you turn thefabric inside out, you’ll need to clip your seams, so they lay flat afterturning. Now turn your placemat inside out. Iron your placemat andpin down your opening. Sew 1/2” from the edge for your top stitching. Also top stitch across each triangles. Now for the center of the placemat, you will need a smaller circle. I used the lid of a butter container, as it was the right size. Cut it 1/2” larger to allow for your seams. Use a white fabric to resemble a beach ball. Take your template and add an additional ½” for your seams. Cut out four. Sew a hem around the white piece and then place on your placemat. Sew in place. Iron your placemat and you’re ready to enjoy. Have fun decorating with your new placemats. Crafting or making something on your own is a very satisfying hobby.
