Unit 0 (Lessons 1 – 3) Workbook Welcome to the first workbook from howtostudykorean.com. This workbook is designed as a supplement to the lessons in Unit 0, to be used after reading individual lessons. We suggest completing a lesson posted on our website and then working on that individual lesson in this workbook. Unit 0: Lesson 1 Throughout Unit 0, you learned how to read, write and recognize the Korean alphabet. This workbook is designed to give you practice reading and writing the characters you will need to know. In Unit 0, Lesson 1, you learned the following consonants: ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅅ, ㅈ, ㅎ - And the following vowels:ㅣ, ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅡ, ㅜ, ㅗ Before we go any further, let’s look at how to draw each letter individually. If you have no experience drawing Asian characters, drawing some of these letters might feel unnatural, but you should follow the guiding arrows in order to draw each letter correctly. In essence, the strokes are made from top to bottom or left to right. It is hard to get used to is the fact that strokes are rarely made from right to left or bottom to top. Below are all the consonants you learned from Lesson 1 of Unit 0: Practice: ㄱ (K) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㄴ (N) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㄷ (D) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㄹ (R/L) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ 1 © HowtoStudyKorean.com – Workbook – Unit 0

Practice: ㅁ (M) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㅂ (B) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㅅ (S) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㅈ (J) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Note that depending on the font you are using, or depending on one’s handwriting, this (as well most of the other letters) can sometimes look different. For example, below is another common way that you might see “ㅈ”: Practice: ㅈ (J) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㅎ (H) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ 2 © HowtoStudyKorean.com – Workbook – Unit 0

Below are the vowels that you learned in Lesson 1: Practice: ㅣ (I) ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㅡ (EU) ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㅏ (A) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㅓ (EO) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㅗ (O) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ Practice: ㅜ (U) ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___ © HowtoStudyKorean.com – Workbook – Unit 0 3

Now that you can draw all the letters from Lesson 1, let’s practice how to draw blocks of letters to make syllables. Remember, when a block of letters contains the vertically aligned vowels ㅣ, ㅓ, or ㅏ, the block will be aligned like this: 1 2 (3) When a block of letters contains the horizontally aligned vowels ㅡ, ㅜ, or ㅗ, the block of letters will be aligned like this: 1 2 (3) Practice writing the blocks containing vertically aligned vowels (ㅣ, ㅓ, or ㅏ) below: Though the English meanings are included in each example, don’t worry about those for now. Right now, you should only be concerned with the letters themselves. 서 (seo = west): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 밥 (bab = rice): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 김 (kim = common last name): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 남 (nam = south): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 전 (jeon = before): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 발 (bal = foot): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 자 (ja = ruler): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 반 (ban = half): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ Practice writing the blocks containing horizontally aligned vowels (ㅡ, ㅜ, or ㅗ) below: 후 (hu = after): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 북 (buk = north): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 눈 (nun = eye): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 손 (son = hand): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 소 (so = cow): ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 국 (kuk = soup) ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ 그 (keu = that) ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____ © HowtoStudyKorean.com – Workbook – Unit 0 4
