Starting this journey of “Unwrapping Design”, I wasn’t aware of what exactly this journey would entail. From the first assignment, I knew it was going to be a long but very fufilling semester. Beginning with a lot of restrictions and clear path, I went straight towards my comfort zone of creating text to imagery. Inspired by my already vast collection of inspiration from Pinterest, I created these collection of designs. And just as a preface, the collections of work are much better than with these first five.

2 I felt better but still not comfortable with typography and hierarchy. In this section, I restricted myself to the “grid” however each design still seemed stagnants and repetitive. I wasn’t aware that I was allowed to change the size of the font with every design, which definitely played into the similarity between each design. There was also the fact that I had written them out once and then copy and pasted it into every artboard. While still not satisfactory to my standard, a definite step up from the first week.

This week was definitely my greatest leap in my designs. I felt as though the restrictions were just enough to where it wasn’t overwhleming yet challenging. I took major considerations with depth and contrast, having enough breathin space without it having “dead space” as well as enough to contrast with typographical size and weight. I also wanted the designs to be visually engaging, where the viewer would travel in and out of the page.

This week was a lot of fun, I felt as though a huge restriction has been lifted and that I was finally able to truly design to my full extent while taking in a lot of feedback about design principles into my designs. This particular collection, I feel as though they all do not resemble one another. All have variation of placement, size, and weights despite all being from the same typeface.

5 I felt less inspired this week, however I managed to struggle my way through a few of my favorite designs so far. I definitely tried a new way to ideate this week, which was to scribble and let loose on physical paper to find a more organic design. Pinterest also was a great source of inspiration as well as looking into some of the masters of Design mentioned within the designs such as Wolfgang Weingart.

This week was very difficult, espeically with the time constraint and general workload for other classes. Although it was refreshing to have some work away from the computer, it was definitely more time consuming. I had a lot of inspiration from Stefan Sagmeister this week. I also played a lot with technology as well as attempted to work with generative design.
