July 29, 2020 2020 - 2021 Start of School Plan_ _ INTRODUCTION This document serves the purpose of guiding Fine Arts education at Southwest Christian School during the time of Covid-19 safety precautions. This guide was developed with the safety and welfare of our SCS community at the forefront of our planning and practices while maintaining excellence in Christ-centered arts education. SCS Fine Arts Statement of Purpose The Southwest Christian School Fine Arts Department develops an appreciation of the arts from process to product. We seek to awaken students to the God-given talents in them, educate them in the disciplines of the arts, and build on our legacy of excellence with Christ at our center. Southwest Christian School A RT_ _______________________ 1. Instructional Practices and Student Responsibility ● Establish regular systems of conduct within the Visual Arts at the onset of 20-21 instruction, set clear expectations, set-up communication systems for any adjustments necessary, and keep lessons current and relevant to students. ● Students should have a dedicated work space that observes social distancing practices while allowing students to focus on assignments and instruction. ● Apply art knowledge within the classroom to problem solve design challenges within the new confines. This will encourage student engagement within the studio as we embrace flexibility together. ● Art teachers will provide valuable and timely feedback focusing on student growth in the visual arts artistically, emotionally, and spiritually. ● Arrange for showcasing work on multiple platforms (ie. virtual and on campus; casual and formal presentation). ● The SCS Art community will focus on socioemotional learning to allow the arts to help students healthily interpret the world around them.
2 Southwest Christian School A RT ( continued) 2. Art Studio and Theatrical Design Shop Conduct ● Maintain a studio of orderly art stations that allow for flexibility and changes as deemed necessary. ● Increase transition times within class instruction as well as set-up and clean-up of studio work. ● Students will work predominantly from individual supplies contained in personal art bags or containers. Where possible, art teachers may develop a “minimum, better, best” list of art supplies that can be used for students to achieve mastery of the objectives being taught. ● Teacher and students will wash/sanitize all shared tools for students after each use. Provide designated areas in the studio for specific purposes in order to separate sanitized tools and resources, etc. ● Teacher will modify instruction and assignments as needed to accommodate a well-organized, safe environment for learning. ● Conduct Covid-19 preventative measures: ○ Adhere to social distancing (6 feet between actors, technicians, and teachers) by applying a room capacity formula that will calculate maximum capacity based on room size. ○ Due to the fluidity of studio use, everyone will wear masks throughout studio time. ○ Spot check temperatures of all students and school personnel entering the art studio space as needed. ○ Students must bring their own water bottle labeled with their name on the container. ○ Students may not share food or beverages. ○ Wipe down or spray all surfaces—stools, tables, art supplies etc.—before and after class, using CDC-approved disinfectants. 3. Live Gallery Exhibit and Art Event Procedures ● At all times, arts guests, students, staff, and volunteers will wear masks. ● Exhibits will be live with social distancing in mind to minimize the spread of Covid-19. ● Calculate acceptable audience attendance based on house capacity that ensures 6-foot social distancing using the room capacity formula. ● Educate arts guests on health rules and expectations in advance of each SCS arts event through: ○ SCS Website Visual Arts Page ○ Social media channels ○ Online ticket purchasing ○ Emails and SCS Weekly publications ○ Signage leading to and at the event site ● Require volunteers to follow the same safety guidelines as all other school personnel. ● Require all arts guests to: ○ undergo temperature checks before entering the gallery ○ wear masks throughout the exhibit ○ follow a pre-marked pathway of entrance in and out of the gallery. ● Provide hand sanitizer in the lobby and restrooms. ● Sanitize all public areas prior to and after an exhibit using CDC-approved disinfectants.
