PEACE SHALL SET YOU FREE, NOT WAR MONGERING Shreyas Manu reports on the events of the days while keeping in mind the graveness of the matter at hand. Reports from The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC). “Let’s settle”, thundered the delegate of Turkey in committee while talking about the Aegean Sea dispute between his country and Greece. This pretty much would have solved the debate in real life, for all the international community wanted Greece and Turkey to do was to negotiate and settle. This statement comes minutes after the delegate of Turkey explaining to the committee as to why his country wasn’t answerable to the United Nations Sea Line of Control (UNSLOC) Treaty. The fact that the delegate of Greece wanted to negotiate and settle with the delegate of Turkey just after Turkey questioned the validity of the UNSLOC treaty poses many questions and raised several eyebrows. The delegate of Italy thundered and asserted that NATO shouldn’t participate in this dispute between Turkey and Greece, which was taken with surprise considering that Italy was one of the founding members of NATO. This evident rebellion against the decisions of their organisation led to several white-faced glances from Italy’s fellow NATO members. The Aegean Sea dispute is an important one, with the delegate of Turkey pointing out that the militarization of the islands in the Aegean Sea would make Turkey more liable to attacks and lamented on the importance of their national security. The delegate of Greece also seems to agree that militarization of those islands would lead to devastating consequences to both parties involved. The way of peace is the way forward. If the delegates of Turkey and Greece can mutually come forth with a common agreement with regard to their respective positions and views on the Aegean Sea dispute, then the international community will be relieved of the same. OVER ENTHUSIASTIC OR MERELY DOING THEIR JOB? Shreyas Manu expresses his opinions with regard to the involvement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in the Aegean Sea dispute. Reports from The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC). Turkey and Greece belong to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The fact that Greece has asked for NATO’s help in the Aegean Sea dispute however, doesn’t exactly please the Turkish government. NATO Defence Ministers took swift decisions on 11 February 2016 to deploy ships to the Aegean Sea to support Greece and Turkey, as well as the European Union’s border agency Frontex, in their efforts to tackle the refugee and migrant crisis. NATO’s Standing Maritime Group arrived in the Aegean Sea within 48 hours of the Ministers’ decision. It is conducting reconnaissance, monitoring and surveillance in the territorial waters of Greece and Turkey, as well as in international waters. It is a known fact that Turkey’s fellow NATO allies are more sceptical about Turkish aggression in the world. Several discussions have apparently been held with regard to NATO expelling Turkey, but they seem to be hesitant to carry it out. The displeasure on the part of Turkey also is evident considering that they too are discussing leaving NATO. In this situation, where either most of the member nations are fed up with Turkish aggression, or are supporting Greece economically or politically, a naval fleet on the Aegean Sea doesn’t exactly look good for Turkey. Following a request from Germany, Greece and Turkey, NATO defence ministers decided on 11 February 2016 to assist with the growing refugee and migrant crisis in Europe. While this request seems blasphemy on the part of Turkey, at least for the Turkish, it certainly does seem to have helped with the refugee and migrant crisis. While Turkey seems to have a legitimate claim over a few islands in the Aegean Sea, the reporter believes that the intervention of NATO here would do good for Greece in the case of Turkish aggression and vice versa. The presence of NATO’s naval fleet in the Aegean Sea will help aid and fasten the process of settlement of dispute between Turkey and Greece. USING DIPLOMACY TO RESTORE NORMALCY Shreyas Manu presents to you an entry from the diary of Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Reports from The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC). Dear Diary, 11th February, 2016 I feel good today. Take that Turkey, checkmate. Well in any case, the fact that Turkey, Germany and Greece asked for naval support in the Aegean Sea to help with the migrant crisis was a good thing. This way we can actually help people and moderate the migrant crisis in Europe. It is obvious that the other members of my organization don’t like the fact that an aggressive country like Turkey is a part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). It is true that I have gotten several requests from several countries to expel Turkey from the organization, but I haven’t done so yet. While it is true that I have been tempted several times to do so, I keep myself in check because I understand the repercussions it would cause on international law by doing the same. Turkey being a part of NATO is a good thing for Turkey. They already aren’t part of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Turkey not being a part of NATO would be too horrible to imagine. The fact that Turkey has the United States of America’s nuclear weapons under the Power Sharing articles complicates things even more. After all this, I can only hope that Turkey decides to become less aggressive and more peaceful. A RAMPAGE OF OPINIONS AND THOUGHTS Shreyas Manu comes this time armed with graph paper reporting on the views of the delegates with regard to the position of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in the Aegean Sea dispute. Reports from The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC). Premise: The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance between 30 North American and European countries. The organization implements the North Atlantic Treaty that was signed on 4 April 1949. Following a request from Germany, Greece and Turkey, NATO defence ministers decided on 11 February 2016 to assist with the growing refugee and migrant crisis in Europe by sending a naval fleet to the Aegean Sea. Question: Do you believe that NATO needs to be the principal mediator between the Republic of Turkey and the Hellenic Republic in the event of future disputes? Sample Space: United Arab Emirates, Portugal, Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark, Philippines, United States of America, Australia, Afghanistan, Italy, Canada, France, Russian Federation, Italy, Mexico, People’s Republic of China, Finland and Japan. Result & Conclusion: The majority of the delegates seem to believe that the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) ought to be the primary intermediary between the Republic of Turkey and the Hellenic Republic. While it is true that both of these countries are part of NATO and hence more likely to cooperate, the United Nations would have been a more inclusive and possibly better intermediary considering its experience in dealing with the same. The delegates of Turkey and Greece voted in the affirmative for the aforementioned poll, to nobody’s surprise considering the fact that they seem to depend upon NATO for several things. As long as the lives of the citizens aren’t put at risk in the Aegean Sea dispute, negotiations seem to be the way forward. 2

TURKEY AND ITS ISSUE WITH BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST The delegate of Turkey grants a brief interview to your reporter, P Shreyas Manu. Reports from The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC). International Press (IP): Why does Turkey claim sovereignty of the Aegean Sea islands? Delegate of Turkey: Turkey claims sovereignty over these islands because of the strategic and historical importance they hold. They are also extremely important to our national security and the interests of the Turkish people. IP: Does Turkey believe that their sending of oil drilling ships to Cyprus was justified on their part? Delegate of Turkey: Yes, sending oil ships was completely justified since Turkey has repeatedly been discriminated against. An evidence of this discrimination was the seclusion of Turkey from the East Med pipeline project which has now been reversed as a result of relentless pressure on the international community by the Turkish delegate. IP: Why is it that you want NATO to mediate between Turkey and Greece instead of appealing to the United Nations for the same? Delegate of Turkey: We restored to NATO mediation because it is a tried and tested method which helps in solving disputes between NATO members. It was easy, simple, and quick. IP: In the light of the recent earthquake in the Aegean Sea, how does Turkey plan on securing Izmir? Delegate of Turkey: The earthquake does create complications but we have the delegate of Turkey has secured an agreement with the Hellenic Republic guaranteeing the presence of a maritime and aerial corridor which grants uninterrupted access to Turkish ships thereby securing the port. EGALITARIANISM Deeshna D Kadakia , reporting from the United Nations Human Right Council (UNHRC) traces the committee discussion on human rights with a slogan equality equals acceptance. According to Article 6; Right to Fair Trial everyone is entitled to a fair and public hearing with procedural regularity by an impartial judge. The delegate of Burkina Faso stated that all genders should be treated equally, that is the country should be free from sexism. New legislation adopted in the context of security concerns restricted freedom of expression. Progress was made on protecting women’s sexual and reproductive rights. The delegate of USA expresses, “lot of racial discrimination continues-police continue to kill black people in numbers disproportionate to their overall share of the population. Unarmed black person is five times as likely to be killed by the police as compared to an unarmed white person”. Americans nearly unanimously support the principle that individuals have the right to freedom of expression, including the right to criticize government and religious leaders. An overwhelming majority of Americans also believe that the government should not have the right to prohibit discussion of certain political or religious views and that people should have the right to demonstrate peacefully against their government. Moving forward to the delegate of the Kingdom of Spain communicates- “The government generally took steps to prosecute officials who committed human right abuses. In some instances, officials engaged in corruption and created the impression of impunity”. The constitution and the law prohibit arbitrary arrest and detention, and also provide for the right of any person to challenge the lawfulness of his or her arrest or detention in court and the same has been observed by the government. Government officials are often cooperative and responsive to their views. The delegate of Australia states that the Australian government is founded on the rule of law and has a strong tradition of respect for the rights and freedoms of every individual. Human rights are recognized and protected across Australia through a range of laws at the federal, state and territory levels of the constitution with the common law. With further discussion, the delegates agree that no country is perfect and progress is made to ensure that the future generations get their human rights. 3

PRISONMENT AT HOME Deeshna D Kadakia, reporting from the United Nations Human Right Council (UNHRC). Dear Diary, 31st October, 2020 It was astonishing to hear about my neighbor who had a horrendous experience after being tested positive for Covid. On 9th October the day started with a little cough and then increased to cough and cold which was neglected by him and his family members. The covid test was done. On 11th October, time 4:26pm reports were uploaded. It was astonishing to hear that the neighbor who took precautions perfectly was tested positive. This was a nightmare for him and his family. On consulting the doctor, he had gone for a pet scan which showed that the virus has infected the lungs deeply and had to be admitted in the ICU. Having 30 tablets and tasteless hot food was not at all an easy task. After a couple of days, he was transferred to another hospital for better treatment. On the 14th day of his quarantine he had gone through with the complete body checkup. He got to know that he had blood pressure of 380 and the covid test report was positive again. It was a terrible situation- he could not meet his family members and friends for another ten to fifteen days. Again, the same routine started which was initialized at the time of first test. At this time, he had to be more cautious and have another course of drugs, food intake, medication and other activity which makes his lungs and sugar level to get balanced. At last it took 34 days to get rid of covid and he became a covid warrior but he lost his energy level, has lost weight, became dull and inactive and his lifestyle had changed. MAKING A LIVING WITH BIO-WAR Deeshna D Kadakia, reporting from the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the failures of countries to combat with Covid-19. DOES TECHNOLOGY MATTER? Deeshna D Kadakia, reporting from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the opinion poll conducted in the committee on whether they agree on the question asked. Premises: Most of the countries are failing to make the covid-19 vaccine due to technology crisis Question: Is there a need for improvement in technology for the country to make the covid-19 vaccine? Sample Space: U.S.A, Yemen, Syria, Australia, Israel, Uganda, Lebanon, Italy. Results & Conclusion: Almost all the countries need better technology and skill to make the vaccine. Making a vaccine for covid is not as easy as making the virus. It requires a lot of skills. It is not shocking to know that Lebanon and Italy say No for the question asked. Lebanon belongs to the immediate wealth group that is in the wealth range of $25000 to $100000 per adult. In this pandemic situation also, Lebanon is pretty safe for travelling and also, they do not need technology but need resources. Italy develops vaccines for increase in immunity, so instead of vaccines Italy's government needs good hospitals and health centers. With improvement in technology they need more workers which affects the mental health of the workers so this will again bring the health issue. But other countries like the U.S.A, Yemen, Australia and others need the technology so that they can protect their citizens and make their country prosper.Lastly, it is necessary for all countries to have technology, skill and also protect their workers. INTERVIEW ANSWERS ALL! Deeshna D Kadakia, reporting from World Health Organization (WHO) with an interview with the delegate of India International Press (IP): Mam, why are there several crashing economic rates in the country? Also, that the vaccine will be supplied to the covid patients first and then to the suspected ones and then the rest. 5

CHINA-WHY? Mahima Agarwal, reporting from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Dear diary, 30th October, 2020 Ah, China! I have been living in china for the past 20 years. I have never lived with my parents, I grew up living with my aunt until the age of 24. After the age of 24 I saw it fit to become independent so I took up a job of working at a government facility. I got my medical degree from a community college and the job I was presented with was to be a doctor at the prison facility. In the starting months, the job was like any other job a person would have. But in the coming months I learned the shocking horrors of performing notorious processes like harvesting organs from prisoners and mental patients and slaves. I was mentally tortured by having to take part in these tasks. The Chinese penal system, which lacks a fair judicial process, employs an extensive network of forced labour camps in order to “reform” criminals through labour. Its purpose, however, is to remove political opposition from society while simultaneously improving the economy. Worse, as an institutional tool for the government to stifle political opposition, the penal system almost inevitably employs the use of both physical and psychiatric torture. In such a penal system, torture is justified as a means to secure confessions and the compliance of political dissidents. In the absence of due process and improper criminal procedures, coupled with the enticement of profit-making, prisoners are susceptible to illegal organ harvesting and trafficking globally. I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart I am the Negro bearing slavery’s scars I am the red man driven from the land I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek — And finding only the same old stupid plan Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak. ISONOMY Mahima Agarwal, reporting from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) traces the committee discussion on human rights. According to Article 2, Right to Life, everyone’s right to life shall be protected by law. No one should be deprived of his/her life, intentionally save in the execution of a sentence of a court following his conviction of a crime for which the penalty is provided by the law. The delegate of the United Arab of Emirates (UAE) states that UAE authorities have launched a sustainable assault on freedom of expression and association since 2011. UAE residents who have spoken about human rights issue are at serious risk of arbitrary detention, imprisonment, and torture. Many are serving long prison terms or have left the country under pressure. The delegate of Madagascar affirms that human rights in Madagascar are protected under the country’s constitution. However, the extent to which such rights are reflected in practice, is subject to debate. The 2009 human rights report by the United States Department of State noted concerns regarding the suspension of democratic electoral process. Furthermore, reports of corruption arbitrary arrest and child labor highlight the prevalence of human rights issues in the country. Moving forward, the delegate of Poland said, human rights in Poland are not always upheld in practice. From 1993 to 2019, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Poland violated human rights in 989 cases. In 2020, ILGA-Europe ranked Poland lowest in the European Union for protection of LGBT rights. The government actively undermines the rule of law and human rights protection and curbs free expression and assembly. Civil society organizations working on women’s rights and migration have had their state funding cut. Poland’s LGBT community has been under regular attack by the ruling party, declaring some towns “LGBT” free zones. Next, the delegate of Denmark said The 3 Ds - Dignity, Dialogue and Development – are based on Denmark’s positions and key priorities on human rights. This country is a leading and a very cooperative country. With further discussion, the delegates agreed that human rights are still not given to few people and changes have to be made to ensure that human rights are given to everyone now and in future generations too. 6

GLOBAL CONSENSUS VS DOMESTIC LEGISLATION Aanchal Mathur, reporting from the United Nations Office Of Drugs And Crime (UNODC), tracing the gathered committee’s discussion about whether the laws passed regarding cryptocurrency should be a global consensus or a domestic legislation. The laws passed regarding the use of cryptocurrency are different for each country as stated by the respective delegates. As the concern about whether the decrees should be an international consensus or a domestic one arose for discussion, most delegates favored the former. As the discussion proceeded, the delegate of Austria and the delegate of Eswatini commonly stated that this matter would need a joint opinion. Adding to that, the delegate of South Africa expressed that different laws for different countries might cause more harm than good and could also risk the security of nations. Following this, the delegate of Kenya put forth the fact that hackers would not only target their country but also work internationally, and therefore, having an international consensus would be a lot more efficient than separate domestic laws. The delegate of Japan soon suggested the idea of having global consensus but at the same time, individual domestic laws. This would result in laws that would be accustomed to the countries while still having a common stance globally with other countries. The delegate of the United Kingdom, not agreeing with the majority, believed that having a global consensus would not be true to democracy. The delegate continued to add that democratic citizens would have different opinions about the matter and having only one global law would definitely cause chaos. As the matter went on for discussion, the delegates did not come up with a specific stance but did deliver ideas and discuss the problems of their representative countries. IS BANNING CRYPTOCURRENCY GOING TO AFFECT THE TERRORIST ATTACKS? Aanchal Mathur, reporting from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), highlighting the discussion about cryptocurrency facilitating terrorist attacks. One of the major uses of cryptocurrency has been in illegal drug trafficking, human trafficking, terrorism, etc. The dark net has facilitated the terrorists in hiding, recruitment and has become a reservoir of propaganda. The delegates of countries stated several times that cryptocurrency helps fund terrorism as the transactions made are anonymous and cannot be easily tracked. The delegate of Cuba suggested that nations should focus on analyzing the modes of the cryptocurrency being regulated to the terrorists. In further discussions, the delegate of Thailand mentioned that cryptocurrency also has benefits that are being overseen. The delegate mentions that cryptocurrency is not the only reason for terrorism and its legalization should seriously be taken into consideration. On the same, lines, the delegate of Uruguay stated that the regulation should be the aspect to be focused on as terrorism will not be affected by the legalization. Terrorism being funded by cryptocurrency is an existing fact. The legalization would just facilitate the problem even more. Regulations and laws regarding the misuse could be passed but terrorists do not really get affected by these. The usage of dark net would increase tremendously by the legalization of the virtual currency. Other methods of illegal trading would probably come up. Legalization or not, the terrorists will do what they have to and cryptocurrency legalization would but be easing their process out even more. 7

DOMESTIC OR INTERNATIONAL - A CHOICE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE Srita, reporting from the The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) traces the committee’s discussion on legalization of cryptocurrency with special emphasis on international consensus or domestic consensus. Cryptocurrency is nothing but digital money that is playing a very vital role in the world. The delegate of Austria stated that the domestic consensus should be applied to every individual nation arguing that there would be different problems for different nations. Around six countries have not legalized the use of cryptocurrencies in their nations. The delegates of Eswatini and United Kingdom (UK) agreed to the delegate of Austria stating that the domestic consensus is better than international consensus for the same reason although cryptocurrency is still a controversial issue in Eswatini. The delegate of the UK stated that different countries have different views on the use of cryptocurrencies. Following this the delegate of Mexico stated that the nation would want to go for international consensus as it wanted the United Nations (UN) to make laws on cryptocurrencies for equality among all the nations. Although in March 2018, the Mexican government issued a law legalizing cryptocurrencies in the country. Following this South Africa was in agreement with Mexico, however there are no such laws on legalization on cryptocurrencies in South Africa. Furthermore, the delegate of Japan agreed for the international consensus for legalization of cryptocurrencies too and the delegate also stated that there should again be separate laws for each and every nation according to their situations. With further discussion, the delegates of Kenya and Egypt concurred with the other nations for the international consensus while also stating that cyber safety is of utmost importance. In the future the delegates can hope the legalization of cryptocurrencies is made in the favour of the majority whether its international consensus or domestic consensus. A NOTE TO MYSELF: DEADLY DRUGS AND TERRIFIC TERRORISM Srita Talluri, reporting from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), tries to analyse the relation between drugs, crime and cryptocurrency through a self-note. Cryptocurrency… cryptocurrency... cryptocurrency... Now this really seems just another type of currency right? No, you are wrong, it's an online currency which cannot be seen. Now this seems a bit different and difficult right? Yes absolutely it is different but not difficult to understand. Cryptocurrency is generally used in online transactions and also many other illegal activities such as drugs and crime that are trafficking. Yes you are right it is a whole lot of illegal activities, but mainly it is not legal in many countries , well I guess there is no point in making it illegal , that seemed very different when I said That right let me explain you , when it is illegal people have more urges to do it so where is the point in making it illegal , so I personally feel it should be made legal and then actions should be made on it. I guess now you got my point why I said there is no point in making it illegal. Well, coming back to some important points that I have learned today is a saying of my mom, “I will give you freedom to do anything because stopping you would cause more urge to do that thing”. It has been very useful today as I could relate it to the topic which I am discussing or researching about. Well now I say that trafficking and terrorism are the problems which are there from many years now the point of concentration should be on how bitcoins are helping these activities, I say for sure cause it is totally online transaction. On a concluding note to myself I say that it is neither trafficking nor terrorism, but CRYPTOCURRENCY which is leading to a bad end! 8
