\"laws of motion\" and his guessed equation of force he Newton’s Crazy Idea was able to calculate how long it should take for the moon to orbit the earth. The result was ridiculously I’m sure you are not surprised if I say your low (less than 1 day) so he reasoned that was wrong. weight (gravity) is due to the Earth pulling Then he tried a force inversely proportional to the distance squared ( you down. That's because that fact has entered F=GmM/d2 ) and calculated 32 days which was 20% too large. Since our common knowledge; however 400 years the calculations didn't agree with the known 27 — days, he assumed ago people would have thought you were crazy to suggest such an idea. Some people thought you were held to the ground by the air pressure pushing down on you. Others thought that since you are made of materials that came from the ground (carrots, his entire idea was wrong about gravity and he put his notebook potatoes, meat that came from animals eating grasses, etc.) the stuff calculations on a shelf and essentially ignored them for over 20 years. of which you are made is trying to get back to the ground. No one In later life, Newton was appointed Warden of the Royal Mint knew what caused your weight. Then came along that boy genius and when attending a Royal Dinner, he seated next to his good Isaac Newton. Well not really a boy. When college closed due to the plague (a contagious disease transmitted by rats) in cities, Newton went to wait it out on a relative's farm. There is a story that while sitting under an apple tree, an apple hit him and got him thinking about \"gravity\". Actually there is no proof that happened but it does make a good story. The truth is actually more interesting. Isaac Newton knew that an object in space moves in a straight line unless a force is pulling it to the side. He knew the moon moves around the Earth so there must be a force friend and Royal Astronomer pulling it toward the Edmund Halley. Incidentally Earth preventing it from Halley's Comet, which comes moving in a straight line. back every 76 years, is named Since we seem to also be for Halley. Edmund mentioned pulled toward the Earth, to Newton that the distance to he started guessing what the Moon had recently been factors determine how better determined and Isaac strong that \"gravity\" remembered his early calculation based on the distance to the Moon. force would be. Since He went back and redid his calculation based on the new correct more massive objects distance. Newton obtained perfect agreement with the observed 27 — are pulled more (a brick day orbital period of the Moon when he assumed the gravitational weighs more than a force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance. For the penny) he reasoned the first time in history, mankind understood the motions of the planets force is proportional to and moons. mass ie. 2 bricks weigh He was able to calculate the paths of the planets; in fact the twice that of 1 brick; 3 planet Neptune and the dwarf planet kg weighs three times 1 kg. Newton then invoked \"Newton's third Pluto were discovered based on such law\": the Action-Reaction Law. Forces (pushes & pulls) always come calculations. Tides of the oceans could in pairs: if object A pushes-or-pulls on B, then we find object w be explained and predicted and NASA pushes-or-pulls back on A. Since he guessed the Earth was pulling even today uses Newton's equations to the Moon, then the Moon must be pulling on the Earth. Gravity calculate spacecraft orbits. Two hundred must be a mutual pull between masses; and if it depended on the one years after Newton, Albert Einstein was mass, then it also depended on the other mass. Mathematics tells us able to discover even more properties of that proportionalities can be expressed as equations. If the force (F) gravity when he developed his General is proportional to each mass (m & M) then F = G m M where G Theory of Relativity. We have measured is just some proportionality constant (a number). For example if m gravitational waves and discovered black or M is 3 times larger on the right side of the equation, then F is 3 holes which were unthought of in Newton's days. What do you think times larger on the left side. He then got to thinking about distance. Isaac Newton meant when he said: He suspected that this \"gravity force\" was weaker if the masses were \"If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the farther apart. So he guessed (incorrectly) that d (distance) was in shoulders of giants.\" the denominator in the equation i.e. F=G m M / d. Knowing the © 2021 Dr. David R. Local History Written by Billy Warren So, Sweetwater Creek, like other natural and human-made sites in the Shoals,, has quite an interesting story. Many of the stories have Did You Know? been told over and over, while others are waiting to be revealed. Together, these stories make the Shoals area the wonderful place that Sweetwater Creek: A Brief History local citizens deeply appreciate. In the 1820’s, Mr. John Brahan and his family began the SOMETHING TO DO: construction of a mansion in Florence which would eventually 1. (Patton Island in the Tennessee River is named b. Continue south on Sweetwater Avenue and for him.) Finally, a later descendant, Mr. John notice the creek running beside it. Follow the creek D. Weeden, and his family lived in the mansion to Huntsville Road. At that spot, imagine what the known as Sweetwater for many years. battle between Union and Confederate soldiers must have endured there. In the early 1920’s, the land boom occurred in the Shoals area because of the possibility 2. (You read about this venture in the January issue of Kidsville News.) As part of this land boom, Mr. 3. Is there a natural or human-made structure or Weeden, owner of the Sweetwater mansion and the adjacent site – maybe even in your neighborhood – that you’ve 4,000 acres, set aside several hundred acres to develop an entire wondered about? Ask adults to share their stories about it. Check community that would bear his name, Weeden Heights -- which resources in your public library. Go on-line. In other word, try your still exists today. hand at being a local historian. Good luck! And this is where the title of this month’s article, “Sweetwater: A Brief History,” enters the story. For, you see, there was a large, beautiful spring of delicious water very near the mansion. Because the water from this mighty spring was both pure and pleasing to the taste, it was called “Sweetwater Spring” and the nearby mansion was known (and is known today) simply as “Sweetwater.” The spring produced sufficient water for Mr. Weeden to hire workers to erect a water tower on Franklin Street in Weeden Heights and to install a system of underground pipes so that water could be provided for all of the families who had bought homes in that community. It was a rather primitive system by today’s standards, but it was evidently kept free of impurities as there were few cases of water-borne illnesses in the community over the years. An agent for Mr. Weeden would visit each home once per month to collect $1.00 for what was termed “water rent.” But the story of this huge, prolific spring doesn’t end with its supplying water to families in Weeden Heights; it also fed a picturesque creek which ran at the foot of the hill behind the mansion, then beside a roadway which was named for it (Sweetwater Avenue), and underneath Huntsville Road (near the location today of the Salvation Army headquarters) before emptying into the Tennessee River. The 1852 map of Florence, which is mainly devoted to downtown Florence, shows Sweetwater Creek very clearly. (See the map attached to this article.) Amazingly, the creek still follows that path today! There was a skirmish during the Civil War between Union and Confederate troops on Sweetwater Creek near the site where it flows under Huntsville Road. From an account recorded in a diary of a Union soldier, Confederate troops had the advantage of being in their own territory; the surviving Union soldiers eventually left town and returned to their camp near Huntsville.
