?? ? ? ?? ? ?? ? ?? ?? What’s it Like to Be? ? ? ? ? ?? ?? ? ? ? ? ?? ? ? Please tell our readers a little about yourself, Sports nutritionist Diana Nguyen including your name and occupation. Nguyen sets up a healthy pregame breakfast. My name is Diana Nguyen, and I am the director of sports nutrition at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. I Kidsville News! 7 oversee the nutrition care for 23 varsity sports and the athletes who play those sports. I am also the owner of Nguyen With Nutrition, LLC, which is my consulting business outside of my university work. When did you know that you wanted to be a sports nutritionist? Always an athlete, I was constantly bouncing from sport to sport and from season to season. Whether it was soccer, swimming or track, among other activities, I was always doing something. My mother was also a dietitian, so nutrition was a part of my life from the beginning. Back when I was younger, sports nutrition as a field didn’t exist. Knowledge was limited, and resources were few. Since then, this career field has exploded, and now, everyone is interested in learning more about nutrition and its role with performance.  In college, I originally majored in biology on the path to becoming a veterinarian. However, that’s also when I learned that the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University athletic program had a full- time sports dietitian on their payroll. I was immediately interested in learning more, so I reached out to her and started interning with Virginia Tech athletics. I fell in love with the profession, changed my college major and never looked back. What education or training is needed for your job? I received a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics with a minor in psychology from Virginia Tech, went on to complete my dietetic internship at the University of Virginia and then returned to Virginia Tech for my master’s degree. I also took an exam to become a registered dietitian. Being a sports nutritionist or dietitian is much more than asking people to eat broccoli and grilled chicken. This specialized medical field is backed by scientific research and many hours of required experience in the field. What is your favorite thing about your job? Every day is different! I also love to see how nutrition can change and improve performance and the overall health of young athletes. What is the most challenging thing about your work? Constantly having to defend nutrition against amateur nutritionists and Instagram influencers is an ongoing challenge. Such people have tremendous influence, and unfortunately, no education on what they are telling people. What do you wish everyone knew about nutrition? I want everyone to know that sports dietitians are the experts in the field of nutrition, and also that diets don’t work. Nutrition is about lifestyle. Nutrition as a lifestyle means you choose to fuel your body for wellness and health. Most of the food we put into our bodies is to help us stay healthy and strong, but the treats we all enjoy can have space, too. The diet culture can be very toxic and implies that there are a start and a finish. This mindset is wrong. Nutrition is something we all must consider every day because we eat every day. At various times during those years, a small \"lending library\" was established. This type of small library might be in a store or in a public building. Residents would borrow a book or two and, upon returning the book(s) after reading item borrow one or two more. In the mid-1880's, a group of ladies in Florence worked together to organize a larger collection of books to develop a specific system of checking books in and out. They called this new, well organized collection the Southern Library. All of the efforts to have a real public library in Florence left to members of the Florence Exchange Club to clear the way, with the approval of the City Council, for the formation of a Library Board. The year was 1937 when this new board established for the purpose of raising funds to construct a building to house a library. The project moved slowly because the United Sates was just beginning to recover from the Great Depression. In 1945, Mr. Louis Rosenbaum, owner of a group of local theaters, donated $25,000 to help the library move forward. Mr. Clyde Anderson allowed some space to be used as a public library until a building could be constructed. 14 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals August 2020

Under the guidance of the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), each school has established procedures to maximize efforts to keep campuses safe from COVID-19 outbreaks. We ask parents/ guardians, students, faculty, and staff to assist us by following the procedures. SAFETY & PRECAUTIONS (this is a general list, may vary by school) • Teach and reinforce good hygiene measures such as handwashing, covering coughs, and face coverings if social distancing is not possible. • Encourage frequent hand sanitizing for students and staff as they come in and out of the building each day. • Provide hand soap, sanitizer, paper towels/hand dryers in all bathrooms, classrooms, and frequently trafficked areas. • Post signage to communicate how to stop the spread of COVID-19. Preventative measures include staying home when sick and good hygiene. • Clean/disinfect frequently touched surfaces. • Encourage students and staff to bring hand sanitizer and face masks/ coverings to use from home. • Ensure water fixtures and features are cleaned regularly. • Ensure ventilation systems operate properly and increase the circulation of outdoor air as much as possible, as long as this does not pose a safety or health risk to students or staff. • Conduct deep cleaning of schools prior to students/ staff returning; schedule periodic cleanings during weekends or school holidays/breaks (to the extent practicable).
