The hardest thing about my job is the weather. In the summer, the heat and bugs make it very hard to get My name is Greg Varner, and I am a horse farrier. My job is to take things done. In the winter, I work in the wind and cold. Every night care of horse feet, called hooves. Taking care of a horse’s feet is important because horses stand up most I wish everyone knew how of the time. If their feet are hurt or injured, the horse won’t walk, may horse farriers help horses. A question that many people become sick and then will need a veterinarian’s ask is, “Don’t those nails care. Having a farrier trim and shoe the horse’s hurt their feet?” Fortunately, feet is one of the most important ways a horse the shoes are nailed into the owner can keep their horse healthy and safe. hard fingernail part of the hoof — not the actual foot. The horse doesn’t feel the nail at all. Many people love horses but may not understand them or know how smart horses can be. For example, if you are riding a horse and lose your way off the trail, your horse can find his way back to safety, as long as you allow him to take the lead. Another example of how smart horses are is the adaptability that enables them to face any weather, terrain or temperature. A horse can learn to live in any environment. For centuries, men and women have ridden horses for this reason. If you are interested in becoming a farrier, the first thing to do is find a barn and spend time around horses. Ask the barn owner if you can sweep the barn, clean stalls, anything to find out if you like working around horses. Maybe you will find your future involves four feet and a swishy tail! How did you prepare yourself to work with horses? I always knew I wanted to work with horses but wasn’t sure what jobs were related to horse care. Before I became a farrier, I trained horses, showed horses at horse shows and rode horses for fun. When I was 30, I decided to become a farrier and went to a community college for three months to learn how to be a farrier. Some people shadow or work with a farrier for about a year to learn the skills needed. What is your favorite thing about your job? The best thing about my job is that I can be around horses all day, every day. Making a living at something I love to do is a joy. I have a few favorite stories related to horses I have cared for. Once, I worked on a miniature horse that was only three days old. The little horse’s feet were the size of dimes — impressive when I think of how those tiny little hooves belonged to a horse that would grow up to be no bigger than a large dog. I have also worked on a vast Belgian horse that weighed 2,450 pounds. The feet on that horse were as large as the size of 5-gallon buckets. 24 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals November 2020
