This Page Brought To You By: ?? ? ? ? ?? ?? ? ? ?? ?? What’s it Like to Be? ? ? ? ? ?? ?? ? ? ? ?? ? ? Please tell our readers a little about yourself, including your name and occupation. Hi! My name is Amber Rupinta, and I am a broadcast news anchor and reporter with TV station ABC11/WTVD. As a newscaster, I anchor the evening news each weekday at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. During the day, I am often out in the field taping news stories on everything from politics to weather-related issues or human interest stories. We work under tight deadlines in the news industry, but it is very exciting as each day is different. When did you know that you wanted to be a broadcast journalist? Growing up in a family with eight kids, I was the most curious out of all of us. I loved asking questions and looking for answers and enjoyed being in front of a crowd. When I was a teenager, my sister suggested I should become a reporter because I asked so many questions. After she said that, I began watching the news more closely and realized it looked like a really fun career I would enjoy. I was about 16 when I decided I would major in journalism/ communications in college and pursue a career in broadcast news. What kind of education or training is needed in your specific field? While there isn’t one specific major you need to study to become a reporter, the most popular is journalism or communications. Some reporters want to specialize in a field, so they may major in business, political science, or meteorology and minor in journalism. Internships are very important in the news industry because a lot of what you learn happens in the field, not in the classroom, so getting that experience and making connections with people already working in the business through an internship is key. What is your favorite thing about being an anchorwoman? I enjoy that each day is different at work, and we get to meet many inspiring people and witness historic events. I also like being informed on current events, but one of the most favorite things about my work is when I help someone in need or help a nonprofit organization have a successful event by spreading the word through my reports. Some of the most rewarding reporting we’ve done has even led to new laws being passed once it was brought to a lawmaker’s attention. What is the most challenging thing about the work you do? The most challenging thing about the news is that we never close, not even for big holidays. News happens 365 days a year, so we have to work many holidays. We also work odd hours. I worked the morning news for 10 years and we had to be at work at 3:30 a.m. each weekday. I’m enjoying my sleep much more now working on the afternoon news. What do you wish everyone knew about television and the news? While you only see a few people on the television reporting the news, there is a large team behind the scenes that works to put together a newscast. Each person on the team has an important job to ensure we are accurate and tell all sides of a story while creating a smooth, live broadcast for ABC11 each day. 6 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals July 2020

The Florence Bridge Company’s Covered Bridge Across the Tennessee River By Lee Freeman, Florence-Lauderdale Public Library, Local History - Genealogy Department According to Florence resident and future mayor Mr. John B. Weakley, The bridge was apparently a toll bridge as the August 13, 1842 advertisement for the Military Ferry maintained that it charged “only half Jr. (1862-1928) writing in the Florence Times of Friday, December 19, as much as is charged at the Bridge.” 1890, the first bridge across the Tennessee River at Florence was built in As to the destruction of the bridge, TS Fedore was right:According to the Nashville Union & American of Wednesday, March 15, 1854, the Florence 1840. Bridge was, in fact destroyed on Originally the only way to cross the river was by ferry, of which there March 10, 1854. According to this paper which picked up the story were several. For example, in the from the Florence Gazette (there are no known existing issues of the Florence Gazette of February, Gazette from 1854): A fearful tornado which destroyed 1827 Matthew Neal advertised much valuable property, visited the landing in that town [Florence] his horse ferry boat. It is truly a melancholy scene to stand on the there was also a military ferry with wharf and witness the terrible destruction. Company being unable to affect an insurance against wind,” with the loss failing heaviest on James Irvine, James H. Weakley, John Simpson, however Colbert County resident Robert M. Patton, and Martin Harkins. After the destruction of the Florence Bridge locals were forced to go of South Florence, Mr. TS Fedore (which may have been a pen-name as back to using the ferry. According to Fedore: After the destruction of the bridge came the ‘ferry’ boat, and a I can’t locate any information on him), remembered a slightly different travesty! A flat boat. That would never do. No, Sir. So the same spirit that builded [sic] the first bridge established the “Florence Steam set of events, telling Times readers that: Ferry.” How long the steam ferry operated isn’t known. Away back in the first half of this century, in the days when men Four years after the tornado blew away, in 1858, the Memphis & Charleston (M&C) Railroad bought out the Florence Bridge Company established industries and called them factories or foundries, before in order to construct and operate their new railroad bridge. the word ‘plant’ was applied to other than vegetation, the good and solvent men of Florence built the “Old Florence Bridge.” According to Fedore the Old Florence Bridge was built in the 1830s by the Florence Bridge Company, and was “a double bridge, that is, it had two roadways, one for persons or teams traveling each way so as to prevent a [traffic] jam or confusion.” Mr. Fedore wrote that the spans of the Florence Bridge were “twice the length of the current crazy-quilt structure, and the whole of it was housed in,” meaning it was a covered bridge. It looked “very much like an underground tunnel after entering, because of its darkness.” In the article Mr. Fedore further stated that the bridge was destroyed on March 10, 1854. “A Little after daylight,” he wrote, “it was blown into the river by a river cyclone.” There were only two spans on the south side left standing on their stone piers, “but by a strange coincidence on the morning of March 10, 1855, and about the same hour, the remaining two spans were blown from their position and torn into fragments.” On January 12, 1832 the Alabama Legislature passed an act incorporating the Florence Bridge Company of Florence, Alabama, for the construction of a bridge between Tuscumbia and Florence (Sheffield didn’t exist until 1884). According to Fedore, “the company issued ‘scrip’ called Florence Bridge Money, which was, locally, as good as gold in those well-begone days when people were not given to timocracy [government in which a certain amount of property is necessary for office].” The bridge reportedly cost the huge sum of $165,000 and was finally completed in 1837. 14 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals July 2020

Both bears will scavenge for food, leaving a pic-a-nic basket in danger. But since Yogi stood on two legs, and is, after all, smarter than the average bear, we feel he is indisputably a grizzly.
