Welcome to the very first issue of Tranzlook. I am sitting out in the garden in a very hot and sunny London and lockdown restrictions have finally come to an end. (Hello Summer) I am very excited about putting together the contents for this magazine. It has been created based on research by myself and support from so many people. CELEBRITY TRANS CULTURE The second decade of the twenty-first century saw an explosion of highly visible transgender presence in the mass media. Caitlyn Jenner-the former Olympic athlete, Kardashian clan member, and reality television star- finally came out after years of tabliod speculation, in a series of high- profile media events in 2015, including a ratings-grabbing interview with Diane Sawyer on the broadcast news show 2020, a cover story in Vanity Fair that featured photographs by acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz, and a short-lived, much-maligned reality TV show. I am Cait. Jenner might have had a higher profile, but actors like Laverne Cox and writers like Janet Mock had more staying power and more substantive things to say, as did the transgender sisters Lana Wachowski and Lily Wachowski. The Netflik orginal series SenseB offered one of the most narratively complex, visually arresting and aesthetically challenging works in contemprary mainstream media. The sci-fi thriller revolved around eight individuals from around the world, all born at the same moment, who suddenly begin to share the same sensory experiences, trans actor Jamie Clayton plays transsexual lesbian Nomi Marks, one the the \" sensates\". The most critically acclaimed and commercially successful trans-centered show was Amazon's Transparent, based loosely on show- runner Jill Soloway's experience as the adult child of a late-transitioning transgender parent and produced by transgender culture makers Rhys Ernst and Zackary Drucker. INTERVIEW/ USA Your age? I am 24 To which gender identity do you identify? Transwomen Your marital status? In a relationship - not married How do clothes make you feel? I do not have any feelings when wearing them. I just wear them because they are required. How do you feel as a consumer when shopping for clothes? If feels intrusive when shopping for clothing, as I have to go into clothing sections in-store that I do not quite blend into. I look like I should not be there. Online shopping is very limited also as you only see what the clothing looks like on a biological women. My body type does not quite fit that. \" laughs nervously.\" Would you shop in a bricks and mortar shop that was exclusively designed for you? That depends. I do not like shopping in brick and mortar stores as I feel extremely uncomfortable. I do prefer online stores. If the store made trans people feel comfortable, I may consider it. Would you like to see a future magazine designed exclusively for trans women? Oh yes that would be cool. I think it would be interesting to see and read. When you go shopping what is the most important thing for you, in terms of how people make you feel? How people perceive me. I can feel them constantly Judging me while I am shopping for clothes. INTERVIEW/LONDON Your age? 25 What is your marital status? Single What type of clothing do you currently wear? I pretty much wear anything. I usually go for clothing that is cheap to buy. Where do you currently shop for clothes? Local stores such as Asda's George, New Look, River Island and some independent lesser known brands. What would you like to see future fashion brands do for you in terms of fashionable clothing and sizing issues? I'm not sure on this. I guess I'd like to see them take trans people more seriously. I know there needs to be a change, I just don't know what exactly, I haven't given it too much thought. What have you found to be the biggest challenge when looking for clothing? The biggest challenge I have found is finding the right clothes that are compatible with my body type. They just look \"wrong\" for my body. Has your height effected your clothing choice? No I can't say it has. Would you use a virtual fitting room if there was a store designed exclusively for you? I'm not sure. Maybe. As I don't shop in stores much I don't have a preference. INTERVIEW/USA At what age did you become aware that you were in the wrong body? I think I was about 14 - 15 years old just about to start high school. What have you found to be the biggest challenge when looking for clothing? They do not fit. They are often not suitable for my body type, which means that they do not look good. Instore buying is very uncomfortable and online options are extremely limiting. There is no guarantee that what I buy will be suitable, or will even fit me. Would you shops in a bricks and mortar shop that was exclusively designed for you as a transgender women? Oh yes definitely. I do love my clothes, \" Oh yes I absolutely do.\" What style of clothing do you currently wear? I wear sporty, vintage, casual and some luxury. When you go shopping what is the most important thing for you, in terms of how people make you feel? I just want people not to look at me like I'm different just because I'm buying women's clothing. I just want to be accepted for who I am. How do you feel as a consumer when shopping for clothes? It is like what I am being sold is not for me. I know it sounds silly \" laughs\" it's like I don't belong there when I'm in the store looking for women's clothing. I feel like I am intruding. TRANZLOOK 37

They make me feel like I am in the wrong body and I feel like I shouldn't be wearing them. What would you like to see future fashion brands do for you in terms of fashionable clothing and sizing issues? I think that they should be making clothing more suitable for trans people. Stores should be made more welcoming for trans people, and that clothing shouldn't be tied to your gender. They should be suitable for everyone no matter what gender you Idetitfy with. Would you use a virtual fitting room if there was a store designed exclusively for you? I don't really know what that is, but possibly. It depends what it does and how comfortable it makes me feel. Has your height effected your clothing options? No I would say not that much I am quite short so it has not been that much of a problem. I mainly have issues with fit and looks. TRANZLOOK 41

I don't remember the exact age, but I was quite young. How do clothes make you feel? Wearing the right clothes makes me feel good. If I'm wearing a piece of clothing from a reputable brand I feel like I am a part of that brand. It gives me a sense of importance. How do you feel as a consumer when shopping for clothes? I feel quite normal when shopping for clothing. I just look for what I want and get it. Would you shop in a bricks and mortar shop that was exclusively designed for you? Yes. I'm an outgoing person. I much prefer to go outside for my clothing. I don't like online shopping. You can't see if the clothes you want to buy will fit. As a trans, you have to be wary of clothing types. Not all the clothes you buy will fit you. It can be a right process finding the right clothing sometimes. That's where changing rooms help so much and you can only find them in a bricks and mortar store. TRANZLOOK 45
THE RISE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY OF TRANSGENDER MODELS VALENTINA SAMPAIO In 2017 she became the first openly transgender model to be on the cover of Vogue Pars, also appearing on the covers of Brazilian Vogue and German Vogue. 2019 saw her working with Victoria Secret. In 2020 she became the first trans model to appear in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit Issue. 2019 \" Project Runway's\" season welcomed its MIMI TAO first transgender model to the show . Tao born in Thailand and grew up training to be a Buddhist monk, where she started putting on make up and blurring genders. She moved to US where she signed a modelling career. \" I want to change the industry,\" Tao said. \" I want to inspire all transgender young generation who have a dream. Keep knocking the door, if they don't open, the door is going to break one day,\" she said. LEYNA BLOOM Leyna's modelling career began at the same time she came out as trans. In 2014 she graced a candy magazine cover highlighting trans women. She has walked in 2017's New York Fashion Week. In 2021 she made history again when she became the first trans women of colour to model 12 Swimsuits in the pages of Sports Illustrated.

INTERVIEW/USA Your age? 32 To which gender identity do you identify? Transwomen What would you like to see future fashion brands do for you in terms of fashionable clothing and sizing issues? I don't think that they really need to do anything. They should just treat you as the gender that you identify with. There does not need to be focus on trans people. I don't want to feel like I am different. I want to feel like I am a women. What style of clothing do you currently wear? I primarily go for luxury and high-quality clothing. I don't like wearing cheap clothes as I often find that they are poorly made. Wear do you currently shop for your clothes? Prada, Armani, Burberry and Dior If there was a shop for you what would you like to see featured there? I would like to see somewhere to sit, eat and drink. Toilets and fitting rooms. Would you use a virtual fitting room if there was a store designed exclusively for you? Most likely no. I don't think that they work as well as actual physical fitting rooms that you can go to. This is because virtual fitting rooms maybe using some predetermined computerized model to fit the clothes onto. It won't be tuned to your own body type. TRANZLOOK 49
