WorkShop Grades X - XII Workshop/Seminar Title: concept of pi Resource Person: Dr Diwakaran PROFILE OF THE RESOURCE PERSON: He has done his PhD in philosophy and mathematics from Indian institute of science. Currently, he is a professor in Azim Premji University. The virtual session commenced with a brief introduction of Dr Diwakaran by Swapna Aggarwal. Firstly, Dr Diwakaran threw a question to students to have an open discussion on, ‘what do you know about The enthusiastic students started to share their knowledge and definition of .Various questions come in our mind regarding the concept of like, How did people discover’ this? and how can we convince ourselves about it ? To throw more light on this concept, he started with an experiment by drawing a circle using a compass. He explained that if we take one piece of string and place it on top of the circle, exactly once around. Then straighten out the string; its length will be the circumference of the circle. We can measure the circumference with a ruler/vernier calliper. If we divide the circumference of the circle by the diameter, we will get a approximately 3.14—no matter what size circle we drew! He further supplemented the inquisitiveness of the learners by introducing Archimedes’ method using Geo-Gebra to get value of pi more precisely. Our students were patiently listening and learning the concept. Consistently, chat box was flooded with so many responses and queries of spontaneous learners. The whole workshop was enriching and interesting. Open discussion amongst students and resource person was very fruitful and resulted in depth knowledge of the concept.
