Direction of LIGHT In this set of images, there is experimentation with direction of light. The light source is kept in seven different directions i.e 450 left and right, 900 left and right, 1350 left and right and on camera. All the portraits are captured with single light source. LIGHTING PAT T E R N S FLAT LIGHT In flat light you have your light source facing directly at the front of your subject from the angle of the lens. In this lighting pattern minimum shadows are kept. For this image there are two sources of light i.e key light from the right side, and fill light light from the left side, from the angle of camera. F/11 1/200 ISO 100 Canon 7D 16

BROAD LIGHTING Broad lighting is a portrait lighting pattern where the portion of the subject’s face that is turned toward the camera is lit most bright. For this image two lights were used. One is the key light from right side of camera and the other one is background light, which is placed behind the subject. F/11 1/200 ISO 160 Canon 7D 19

SHORT LIGHTING Short lighting is a portrait lighting pattern where the portion of the subject’s face that is turned away from the camera is lit most bright. This lets light fall on the narrow side of the face leaving a shadow on the broad side of the face, which is facing the camera. For this image the key light is approx. 1350 left from the camera and a reflector is used on the right side of camera. F/10 1/200 ISO 160 Canon 7D 20

21

22

RIM LIGHTING Rim lighting pattern is when the key light is behind the subject, so that half of the face’s edge is lit, leaving rest of the face in shadows. For this image the key light is approx. 1600 right from the angle of the camera, and a black paper is used on the left side to absorb the light. F/10 1/200 ISO 100 Canon 7D 23

BACKLIGHT LIGHTING 24

Backlight lighting is when the key light is behind the subject. For this image, two lights are placed behind the subject. F/16 1/250 ISO 100 Canon 7D 25

B U T T E R F LY LIGHTING Butterfly lighting is when the light is front of subject with 70 degree top angle from the lens. This light is recognised with the butterfly like shaped shadow under the nose. For this image the key light is placed in front of the camera. F/9 1/200 ISO 100 Canon 7D 26

27

28

LOOP LIGHTING Loop lighting is a portrait lighting pattern where the subject is lit from about 45 degrees in front of them and above. This creates a nose shadow that ‘loops’ down at an angle onto their cheek. For this image the key light is placed 450 left from the camera. F/9 1/200 ISO 100 Canon 7D 29

LOW KEY Low key photography is when you get a grey scale of 6-9, meaning the majority of your image is dark. For this image the key light is placed 450 left from the camera, with a artificial net in between. F/7.1 1/250 ISO 100 Canon 7D 30

31

32

HIGH KEY High key photography is when you get a grey scale of 1-4, meaning the majority of your image is bright. For this image butterfly light is used along with reflectors. F/9 1/200 ISO 100 Canon 7D 33

CONTRAST Contrast in photography is the visual ratio of different tones in an image. High contrast means the images has both low key and high key areas. For this image the key light is placed 900 left, with black paper 900 right from the camera. F/6.3 1/200 ISO 100 Canon 7D 34

35

36

S AT U R AT I O N Saturation refers to the intensity of a color. The higher the saturation of a color, the more vivid it is. The lower the saturation of a color, the closer it is to gray. For this image the key light is placed 450 left from the angle of camera. F/9 1/200 ISO 100 Canon 7D 37
