Even though it was slow to come, it is here now, and this year looks to be a very strong year in construction again across all segments. Collectively, that makes it so important to Remember, we are the lead the conversation with young people we ambassadors for our trades to know about the opportunity existing within the plumbing and HVAC trades. More and the people around you. more people are coming to that conclusion as they look at paying off worthless college debt. If they would have entered the trades, none of those debts would have accrued. Each one of us who makes a good living within this industry needs to be the spokesperson for all of the great career opportunities that exist within it. I have had good luck hiring people that want to change industries completely. They are often late 20s or into their 30s and have come to realize that their first career choice was not the best. When they see the opportunities in our trades, the conversion has been pretty easy. Remember, we are the ambassadors for our trades to the people around you. Make sure you use the opportunity to recruit new people. Our entire industry will continue to need good, new people coming in. Please help! Wishing you and yours a very safe and prosperous summer season! www.mnphcc.com | MN PHCC | May-June 2022 5

FEATURE KEEP COLD WINDS AT BAY: ELIMINATING DRAFTS AND COOL AIR IN HEATED SPACES By Andrew Martin, Senior Product Manager with Marley Engineered Products In facilities with high volumes of foot traffic, the constant opening and closing of doors not only lets in chilly air but can cause heating problems for the entire building. FEATURE WAYS COVID CHANGED IMPRESSIONS OF PUBLIC RESTROOMS AND FACILITIES Upon entering the third year of the pandemic, Americans are not only more sensitive to germs in public restrooms, they now hold higher standards for the cleanliness, condition and technology used in these shared spaces, according to the annual Healthy Handwashing Survey™ from Bradley Corporation conducted in January. Despite ongoing COVID outbreaks, most Americans have not been deterred from using public bathrooms. In fact, 41% of Americans report using public restrooms as often as they did before COVID came on the scene. Interestingly, 27% say they use them more now than previously. “Thanks to the pandemic, more people are paying closer attention to various elements in public restrooms — how clean they are, how easy they are to navigate without touching surfaces and how they can be improved,” said Jon Dommisse, vice president of marketing and corporate communication for Bradley Corp. The survey, which has examined the state of U.S. public restrooms and handwashing habits for 13 years, identified key COVID impacts on how Americans view public restrooms — as well as the businesses and establishments that provide them. #1 Restroom maintenance gets higher marks A positive side effect of the virus is that half of the population believes public restrooms are now cleaner and in better condition than before COVID. More men (55%) give a thumbs up to the cleanliness of restrooms compared with women (47%). “Prior to COVID, upwards of 70% of Americans reported having an unpleasant restroom experience,” Dommisse explained. “Evidently, increased cleaning protocols and stocking of supplies is being observed and appreciated by restroom users.” Further, 79% think a posted and updated cleaning schedule in a restroom is important. “Signage goes a long way in helping to reassure visitors the facility is taking steps to ensure a clean environment and cares about keeping them safe,” he said. 18 May-June 2022 | MN PHCC | www.mnphcc.com

Respondents also report that encountering neglected restrooms lowers their opinion of the establishment (43%) and shows the business doesn’t care about its customers (38%). #3 Americans place high value on touchless restrooms 84% of Americans believe it’s important for public restrooms to Now In Inventory! INDUSTRY NEWS UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE AND FRONTLINE WORKER BILL SIGNED INTO LAW BY GOV. TIM WALZ On April 29, Governor Walz signed the Unemployment Insurance (UI) and Frontline Worker bill into law. Replenishing the UI Trust Fund at $2.73 billion will ensure UI benefits are available to workers in the future and that businesses across the state are held harmless from the effects of the pandemic. About 130,000 businesses will receive UI tax relief with the passing of this bill – with the total amount of relief provided to businesses coming totaling around $200 million for the first quarter of 2022. Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) Commissioner Steve Grove joined Governor Tim Walz, legislators, and small business owners at an event at the State Capitol to celebrate passing the bill into law. “Minnesota businesses, especially small businesses and their workers, were deeply impacted by COVID-19,” said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove. “This investment means we won’t have to raise future UI tax rates right at this critical moment of expansion for Minnesota’s economy. Avoiding higher tax payments means more money for business owners to put toward salaries, benefits and capital expenses.” DEED will now begin calculating revisions to the amounts that over 130,000 employers owe in UI taxes. To learn more about how this works and what to expect, DEED has published an FAQ to help businesses. This law also provides $500 million for Frontline Worker Pay, which will provide bonus pay to frontline workers who have sacrificed during the pandemic to keep Minnesotans safe, healthy, fed, and cared for. Eligible workers include those from the health care, child care, school, food service, public transit, long- term care, building service, emergency response, retail, and manufacturing sectors. Currently, the UI Trust Fund owes approximately $1.4 billion to the U.S. Treasury Department. This one-time investment of $2.73 billion will allow the State of Minnesota to repay its negative balance to the U.S. Treasury Department and bring the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund to a balance of positive $1.3 billion. In the days and weeks ahead, the UI program will recalculate employer taxes due and provide information on tax account credits. Minnesota employers can find more information, including an FAQ, at Unemployment tax changes: How they affect you/Employers - Unemployment Insurance Minnesota (mn.gov). www.mnphcc.com | MN PHCC | May-June 2022 21

INDUSTRY NEWS REVIEWING THE OSHA TOP 10 SAFETY VIOLATIONS Safety violations can occur in any number of ways, but there are plenty of opportunities to help create safer work environments. One way is to become familiar with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Top 10 list, which accounts for the most frequently cited standards following inspections of businesses and work sites by federal OSHA.1 This helpful list can be used as a guide to learning what common risks to watch out for, and accessing vital information to help avoid devastating — and costly — worker injuries or fatalities.    Each year, OSHA posts their Top 10 violations after the month of April to allow the prior fiscal year’s inspection data to finalize.1 For the 2020 fiscal year, the Top 10 consisted of: 1.) Fall Protection(C) 2.) Hazard Communication 3.) Respiratory Protection 4.) Scaffolding(C) 5.) Ladders(C) www.iStockphoto.com / Fertnig 6.) Lockout/Tagout 7.) Powered Industrial Trucks 8.) Fall Protection Training Requirements(C) 9.) Eye and Face Protection 10.) Machinery and Machine Guarding OSHA inspections across the nation are completed at both the state and federal levels. In 2021, over 60,000 OSHA inspections occurred, resulting in more than 89,000 violations.2 Knowing that these risks exist — and that there are plenty of resources to help mitigate them — what will you do for your business to avoid becoming a part of this statistic? Consider your specific business and workplace. Depending on the type of work that is done there, one or more of these safety risks may be present. Have you read the applicable standards? Written safety programs and regular training are great ways to help engage your employees in safer work habits. Post clear signage with workplace safety reminders and verify that all employees are using the proper equipment and attire for their jobs. This includes ensuring that employees have access to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), maintaining equipment and machinery, and verifying that your workplace is operating at a high standard of safety and functionality so your employees are comfortable and confident in their ability to complete their work. INDUSTRY NEWS BRADFORD WHITE EXPANDS SUPPORT OF TRADE www.iStockphoto.com / BartCo OPPORTUNITIES WITH INDUSTRY FORWARD™ Bradford White recently announced the launch of Industry Forward™, a charitable giving initiative that will provide funding for strategic industry workforce development training programs and increase public awareness of the importance and value of the plumbing and HVAC industry and the many career opportunities that it offers. “Industry Forward is a critical investment in the awareness, education and training our industry needs to address the chronic workforce gap we’re facing,” said Carl Pinto Jr., senior director of marketing communications for Bradford White. “The traditional skilled trades in the plumbing and HVAC industry offer a range of career opportunities, but many people overlook these paths because of the mistaken perception that manufacturing and residential and commercial service jobs aren’t viable long-term options. As the country continues to face hiring shortages and teens and adults alike seek opportunities to find rewarding work that aligns with their interests and ambitions, Industry Forward provides a pathway by supporting trade schools and other organizations that are promoting plumbing and HVAC industry career options.”  accurate | easy to learn | fast MidwMeisdtwSeaslteSs a&leM and 553300PPPP:5rM:o3r8og0i80gdrP00ePrw0e-s:WrE2e-ssoE284smsgeD406mtrbDa60e-rSWsa8ii-r-svli8i:aE2i4tsvelee:4l44me,ieb:Dn460,iHssanf0-rwHoi8iaift&vloe@w:aF4re@t:Fr4:wlM,itamn:0lw Website: www.m mechanical . sheet metal . plumbing 800-246-8440 • mwsmrep.com MPPMPPeraierrancisrncDcsoPMPDcioonpieroannpinarnncanaisleaDsnclleodlsl:i:odlR,Mnp::WRn,KMBnaeaMKBelepearsliIeprdvlatrtn:i,:tvteRtir,tntMtAeiuRsKMBneARsyMeofeprayMelNnioaidvtrotlnntidtteioacnongi,tAaRsnomgnit,UnmyMengo,euGelgneidGyeoPrntre5ty,ahrotgieae3r,hnBmenoaa,rn0BregaienlGdelfPdMPillydLldMrt:lePMKr,BahMioaPKrBaa8Banneuagniaan0nutIudirrledildMn0etk,feulrwfiik-feshlaNPKfBai,RE2Behslaac,aa4nBAmsuarcDrDetAn6tututrrnurtia,k-urfetpnmuSfn,r8ii,iAhvlalmner:,ae4SrBAmeacleerlA4yme,ierDlrRtrnyu0suitnHusRsn,ufsanoimo,nrnaeAano&dd@eWeNFrFmddlnatWrFy:lMuaamRmIuEstiu,l8nmIanlanowa,leeM0drladdeeMrskWrt0,F,N,armren-Wiu,N,B2KmIot,r,dlBiK4I,lerneUeneMi6rpeUtgv5riIPrt-t.v,Nai,,63APctnaiBInK40oon,nnSo62myrfeUcSiy49fetvM.HPtelMaiHfnaIlonof,aInorS,yNfnssrNesMs,HeDl,eDAnfa,IoAn,,n,nSr,NnJdSssDJdi,yeDlDil,yAln,lSJ,N,nSJSoNhEJdohhDiEilyhlintall,,ntsaSJ,nNSsonoShdotEnheditnl,eIntp Website: www.mwsmrep.com PMPerairncsDcoionpnnaalesldl::R, KMBeepraivtrttteinARsyMeolnidontaoginmn,geGeyr5t5e,h3a3rBea00nilPdPldPMPl::rPrKBaMMoo88aangguii00nddtrruri0e0ekfewWwWfi-s-shlaE2E2,eessBeeac44msmAsbbDrDrt66ttutsnsuaa-r,-rSSimi8ii8niitrtvlvAlee:a:e4a4eeem::ll4lr4y,i,eienRn00uwswHHissffnanooowwaa&&@dd@FFrWrwFwtta::lMlMua.ma.mmImm,8nl8naalwwe0wdeM0wdrrsksk0,r0,rss,mNm,ee-W-Wmm22BtKt,rrii44rIrIeennreUee66ippggt55vpp-P-t..,36,ai36.c.cnccI04Io04ononono26m26mSymfcmc9494e..MHlfaIo,nrNss,eDAn, ,nSJdDiyll, Johnson, Joe Knopik, Steve Shilt, Stephanie Tesch NE and IA MPPPMPereraaiirrnnccssDDccooiioonpnpnnnanaaalleessllddll::::,, MKMKBBeerraaiivvttttttttiinnAARRyMyMoollididoonnaaooggmmnn,, eeGGeeyyrree,,aarrBBaanniillddllddll PPKKBBaaaauunnttrriikkfefeiihhll,,BBaaAArrrruuttnn,,mmnnAAeemmllyyRRuussanoanoddddFFaauummlllleeeerrrr,,,, BBKKrreeiittvvttaiainnnnSSyyeeHHllffaaoonnrrssss,,eeAAnn,,nnJJddiiyyllll SSJJoohhhhiillntnt,,ssSSoottnnee,,ppJJhhooaaeenniiKKeennTTooeeppssiikkcc,,hhSStteevvee RReepprreesseennttiinngg tthhee MMaannuuffaaccttuurreerr iinn WWII,, MMNN,, UUPP ooff MMII,, NNDD,, SSDD,, NNEE aanndd IIAA BID MORE.
