guide to levels There are many ways to study for higher qualifications and if you want to further your education it doesn’t have to be at a University. City College offer a range of Higher Education qualifications, which are detailed below. Level 6 – Honours Degree An Honours Degree generally involves studying for 3 or 4 years. Some degree courses include a year for work experience. You can top up a HND qualification to an Honours Degree which takes one year full-time or one and a half years part-time. Level 5 – FOUNDATION Degree A Foundation Degree combines academic and vocational study related to the specific subject you are studying. They are designed in partnership with employers and universities, providing you with the relevant skills, ability and knowledge. Completing a Foundation Degree will give you a strong academic qualification as well as practical experience to enter employment or further studies. Level 5 – Higher National Diploma (HND) The HND is a nationally recognised qualification that is usually vocationally based and is equivalent to the first two years at university. Studying for a HND will include a variety of theory and practical work and can lead you directly into employment or into the final year of a full-time honours degree. Level 4 – Higher National Certificate (HNC) The HNC is often over one or two years with part-time options available. It is a vocationally based qualification that is equivalent to the first year of university. Once completed you could progress onto a relevant Foundation Degree, HND or second year of a Degree.
