CIC CENSOR-IN-CHIEF DR WARREN SHNIDER Since the last newsletter, the Education Governance Working Party have met on several occasions and are making steady progress with the task of education review. An interim report will be presented to Council at the July meeting. At the February 2017 Meeting of Council, it was decided that the College needs to enhance its engagement with dental students. The initial work was done by Ms Maryann Walsh, Executive Assistant to the CEO, who established contact with the dental student societies in Australasia and South-East Asia, recording information about the student executives, membership and contact details of the Presidents/ Chairs. Following on from this, the Director of Education, Mr Hal Aamot met with the President of The Australian Dental Students Association (ADSA), Ms Nicole Contemplacion at the College Office. The ADSA is the only association representing Australian dental, hygiene and oral health students from the 13 universities with 3500 members. On the 4th July, I had an invitation to present to the delegates at the 2017 ADSA Conference at the University of Sydney. This engagement will be developed further and a report presented to Council at the November meeting as part of the overall 2017-2020 Strategic Plan. REGIONAL REPORTS WESTERN AUSTRALIA The WA Regional Committee have been primarily occupied with delivering the Regional Scientific Meeting which took place on Friday 23 June at the Hyatt Hotel, Perth. The theme of the meeting was Treatment of the Compromised Dentition…Management or Supervised Neglect? The Committee were lucky enough to secure the ever-in-demand and entertaining Prof Ian Meyers as headline speaker for the meeting. Prof Meyers most definitely lived up to his reputation, giving well thought-out, patient-centred presentations relevant to the theme. Prof Meyer’s topics included: • “Restoration of the Compromised Tooth – From Eruption to Destruction.” • “Restorative Management of the Ageing Patient and the Ageing Dentition.” • “Update on Adhesive Dentistry – The Aim is Bond…Adhesive Bond.” • “Optimising the Use of Glass-Ionomer Cements.” Prof Meyer’s innovative approach and lateral thinking challenged all delegates to examine how they view problems associated with the compromised dentition and consider multiple factors when providing solutions. Prof Meyers was most ably supported by Dr Janina Christoforou and Dr Ahmed Saleh who lectured on Oral Medicine and Periodontics respectively. Among other things, Dr Christoforou highlighted the growing problem of sports drink consumption, the “WA Meth Epidemic”, xerostomia and polypharmacy. Dr Saleh questioned whether we are prematurely extracting periodontally compromised teeth and presented some compelling research that may prompt us to give even teeth with a hopeless prognosis a stay of execution. Ninety-nine delegates including 47 final year dental students were treated to an outstanding quality of presentation from all three speakers in both style and content. It was attended also by examiners who facilitated small group activities and delivered plenary style lectures, as well as Regional Committee Student Advisors. This intensive course provided candidates FEW Examiners 2017 with the opportunity to participate in interactive sessions which have been modelled on the format of the Final Examination. Candidates having dinner FEW Review In the seven years post-graduation from dental school, I have become increasingly convinced of my need to structure my professional development and set goals for my personal learning. To this end, I recently made the decision to sit the Final Examinations of the College for Fellowship in early 2018. This was a decision made with some trepidation. Not only am I presenting as possibly the only candidate from Tasmania, but I also have a young family and I had only a vague idea what these examinations would demand from me. Attending the FEW has proven invaluable in setting the foundations for my study. I've gained confidence that my clinical experience thus far will help me at every stage, and I've made new friends to collaborate and study with. I now appreciate that the goal of achieving Fellowship is to have a firm evidence base for my clinical practice, the skills to maintain this throughout my career, and to demonstrate my ability as a proficient, ethical and moral dentist. Most importantly, I've become excited about what I'm going to learn in the months of preparation ahead. I'd like to extend my thanks to the organisers of the workshop and to Dr Caitlin Hurley all the Fellows and Members who gave their time to attend. Their enthusiasm in the pursuit (Tasmania) of excellence was contagious! 18 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 02 2017

College Fellow helps to put a smile on the face of a Cambodian farmer Eng Kheng is a hardworking labourer on a farm in a village in Kampong Cham about 3 hours from Phnom Penh. Doctors sent photos of him to Dr Andrew Cheng in Adelaide, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in the hope that something could be done to treat Eng Kheng’s rare hereditary condition where his gingiva keeps multiplying. Dr Cheng and colleagues, Cathy and Louise Byrne from Walk on Water fundraising group Adelaide travelled to Cambodia for a surgical trip, visiting the Military Hospital, Phnom Penh with Dr Nous Sarom. Eng Kheng had never left his village and lived a very simple life, shying away from people who didn't know him who would be shocked at his appearance. He travelled to the big city of Phnom Penh to be with his brother, who also suffered the same condition, to a lesser degree and was operated on at the Military Hospital with the Adelaide and Cambodian surgeons. Eng patiently slept on the hospital floor for five days waiting for the team to escort him back to Australia for his pending surgery at the Ashford Hospital. On arrival to Adelaide the Walk on Water team had arranged Khmer speaking friends to meet and greet and escort him to Wat Khmer Santipheak temple with the monks where he would reside for the next month for post operative care with a roster of carers from Walk on Water and the dedicated Khmer community in Adelaide. Surgery performed by Dr Andrew Cheng, Dr Paul Duke and assistants was more than the usual eight hour day. Four days later, Eng was discharged from hospital and returned to the temple for post operative care by the Khmer community. A short time later and following post operative appointments with Drs Cheng and Duke and a prosthetist, Peter Knowles, a new custom made prosthetics was fitted. This ensured Eng’s denture was as comfortable as possible after the major resection of his mouth. Thanks are extended to many who made the surgery possible; the Ashford hospital, Paul Evans for the sponsored hospital stay and empathic care, the assisting nurses who came in on their days off for theatre and Dr Devonish (anaesthetist). Without the amazing skills of Dr Andrew Cheng and Dr Paul Duke, this surgery would not have been possible. THE COLLEGE REMEMBERS... The College Remembers Emeritus Professor Mark Jolly AM DDSc (Sydney) FRACDS 9th September 1923 - 10th May 2017 It is with great sadness that the President and Council note the passing of one of its outstanding Fellows, Emeritus Prof Mark Jolly. The College has received several tributes from Fellows and Members on the extraordinary national and international contribution Emeritus Prof Mark Jolly made to dental education, patient care, the dental profession, the College and to inspiring others. The College pays tribute to Prof Jolly and offers its sincere condolences to his family. Two Eulogies to Prof Jolly have been included; one by his daughters, Suzanne Lewis and Roslyn Jolly, and the other by Prof Robert Mitchell. Prof John EdeB Norman has kindly provided the photograph of Prof Jolly, Mr Derek Henderson and himself at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, North Sydney in 1978. The 1949 University of Sydney Faculty of Dentistry yearbook for graduating students includes the following entry for Mark Jolly: “Mark can be envied for his precision, be the problem a gold foil or the knot in his tie. The owner of an immaculate prosthetics kit, he is always ‘steaming’ someplace – to a patient, a lecture or to Saturday tennis.” 50 years later, in 1999, Prof Mark Jolly received the Award of Merit of the Sydney University Dental Alumni Society at the reunion of the 1949 graduating year. His acceptance speech notes include the following: “We, of 1949 received a wonderful training … and that training admitted us to a fine profession and that, in turn, gave us a trusted and honourable place in our community, and we have enjoyed these benefits for a full 50 years. Half a century!” Mark grew up in Guildford, Sydney and attended Parramatta High School and the University of Sydney. He attained the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1949, Master of Dental Surgery in 1953 and Doctor of Dental Science in 1965. He was admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in 1965, and in the same year was appointed McCaughey Professor of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery, the University of Sydney. In 1982 he was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia for services to dentistry. As well as his significant achievements as a researcher, teacher and administrator, Mark was a mentor to colleagues and, above all, dedicated to providing the best possible care for his patients. His former student and colleague, Dr Robert Mitchell, writes “Prof Jolly was a fine, decent and Christian man who treated all around him with equal respect and this was especially true of his patients who all held him in the highest regard. He was also revered by his colleagues across all fields of dentistry and medicine.” Mark married Adrienne Pamela Hill (always known as Pam) in 1957, and they had two daughters, Suzanne and Roslyn. Sabbaticals took them first to Chicago and London, then several times to the Welsh National School of Medicine and Dentistry in Cardiff, Wales. Mark loved gardening and built the garden at the family home in Roseville from scratch. He was also an avid antiques collector. In the last few years of their 47-year marriage Mark cared for Pam who developed Alzheimer’s Disease and died in 2004. Emeritus Prof Mark Jolly, AM, passed away peacefully at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney on 10 May 2017, at the age of 93. He is survived by his daughters Suzanne and Roslyn, their husbands Peter and Simon, and three granddaughters – Stephanie, Christina and Alice. Robert Donald Mitchell remembers.... I first formally met the man in his office on the 6th floor of the United Dental Hospital in early 1978 soon after my graduation. I had applied for a position as a Tutor in his Department. He was the Professor of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery - a person not to be taken lightly - and I clearly remember what I was wearing for the interview. His secretary, Ms Judith Barter, looked me up and down and advised me, just before I entered his office, that Prof Jolly favoured a more conservative approach to one's attire, so I felt a little on the back foot so to speak. Despite this initial flaw in my character, Prof Jolly - who of course always wore a beautifully starched white clinical coat - saw my better traits and thankfully offered me the position as Tutor. It was quite the most significant day of my professional life. If it was not for Prof Jolly seeing beyond the superficial and perhaps unsuitable couture, then I would not be where I am today. My time as a Tutor in Prof Jolly's department was joyful and educative and I look back on those times with great fondness. I met many fine professionals with whom I am still friends to this day. Prof Jolly taught me the finer art of taking a history from a patient and always advised me to listen for the \"incongruity\" in the patient's story - something that I still do to this day. He also taught me to be sympathetic and personable to the patients and to treat them with the utmost respect and to remind myself of how I would like to be treated. I only ever had one run-in with Prof Jolly and that occurred as a result of myself and another Tutor taking it upon ourselves to treat a surgical patient with intravenous sedation without first seeking the permission of a senior staff member. As a result, the colleague and I were \"marched\" into the Professorial office and given a right dressing down - the only time I think I ever heard him raise his voice in anger. I can still hear his words booming from across the desk: \"Mitchell, as a surgeon you are first class, but as a human being you are a failure!\". I subsequently wrote those words on a piece of paper and adhered it to the wall above my desk, where it remained until I left the Department in 1986, and as was to be expected, I learnt how to be a human being. As stated above, I gained much from this wonderful gentleman but it was his foresight in allowing me to assist Dr (as he was then) The College Remembers John Norman at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. Over the years I had multiple reasons to seek Prof Jolly's advice on a wide range of matters both professional and personal and he always gave me his time willingly and most importantly offered me wise counsel which most times I took. I never once had reason to address him by his Christian name, he was and always will be Prof Jolly to me - such is the high regard in which I hold him. And this regard I revere him as one of the three men who have influenced my life the most. Prof Jolly was a fine, decent and Christian man who treated all around him with equal respect and this was especially true of his patients who all held him in the highest regard. He was also revered by his colleagues across all fields of dentistry and medicine. I believe, sadly, that in my profession we shall not see his like again, but I rejoice in the fact that I knew him and remember him fondly as my teacher, mentor, colleague and friend.
