THE COLLEGE REMEMBERS ... In 1975 Professor Sutherland addressed the Dental Study Group of Western Australia, of which he was Patron, thus: “We are all dentists and none of us – specialists or generalists can properly practise our profession in isolation… [we] must have an up-to-date knowledge of each other’s fields, and one of the finest ways of achieving this is through membership of a Study Group such as yours which consists of specialists and generalists, all actively contributing their knowledge for each other’s benefit.” This philosophy is equally true for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. College Councils past and present and Fellows of the College gratefully acknowledge the enormous contribution and support of Professor Kenneth Sutherland, AM. He will be sadly missed by all.EMERITUS PROFESSOR KENNETH JOSEPHGEORGE SUTHERLAND, AM1917 - 2014It is with much sadness that we report the passing ofEmeritus Professor Kenneth JG Sutherland, AM.Professor Sutherland was an inaugural Fellow of the RoyalAustralasian College of Dental Surgeons, being admitted toFellowship in 1966.Professor Sutherland was an Examiner for the College for 15 PROFESSOR RICHARD (DICK) MANNING KINGyears from 1969 to 1983 acting as the co-ordinating examiner 1924 – 2013and Chief Examiner in General Dentistry, Part 1 of the FinalFellowship examination. Professor Sutherland’s contribution, Richard graduated BDS (New Zealand) in 1948. He wasin establishing the format and setting standards for the Final appointed to the staff in the University of Otago FacultyExamination working with successive Registrars, was greatly of Dentistry in 1949 as Assistant Lecturer. Healso contributed his time to the Crippled Children’s Society,now CCS. Jules made an indelible mark on us all and showed the true spirit of Collegiality of Academic endeavour. His research brought fairness and equity to thousands if not millions of people while his teaching was something we all aspire to - caring, compassionate and knowledgeable and importantly, fun.
