PRESENTING SPONSOR WELCOME LETTER “It took me quite a long time to develop a voice, and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent.” — Madeleine Albright I am delighted to welcome you to this 15th annual Massachusetts Conference for Women. Each year this very special event breaks new ground – and the 2019 conference will be no exception. With a record number of people in attendance and an incredible lineup of speakers, I am confident that together we are making a powerful statement about the impact and value of women in business and way beyond. State Street believes so strongly in this conference that for the 13th consecutive year we are proud to be the presenting sponsor. This commitment reflects our long held belief that inclusion and diversity drive better outcomes for our business, our employees, our clients, and our communities. While we can all agree that there has been meaningful progress toward achieving true gender equity, we can also agree that there is much more work to be done. This is why your being here today is so important. I hope you use your time to explore different perspectives and gain new insights and connections. Then tomorrow, go back to your workplaces, colleagues, families and friends and put what you have experienced or learned into action. When we empower ourselves, we are better able to help other women find their strengths and voices. Together we can be an unstoppable force for change. That starts here, today. Kathy Horgan, Executive Vice President & Chief Human Resources and Citizenship Officer, State Street Corporation 4 MACONFERENCEFORWOMEN.ORG

CONFERENCE BOARD WELCOME December 12, 2019 Dear friends and colleagues, We are thrilled to welcome you to the 2019 Massachusetts Conference for Women! Since 2005, some of the nation’s most inspiring leaders have taken to this main stage to share their stories and their wisdom, and hundreds of top experts have come to share their expertise. We are immensely grateful to every one of them. But this year, we would like to express our special thanks to you—the women and men of Massachusetts—for making this ex- traordinary community what it is. At a time of heightened polarization in America, we come together today as nearly 12,000 women and men of all ages, races, and ethnicities united by two common goals: to become our best selves and to advance women in the workplace. Doing so, we know, will strengthen our workplaces, our families, and our larger community. We have designed this day to be highly informative and inspiring, and hope you will consider sharing what you learn with others. We also invite you to stay connected and inspired year-round by signing up for our newsletter, engaging on our social media channels, and subscribing to our new podcast, Women Amplified. With thanks to our sponsors who make all this possible, we wish you an extraordinary day! Warmly, The Massachusetts Conference for Women Board of Directors P.S. Her vision of a more equitable world means that every girl will have the opportunity to learn and lead. Malala Fund invests in local education activists; advocates for policy changes and resources needed to give all girls a secondary education; and amplifies girls’ voices through its digital publication Assembly. Inspired by her father’s activism, Yousafzai began her campaign for girls’ education at age eleven with her anonymous blog for the BBC, Diary of a Pakistani Schoolgirl. She soon began advocating publicly for girls’ education and often joined her father on visits to neighboring villages to recruit for the school he founded in their rural home. Independently, she began attracting international media attention and awards. Due to Yousafzai’s increased prominence, at age fifteen she was attacked by the Taliban for speaking out. She recovered in the United Kingdom and has continued her fight for girls ever since. Yousafzai is the author of three books, I Am Malala, Malala’s Magic Pencil, and We Are Displaced. She is currently completing her undergraduate degree at Oxford University, with a focus on philosophy, politics, and economics. @malala @malalafund TARA WESTOVER is an American historian and writer known for her unique and courageous education journey. CAREER PAVILION LOCATED IN THE EXHIBIT HALL • OPEN ALL DAY SPONSORED BY MFS and the Massachusetts Conference for Women are thrilled to offer this year’s Career Pavilion. Join us for intimate and unique opportunities to best position yourself on the job, enhance your career skills, and network with peers. Don’t miss out on these offerings! LEARNING BURSTS 12:30 - 1:00 PM BEST PRACTICES FOR RISING WOMEN LEADERS IN STEM Presented by MIT Lincoln Laboratory As women in STEM, we are accustomed to working harder to make our contributions known, making sure we are always presenting our best efforts. One of the most difficult transitions we face when we become managers is that the work we are representing is no longer our own. This drives a great deal of anxiety about the performance of our teams, all while we continue to try to distinguish ourselves amongst our leadership peers. These forces create a cycle that often engenders the same toxic environments we sought to correct. In this learning burst, Dr. Bonita Burke discusses the core discipline of self-reflection, why this trait is particularly crucial for female managers in STEM, and provides tips for creating a working environment where we can all thrive. BONITA BURKE, PhD, assistant leader, counter-weapons of mass destruction group, MIT Lincoln Laboratory @mitll 3:00 – 4:00 PM THIS 20 MIN. THE RELATIONSHIP GAME: CULTIVATING AUTHENTIC RELATIONSHIPS TO CLIMB THE LADDER LEARNING Led by international speaker and chief brand strategist Alechia Reese, the Relationship Game BURST WILL focuses on the practical tips, tools, and resources required to build relationships that lead to career growth and acceleration. Every opportunity begins with connection. This session BE REPEATED empowers leaders at all levels with the confidence to build relationships, the mindset to 3X grow them, and the creative strategy to leverage personal value for professional growth. ALECHIA REESE, creative brand strategist & chief brand architect, 360 Gateway Brands and author, Eating Elephants @alechiareese COACHES CORNER 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM * The Coaches Corner is the place where Conference attendees receive one-on-one “laser coaching” with a professional certified coach from the International Coach Federation (ICF) New England Charter Chapter. This is a valuable opportunity to take what you learn at the Conference and translate it into action to take your career to the next level. ICF credentialed coaches will support your goals to advance your career and help you plan your next step by exploring topics relevant to your situation, which may include: • Clarifying your professional goals • Prioritizing and balancing your life • Navigating career transitions • Negotiating a raise • Asking for that promotion • Launching a new career or job search • Seeking and attaining board positions • And much more! It’s helpful to have a topic in mind to discuss with your coach, but if you’re feeling overwhelmed or not sure where to start, your coach can help with clarity. 34 MACONFERENCEFORWOMEN.ORG
