Note from the authorom the author Note fr \"The zest for learning is inherent in every individual. The Teacher's job is just to bring it out\". This is a quote from Maria Montessori. The text books are only a medium in the process of learning. This book is not intended to be a Bible for the Teacher. It is meant to be a friend and companion of the Student. These books have been designed to give quality education. They are inclusive of English, English Grammar, Mathematics, EVS (Social Studies, Sciences), G.K. and Computers. Prime Years is a set of three term books for Classes 1 to 5. The burden on children's shoulders is reduced as they need not carry books for all subjects. To carry a single book for a term is enough. The essential features of Prime Years series are : v They are graded according to learning levels. v The language is simple and helps in self learning. v Many learning activities are provided. v They strive to fulfill cognitive, effective and psychomotor domains of educational objectives. v The content and style relate learning matter to the real world. The presentation is intended to develop thinking skills and enable the students apply the knowledge in solving problems in practical life situations and not to make the students mere bookworms. Many activities have been given in the Text Book for quicker learning : Question Box tests the knowledge and understanding of the concepts. Think a Little, Write a Little and Reason Out calls for higher order thinking skills. I can do are tasks to apply the concepts in a different situation or extend his/her learning or learn more from experience. The tasks also calls for self expression, imagination and language skills. Guessing Jar provides questions to develop reasoning, logic and critical thinking. Clue Finder calls for higher cognitive skills like application analysis, synthesis and evaluation. In mathematics, the guided problems are for working out with teacher's guidance while Independent practice problems are for students to work out all by themselves. Question Box usually contains problems based on all the concepts learned in the chapter. It is more of a test or assignment. Problems given in the boxes test higher order thinking skills - both critical and lateral thinking. They are mostly challenging questions or fun activities. The hands - on activities help to learn abstract concepts through concrete medium. The learning activities are planned as per the concept of Multiple Intelligence and learning styles. - Rajalaxmi K. Wicked Mr. White Flour Mr. White Flour was back to torment the town of Veggieville. Mr. White Flour was an evil villain. The last time he had attacked Veggieville, he had flooded the town with burgers and fries, and killed most of the vegetables. The children of the town had fallen ill after just eating burgers and fries every day. This time, Mr. White Flour had an even more evil plan. He planned to destroy the fields of vegetables and flood the town with pizzas and burgers. He figured that once the fields of vegetables are destroyed, there would be no vegetables left in the town. 13 Thus, the kids’ parents would be forced to feed them pizzas and burgers every day. As a result, the people of the town would fall ill and he could rule over them.
In order to execute his evil plan, Mr. White Flour reached Veggieville in his specially made aircraft. With him, he had his deadly laser full of harmful pesticides and insecticides. A spray of the laser on vegetable fields would destroy vegetables forever. However, there was a small obstruction to his evil plans. Some mighty vegetables had got to know of his evil plans and were planning to stop him in his tracks. These included the bouncy Broccoli, the mighty red Tomato, the sharp Ladyfinger, and the King Brinjal. They called themselves the gang of four. In order to stop Mr. White Flour, all they had to do was destroy his aircraft. Mr. White Flour’s strength lay in his aircraft. He carried his weapons and all his tools in his mighty aircraft. As Mr. White Flour approached the field of vegetables, the gang of four sprung into action, executing what they had planned. King Brinjal distracted Mr. White Flour with his crazy jokes which no one could ever understand. 14
“When do you know a banana wants to dance?” King Brinjal said. Immediately, he gave the answer, “When you see a banana shake”, and began laughing hysterically. While Mr. White Flour was being distracted by King Brinjal, bouncy Broccoli bounced up and down in front of the aircraft until she could bounce high enough to reach the cockpit. She entered the cockpit, bounced wildly, and shut down the weapon firing system of the aircraft. Now, Mr. White Flour could not fire any of his deadly weapons. The mighty red Tomato splashed itself across the windscreen of the aircraft. The entire windscreen turned bright red, thus blinding Mr. White Flour. Now, he could not see anything too. However, the trump card was the sharp Ladyfinger. The tall and thin Ladyfinger stuck herself in the aircraft’s exhaust. As a result, the aircraft’s engine shut down. Mr. White Flour was flying quite high in the sky. As the aircraft’s engine was shut down, the aircraft came crashing down to earth. As a result, it was broken into pieces, along with the many tools and weapons that it carried. Mr. White Flour was beaten by the residents of Veggieville as he fell down. He had no option but to run away in order to save his life. Thus, Mr. White Flour was defeated and the vegetables were saved, at least for the time being. 15

Hridhan's Dream Hridhan woke up startled. Someone was talking to him. He looked around the room but could not see anyone. It was only after a few seconds that he realized that it was his teddy talking. Yes, the brown, furry teddy bear that he was sleeping with was talking. “Hey buddy, good morning!” said the teddy bear. “Teddy!! What time is it? And how come you are talking? You have never talked before. I have told you so many things, but you have never uttered a word before”, said Hridhan, rubbing his eyes. He was still groggy from his sleep. 17
“Well, I usually prefer listening to people. But I decided to surprise you today, since it is your birthday”, said the teddy bear. “What is the surprise?” Hridhan said. He did not understand what the teddy was saying. “Hello! I am talking. Isn’t that a good enough surprise for you!” the teddy said. “Oh yes, it is a surprise. I am not sure if it is good or bad though. Anyway!” Hridhan replied. “So what is the plan for today?” the teddy asked Hridhan. “I don’t know. I just want to have a lot of fun. It is my birthday”, Hridhan said. “Awesome. That’s exactly what I had in mind”, said the teddy, and he jumped out of the bed. “Where are you going?” “Come, let’s go. We will have a lot of fun. I will make you meet my friends”, the teddy said. With that, Hridhan followed the teddy. Hridhan was still in his night suit, 18 but he was not in a mood to change clothes. They went to the nearby toy store which was full of all kinds of toys.
“Come here. Meet my best friend- the Robo Cop”, Hridhan said, as he went to a corner of the shop. On seeing teddy, Robo Cop came to life. “Hello Hridhan, a very happy birthday to you”, he said. “How do you know it is my birthday?” Hridhan asked, surprised. “I am a cop. I have information on all the kids in this town. Don’t be surprised”, said Robo Cop. “Now, let’s pick up Barbie and Batman, and let’s have some fun”, said teddy. Thus, they went to different parts of the shop. Teddy introduced Hridhan to his other two friends and the five of them made their way out of the store. “So Hridhan, ready for fun!” Barbie said. “Yes, of course! Wow, you guys are so cool”, said Hridhan, excited. “All right then, give them some action Robo Cop and Batman”, said teddy. “As you know Hridhan, we catch the bad guys. Now, will you help us catch the bad guys, just like teddy and Barbie do?” asked Batman. “Of course, I will. This is so exciting”, said Hridhan, beaming with joy. “Ok, let’s go. Let’s catch some bad guys”, Batman and Robo Cop said in unison. With that, they went in pursuit of catching people who commit crimes. As the five of them were roaming the streets, they saw a burglar trying to break into a house. “Look, that burglar is trying to rob that house. We have to stop him”, Robo Cop said. “Alright, teddy and Barbie, you distract him. Kid, you find a phone nearby and call the cops. In the meanwhile, Robo Cop and I will try to stop him”, Batman said. 19
Robo Cop took out his gun while Batman took his gadgets. Teddy and Barbie walked up to the burglar and tapped him on his feet. The burglar felt something and turned around to see what it was. All he could see were two toys lying in the bushes. That momentary distraction gave Robo Cop and Batman an opportunity to stop the criminal. Robo Cop aimed his gun from close range at the leg of the burglar, while Batman used a gadget that could render someone motionless. However, since they were toys, their gadgets could not kill the burglar. Nevertheless, they did prove effective. The bullet and the gadget made the burglar feel itchy in his legs. The itch was so bad that he had to stop what he was doing and instead scratch his leg. He cried out in pain. Meanwhile, Hridhan was able to find a telephone. He got into the telephone booth and dialled the police. The phone rang on the other end. Nobody answered for a long time. After holding on for a good minute or two, finally Hridhan heard someone calling out his name. “Hridhan, Hridhan! Wake up. It is time to go to school.” It was his mom. Hridhan was dreaming. He rubbed his eyes and quickly looked to his right. Teddy was lying by his side, silent as usual. 20
