INTRODUCTION According to the UN International Labour Organization, occupational stress is a \"global epidemic.\" As much as R3 billion a year is being lost in South Africa, due to workplace stress. As much as 60% of lost workdays each year could be attributed to stress. \"Around 80% of visits to health care providers are due to stress-related conditions, like sleep problems, depression and irritability, causing higher health care costs. Stressed employees tend to make mistakes and be less creative too. Absenteeism due to stress has increased dramatically in South Africa. It is estimated that the indirect cost of absenteeism is at least 200 percent of the direct cost of absenteeism at normal absenteeism levels. Absenteeism is costing the South African economy R19-billion annually in direct costs, indirect costs associated with lost productivity run to almost R40-billion per annum. It is important to remember that a demotivated, stressed out employee who is at work would have a similar impact on production levels as someone who is not at work, because they are demotivated and not performing properly in the work environment a condition often referred to as presenteeism. This impacts on the productivity levels of the whole team and the same indirect costs associated with sick absenteeism apply to presenteeism as well. 2.
