Janet Gasper Chowdhury A President unique year where parent-teacher collaboration and hard work of our students have resulted in another successful year of our school. Time for the annual magazine is here again. Academics always being our core objective, our focus is on quality of teaching across the board for good results for all our students and not just focus on a few bright ones. We continued this trend of ours in our online classes too and living our mantra - \"success for every child\". During this pandemic for over a year, we have learnt, modified ourselves and every challenge has brought learning. We have learnt to adjust, cope and deliver an amazing school year with as little difference between online and offline schooling. Nevertheless to say, this would have not been possible without the immense support of our parents. Online teaching was never heard of, but we have innovated and evolved with the situation to deliver our best and everyone has worked really hard and learnt new skills. Teachers have maintained balance in their personal life & work-from-home culture, become much tech savvier, delivered books via Swiggy, created different syllabus structures, innovated CCA activities to keep children involved and also used technology to evaluate and issue report cards. Even our counsellor has evolved her ways to understand students behaviour better via the online mode and kept in constant touch knowing the importance of mental health in this scenario. It gives me pleasure to see how we took every challenge and converted it into opportunity by using a focused and structured plan right from the start. Parents and students were also evolving with the teachers and supporting the school like always. Constant parent-teacher communication and parent’s involvement not only in academics but various CCA activities of school made the journey smooth and enjoyable for all of us. Many parents have appreciated the online classes initiative and our methods of teaching during this pandemic year. We feel immensely proud to give the best to you and are motivated to give the best for upcoming years. Students have not come to the school for a single day this year, but their love for school and teachers and friends is shown in the following pages. They have captured these difficult but unique times like never before through their innovative mind and heart. So let’s read and enjoy the creativity. With warmest wishes 4 St. Augustine’sDay School IMPRESSION

Amitava Chowdhury CEO & Secretary Hello Parents and my dearest students! The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on all of us — our day to day lives and our society .One of the biggest challenges for all of us in this pandemic has been to keep the children engaged and feeling upbeat. Nevertheless, we the St. Augustine’s family worked tirelessly together to manage this unprecedented situation. Teachers and students embraced digital pedagogy with efficacy and promptness that resulted in outstanding success. The seamless sessions of e- classes, assignments,CCA activities like online sports, debate, public speaking and several subject centric workshops, would not have been possible without the judicious use of technology, and the combined efforts and cooperation amongst faculty, students, management and the support of our parents. I am sure that the positive attitude, hard work, sustained efforts and innovative ideas exhibited by our young children in this magazine will surely stir the mind of the readers and take them to the fantastic world of sheer joy and pleasure. “Let us keep alive the child’s inborn sense of wonder, let us arouse their curiosity to discover the mystery of the world we live in!’ With very best wishes St. Augustine’sDay School IMPRESSION 5

Warm greetings to all! Rev. Rodney Borneo Principal As I pen these few lines for our e-magazine my heart is filled with gratitude for the many blessings all of us have received throughout the past year. It is true that the past months have been extremely difficult and there is hardly any who has been left unscathed by the ravages of the pandemic. So I can fully understand if some may find it hard to accept that I would feel, of all things, grateful! Nevertheless, I strongly believe that the choice is ours: to dwell upon the tragedy or to look at the learnings. Here we are, survivors all, and ready as a community to fight back and win. Though social distancing is the norm today, and rightly so, yet there has not been any other event that has brought humanity closer to each other as we are now. So I am grateful…grateful for our school where we have been able to continue the sacred task of education despite the many challenges. Grateful for our dedicated staff members who have chosen to make students their priority and have rendered service before self. Grateful for our parents that they have been able to keep the light of love aflame in each home. Grateful for our young students who have been so resilient throughout this pandemic and are waiting to emerge as the inheritors of the new future. Grateful to God that there is hope yet for each of us. The school e-magazine titled \"Lockdown Diaries 2.0” encapsulates this very sense of hope that our students and staff wish to uphold and celebrate. Like the mythical bird, the PHOENIX, we too shall rise, again and again. The paintings, drawings, poems, articles, etcetera published in this e-magazine are all a testimony to this indomitable spirit that illumines the darkness that this pandemic enforces upon us all. On behalf of our President Mrs. Janet Gasper Chowdhury and our CEO & Secretary Mr. Amitava Chowdhury I wish to thank our staff and students for their inspiring contributions and laudable efforts in making this e-magazine a reality. My special thanks to the editor of this e-magazine, Ms. Mahua Chakraborty, for being the driving force behind this initiative. I sincerely hope that as you browse through these pages you too will be filled with the same sense of resilience and hope, depicted by our students, which we all need to cherish today. Do stay safe and remember to be grateful. May God bless you all! 6 St. Augustine’sDay School IMPRESSION

Mr. A. K. Seal Vice Principal \"Education is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers, motivated students and enthusiastic parents with high expectations\" This Pandemic has reformed the entire education system. The most affected field is academia where the students are suffering much. They are missing their class rooms, teachers, friends, playground and much more. Their second home, the school remains vacant because of their inability to be physically present whereas, on the other hand, home has become their first school. The positive side is that the students, parents and we the teachers have become tech savvy and have together conquered the barrier which the pandemic has thrown at us. E-learning has emerged as the best way of imparting education in these testing times. In our school we strive to always focus on the overall development of the student which includes the academic, emotional, cultural, and physical. Therefore, the challenges were indeed big but we have managed successfully. Besides academics we have engaged our children in different meaningful activities and all our school programmes have been conducted effectively over the virtual platform. It’s my great pleasure to mention that during the pandemic this is yet another such effort to publish the 2nd edition of our e-magazine to provide our students a fitting stage to bring out their creative thoughts and expressions. This is not only an honest effort to showcase the talents of our budding authors, poets and artists, but also to a platform to express themselves and be proud of what they have been able to overcome. I remain grateful to all the parents and well-wishers for your priceless support and cooperation during these tough times and congratulate each one who has contributed to publish this e-magazine. Stay safe and secure. St. Augustine’sDay School IMPRESSION 7

S. J. MISHRA Academic Advisor Change is the only constant. This stands true for all spheres of life including the system of education. Over the decades, the world of education has seen a paradigm shift, reflecting on the role of the teacher as well as the teaching learning process. While we were gradually accepting and implementing the change, we were unaware of what the future had in store for the learners and the educators. As the Covid 19 pandemic hit the country in 2020, the whole system of school education had to make a sharp turn and shift to the online mode of teaching and learning almost overnight. All the three subsystems of education namely admissions, teaching- learning and assessments had to be online which was a huge challenge for both the students and the educators. However, patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. In the past couple of months as an academic advisor, my primary focus was to guide the students to unleash their true potential and work towards holistic development from their homes. To be able to make academic progress without attending physical school, it was imperative to make students set S.M.A.R.T (Specific , Measurable , Achievable , Relevant , Timebound) goals and work with dedication to realize the same. Also, we had to work consistently and with utmost dedication to uphold high standards in the process of teaching and learning even during the unprecedented pandemic time and deliver excellent results through effective guidance. Parents are stakeholders and an integral part of the school, therefore counseling parents to believe in the ethos of the school and work in harmony for the larger benefit of the students was another aspect of the work. Additionally, also ensuring that every student gets the required support and guidance during the pandemic to deal with adversities and stay focused on their academic targets was a continuous job. As it is rightly said, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Every day in the last one year, we have taken a step towards normalizing education in the adversities of the pandemic. A lot of sweat, hard work, patience, perseverance has been invested in innovation and digitization to lead to the asynchronous mode of teaching learning. Hoping that all of it helps every single student to perform to the best of their potential making us beam in pride forgetting all the hardships. 8 St. Augustine’sDay School IMPRESSION

ANTARA CHATTERJEE Headmistress, Pre-primary & Primary Section “Begin with little efforts today that add on to make a big difference tomorrow.” These words aptly describe the efforts of our President ma’am Ms.Janet Gasper Chowdhury & CEO & Secretary Mr. Amitava Chowdhury to make what St. Augustine’s Day School, Shyamnagar is today. An institution which, right since its inception has been the symbol of seeking & spreading knowledge. During this period, it has grown from strength to strength. This is the place where our creativity has been projected into reality. The cooperation of the teachers, the other staff members have made our journey fruitful & satisfying. This truly rewarding experience would not have been possible without the extraordinary help of our Principal Sir. Over the years, I have seen it soar high & give meaning to every student’s life. Let us on this occasion re-affirm our faith in continuing this journey of seeking & imparting knowledge with greater enthusiasm & set greater goals for the future. I wish my entire family of St. Augustine’s Day School, Shyamnagar all the very best. St. Augustine’sDay School IMPRESSION 9

A JOYFUL RIDE OF IDS (INTERNATIONAL DIMENSIONS OF SCHOOL)….. Our journey as an ISA Coordinator was filled with an important sense of responsibility and discipline when we were appointed as the coordinators by our institution, St. Augustine's Day School, Shyamnagar. We felt immense pleasure, grateful and fortunate to be a part of this project with the British Council for the international School Award. ISA (International School Award), now renamed as IDS (International Dimensions of School) was a project that helped out the students to enhance their mind set globally with an international dimension. We were trying to bring the wind of change and develop them as a global citizen with a boundless sky to fly free. And, this project had helped them to connect their scope of independence by marching beyond its area and by developing an international framework. Students from North 24 Parganas, an area where STADS bought a colour of change with this project and helped them to look and connect internationally, a scope to broaden their horizon. And, this all happened because of the British Council and their international learning and strategies which sparked out the zeal in our students to deal with every facet with confidence. As a coordinator, not only it helped us in our students to deal with every facet with confidence, improving the curriculum but my entire team with the positive outlook of our students who got an opportunity to feel the world beyond their imagination through different activities. We had tried our best to develop every individual globally and this project through the seven activities that we had conducted such as 'International Cultural Fiesta', \"Flaunting Flora', 'Water is Life', 'The Royal Monarchy', 'Boundaries on the shore', 'Calories Don't Count' and 'A Penny For your Thought'-had given an educative learning aspect and of being knowledgeable. ISA had definitely casted an impact on their observation powers and had changed their way of looking towards life, be it dealing with a project that involved a global appeal or development of consciousness and self-awareness in relation to several issues that had been a matter of concern these days. The students had learnt the art of living a quality life and also helped others to lead a life that had a positive impact on the immediate society and we had also learnt this art to make an attempt to this world a better place to live in. With the achievement of being awarded as an ISA-now IDS awardee, we hadn’t kept ourselves limited. The more wings we got we tried to gap, be it’s an international project with Lyceum International School for the ‘New Year Cover Song’ or ‘Point to Ponder’-debate session with Sri Lanka, Indonesia and other partner school or Navjeewan School collaboration with our little tiny tots. Last but not least, nothing can be achieved alone. We would like to thank my entire team of STADS including the management, heads, teachers, IT Department, students and parents, who helped us in every sphere of time and motivated the students to bring to the successful completion of our project. CCuorrsoinnag SURASHRITA DEY Class-v, Section - A, Roll No.-22 The corona virus covid-19 pandemic is the greatest challenge being faced by the world after World War- II. It started as an outbreak in the city of Wuhan in China, December 2019. It is a highly contagious disease caused by this virus. Its symptoms include mild to severe respiratory illness. In the second wave of covid, both older and younger people with the history of cardiovascular diseases, diabetics, chronic respiratory diseases and cancer. Children are also prone to the corona fatality. The mode of transmission of virus is through saliva, discharges from the nose when an infected person sneezes or coughs which teach us that this is a communicable disease. For all these reasons, we again got imprisoned at our home due to a lockdown, so that we could not get any contaminations with the intruders. After getting the news from the news channel, the lack of beds, oxygen cylinder, medicines for the patients in the hospitals, made me upset. Some of us lost our family members by this demon virus. Due to the lockdown, many businessmen, ordinary people have faced economic crises. After struggling hard with this natural disaster, GOD showed us a ray of happiness, that our parents and grandparents are able to get vaccinated. We should wear masks, use sanitizers, maintain social distance, get through vaccination to get out of this confined life. And must pray to GOD, as He always helps us to find out a way to get out from any problem we face. 40 St. Augustine’sDay School IMPRESSION
