Short stories have a few characters, singular complication, and are described as thematic. Also, they, in effect propel an intellectual and effective response to the readers. The Five Major Elements of a Short Story • Plot- this refers to the flow and sequence of events in a story. This also shows the causal relationship between and among the characters. The plot has several composites including exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and the denouement or resolution. • Exposition-beginning of a story. Characters, background and setting are revealed. • Conflict - it can be any struggle that a character faces. • Climax - turning point of the story. • Falling Action - this is where resolution begins.

• Resolution - final outcome of events in the story. • Setting - the background environment of the actions or events transpiring in a story. • Characters - the people who are involved in the story. Characters can either be the protagonist who is the leading actor or the antagonist who is against the protagonist. • Theme - the central meaning or idea of the story. It is a message that gives opinion about life, humanity, or society. • Point of View - this refers to who tells the story, and how they tell it. Preliminary Activity: Do you pray? Is there a time in your life that you doubted that there’s really a higher being? Task 1: A. read the selection on page 49, “When God Closes Doors” Urquiola,Luciana L., Lacuata, Ma. Juana P. Write the plot of the story with effective use of the different elements of a short story.
