I was one of those who got hooked by the taste of the fish that is just a tad larger than my little finger.... Even today I still longs to have it in my mouth. A couple years ago, I heard from a fresh market vendor in Nan that the fish had become nearly extinct because of unrelenting catch dur- ing its spawning season. My subsequent research informed me that the fish is in the genus Garra with a scientific name Garra parvifilum Fowler. It can be generally found in the tributaries of Nan River on the highland. Recently, research data have put it in the endangered species list. Later I learned more about the tasty Pla Man. This freshwater animal is endemic to the area. Importantly it is an indicator of the water quality as it can only survive in clean water with a high level of dissolved oxygen. Its eggs hatch within 18-19 hours. I also learned about conservation efforts of communities along the Wa river as well as other communities in the province. They have issued a community rule prohibiting the catch of Pla Man in parts of the river and in March of every year. 69
