smoke near your family and friends. This is because the smoke you puff out contains twice the amount of nicotine, three times the amount of tar, and five times the amount of carbon monoxide than what you inhale! The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has even listed second-hand smoke as a Group 1 carcinogen and has stated that there are no risk-free levels of exposure.7 A survey indicates that a majority of all female lung cancer patients in Guangdong, China are passive smokers, which means that they virtually inhale second-hand smoke on a daily basis. In Malaysia, many cancer pa- tients are often exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. Although they do not smoke, they inhale the smoke from their friends or clients who are smokers. So, is the environment considered safe when cigarette smoke dissipates in the air completely? Researchers discovered that as long as the smell of cigarettes persists, the level of toxicity remains high.8 Besides, sec- ond-hand smoke contains numerous respirable suspended particles and will hover in an enclosed room for long periods of time. If you stay in a smoking area for more than an hour and do a blood test, high levels of toxins from smoke including cotinine, nicotinamide and carbon monox- ide will show up. Now you know why it’s so important to stay away from second-hand smoke. Endangered by electromagnetic w aves On May 31st, 2011, the International Agency for Research on Can- cer (IARC) announced that electromagnetic radiation, both low-frequency electromagnetic radiation and radio frequency electromagnetic radiation, is now classified as Group 2B carcinogens (possible carcinogens).9 Radio frequency electromagnetic radiation is ubiquitous in daily life; it comes from mobile phones, Wi-Fi wireless networks, and microwaves. Low-fre- quency electromagnetic radiation comes from televisions, radios, refriger- ators, and water heaters. These daily appliances around us may potentially be carcinogenic. A research conducted in Switzerland has shown that the risk of 52 Stay Away From Cancer
developing breast cancer is seven times higher in people living in areas near high-voltage power lines compared to others.10 Italian experts have also discovered that electromagnetic waves have a close relationship with leukaemia in children.11 If you live in the city, it’s quite difficult to avoid electromagnetic waves. In order to minimize the harm, spread out all your household appliances that emit electromagnetic waves in different rooms. Furthermore, try not to stay in places with high electromagnetic radiation for long periods of time, such as in front of a computer or near the broad- cast towers, telecommunication towers, and radars. Do not buy a micro- wave oven if you do not need it. For computer users, do not open up the computer chassis and reveal the internal parts of the computer while you work as the chassis actually helps reduce electromagnetic waves. Some people like to place their mobile phones beside their beds, or even transform their bedrooms into mini-living rooms by placing all sorts of visual and audio equipment in it. You should see why this is a very bad idea. Instead of increasing your radiation load, try reducing it by installing an equipment that can help reduce the surrounding electromagnetic radi- ation. Hold your breath: cooking oil fumes Those who cook frequently are often satiated and lose their appe- tite after cooking. Not only that, they also feel tired and lethargic. Although they do not eat much, their weight increases continually, and they seem to be always coughing. If you fit the description mentioned above, you may have an occupational disease, acquired from breathing in too much oil fumes. Housewives who suffer from lung cancer are puzzled as to why they have the disease, even though they do not smoke or drink alcohol. However, in depth examination shows that they do smoke. They were in- haling in cooking oil fumes.12 Change Your Lifestyle and Habits 53
Before stir-frying, many chefs like to wait until the temperature is high enough and fumes begin to emerge from the cooking oil. However, heating cooking oils past their smoke point is extremely unhealthy. When tem- peratures reach 150°C, oils emit a spicy substance called acrylaldehyde. When temperatures exceed 250°C, oil molecules oxidize and release more than 200 types of carcinogens, including benzene, formaldehyde and cro- tonaldehyde. If oil fumes are not disposed of properly, chefs will inhale them in, reducing their appetite. Prevention is better than cure 54 Stay Away From Cancer
Four Ways to Avoid Cooking Oil Fumes: (1) Change the unhealthy method of stir-frying. Do not use too much oil while stir-frying, and make sure that the oil temperature does not exceed 200°C, or before any fumes start emerging from the heated oil. (2) It’s not wasteful to not recycle used oil. Although frugality is a virtue, frying with cooking oil re- peatedly will produce an excess of free radicals. Doing this not only harms the health of the chef but also the family enjoying the meal. (3) Keep the kitchen ventliated at all times. If there are no doors or windows in the kitchen, you must install an exhaust fan or kitchen ventilator. Do not switch off the exhaust fan or kitchen ventilator immediately after cooking. Switch off the ventilator after ten minutes or after the fumes have been removed. (4) Try using healthier cooking methods such as steaming, broiling, and stewing. Switching to electrical appliances such as rice cookers, electric ovens, or electric pots is also a good way to reduce oil fumes. Change Your Lifestyle and Habits 55
Stop burning the midnight oil Burning the midnight oil is an expression for hard work and ded- ication but at the same time, it can be a factor that increases the risk of cancer. When a person is sleeping, organs in the body are not completely asleep. Some hormone secretions happen mostly during night time. For example, most of the body’s adrenocortical hormone is secreted before dawn, while a majority of growth hormone is secreted during sleep, and melatonin is only secreted properly when exposure to light at night is re- duced.13 These hormones play an important role in the health of the body. Staying up late and reducing sleep quantity or quality, or missing the opti- mal bedtime will cause a deficiency in hormonal secretions. A research from Harvard University revealed that those who stay up late often or work night shifts have a 50 percent higher chance of get- ting cancer, especially breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Long-term fatigue and staying up late will weaken the immune system, resulting in a body that is powerless to resist the development of cancerous cell. As nighttime is when cell differentiation is the strongest, staying up late will likely result in cell differentiation disorders, causing mutation and thus terrifying cancer cells. In particular, if you sleep less than six hours a day, the risk of cancer will increase significantly. The optimal sleep time is between 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. If you are un- able to sleep within this period of time, you should take supplements reg- ularly, such as calcium, magnesium, vitamins A, B, C, and antioxidants to reduce the harmful effects on your body caused by staying up late. During sleep, find a dark comfortable room, as darkness will help stimulate the pineal gland in your brain to secrete melatonin.14 Staying up late will speed up aging and shorten lifespan, so if you want to live longer, sleep earlier. 56 Stay Away From Cancer
Risks of a scalded tongue When people serve food on the table, they often like to say the po- lite phrase: “eat it while it is hot!” Some people like to drink soup while it is boiling hot, while others like to drink hot tea or coffee, because the steam enhances its aroma. Sorry to break it to you, but these high-temperature drinks and soups may increase the risk of mouth cancer and oesophageal cancer.15 Hot pots (also known as steamboats) and soups, where tempera- tures easily exceed 100°C, may burn your mouth, tongue, oesophagus and gastric mucosa if you don’t let it cool for a few minutes. The mouth and oesophagus can typically endure temperatures around 50 to 60°C, but will be mildly scalded they come into contact with temperatures above 75°C. Therefore, the most suitable temperature for food when it enters your mouth should be between 10 and 40°C. Medi- cal studies show that people who consume sizzling hot meals have thick- ened mucous membranes due to heat stimulation. Gradually their mucosa membrane will no longer be sensitive to heat stimulation and they will be able to raise their temperature toleration and consume hotter foods. How- ever, with the repeated renewal of the damaged mucous membrane, there is a tendency of cell mutation after a period of time. This is also the main reason why there is such a high incidence of oesophageal cancer in Nara, Japan and Xinjiang and Taihang, China.16 Eating high-temperature foods may lead to cancer. Grilling brains w ith cell phones!? Ever since the entry of the world’s first mobile phone in the market in 1973, mobile phones have become more and more sophisticated. A Brit- ish survey in 2006 revealed that 51 percent of 10-year-old children have their own mobile phones, and the percentage was even higher for 12-year- olds: 91 percent.17 Mobile phones are now a daily necessity for everyone. But are mobile phones really safe? WHO believes that mobile phones can increase the risk of cancer! A report pointed out that using mo- bile phones for an average of 30 minutes daily increases the risk of gliomas, or tumours in the brain, by 40 percent.18 The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIE) also confirmed that placing a mobile phone close to your ear for more than 50 minutes will cause abnormal changes in brain activities.19 Mobile phones are like mini microwaves, although the radiation emitted is minute, as time passes, the brain will slowly go from “raw” to “well-done”. Experiments have shown that the electromagnetic wave radiation emitted from mobile phones can penetrate about 1.5 inches of the human skull. This radiation is especially harmful to children, since their skull is thinner. Therefore if you began mobile phone use at a young age, the risk of getting brain cancer after reaching the age of 40 increases by two-and- a-half-fold. A clinical study also discovered that brain tumours typically grew on the side of the patient’s head that frequently came in contact with the cell phone during phone calls, thereby highlighting a close link be- tween mobile phone use and brain cancer.20 It is best to be as far away as possible from your mobile phone while you’re using it. Using speakerphone mode or an earpiece should add a safe distance between you and your phone. Nano energy chips that reduce elec- tromagnetic radiation are also available in the market, and this should pro- vide greater protection for frequent mobile phone users. Choose the right cup Many different types of cups are available in the market, includ- ing the traditional glass, ceramic cups, disposable paper cups, plastic cups Change Your Lifestyle and Habits 59
often used in snack bars, and durable stainless steel mugs. However, it’s important to pay attention to the type of cup you are using, otherwise low quality cups may leech toxins into your water or beverage. So, which cup is considered the most dangerous? Let’s shift our focus on plastic products first. On each plastic bottle or underneath the plastic cup, you will see a triangular logo formed by arrows, and a number inside the triangle. This is the identification number of the plastic product, and different numbers indicate a different type of plastic product. Each type of plastic has its own characteristics and functions, and using the wrong plastic product for the wrong purpose may lead to can- cer (please refer to the chart below). For instance, many people ignore the plastic number and microwave every type of plastic, turning a delicious meal into a toxic meal. Some people believe they are doing the planet a fa- vour by reusing and refilling plastic bottles. However, if the bottle is made S/N Chemical Name Abbreviation Common Usage Nature 1 Polyethylene Glycol PET Bottles for mineral Deforms easily when exposed Terephthalate water and carbonated to heat anDŽd releases drinks carcinogen DEHP. 2 High-Density HDPE In cleaning products, Polyethylene toiletries and tends to breed fungus. supermarket plastic bags 3 Polyvinyl PV Food packages Deforms easily when exposed to Chloride heat , and releases carcinogen that cause breast cancer. 4 Low-Density LDPE Food wrappers, Starts to melt and sticks to food Polyethylene when temperature is over 110ć. 5 Polypropylene PP Microwave lunch can be put into the microwave oven. 6 Polystyrene PS boxes Cup noodles and Cannot be used to hold strong 7 Polycarbonate PC fast food containers acidic and alkaline substances, otherwise carcinogen Flasks, cups and polystyrene will be released. milk bottles May release bisphenol A when exposed to heat. 60 Stay Away From Cancer
of No. 1 plastic, unsafe levels of DEHP, a carcinogen, will be absorbed into the user’s body after long-term usage. No. 3 plastic is even more dangerous—inappropriate usage may lead to breast cancer. You must be careful in your choice of cups for hot water. If you drink hot water from a glass, the heat transfer may cause cracks. If you drink hot water from a paper cup, unknown chemicals from the cup will dissolve in the water. Drink hot water from a plastic cup is even more dan- gerous as it will leach out harmful chemicals. Although drinking hot water from a stainless steel cup is safer, if the cup is of poor quality, metals will also leach into the water. Heat-resistant, colourless ceramic mugs are the best choice. Choosing the right cup also requires some knowledge and re- search, so for the sake of your health, please use the right cup. Beneath all that makeup— chemicals Modern people are concerned with their outer appearance. While engaging in your daily routine of applying and removing makeup, have you ever wondered how much chemical substances your face is absorbing in a year? Statistics compiled by UK researchers state that a person will come into contact with at least 175 different types of chemical substances when he or she uses 12 types of cosmetic products every day; this translates to an average of 2.25 kg of chemi- cal substances absorbed through the skin and mouth per year! A survey revealed that among the branded cosmetic products sold in the market, 70 percent contain hazardous chemical substances, and 30 percent even contain toxic carcinogens. Currently, a research from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has shown that the ingredients of Change Your Lifestyle and Habits 61
many cosmetic brands have not passed safety inspections; they require those cosmetic product manufacturers to label their products with the statement, “Warning! The safety of this product has not been determined!” Would you take the risk? One of the Stygian secrets of cosmetic products was exposed by scientific research—many cosmetics and makeup removers contain par- aben, which increases the chances of breast cancer in women after long- term exposure. Also, be careful if the label indicates that the product con- tains chemical substances such as phthalate esters, PAEs and p-Phenylene diamine, as all of these may increase the risk of cancer.21 Avoid mosquito coils The dreadful mosquitoes are coming out once again in search for blood on a warm night. Many people awake in the middle of the night to the buzzing sound of mosquitoes. Some lose their temper, hop out of bed, flick on the lights, and swear that they will not rest until they kill every single mosquito in the room. Others will just ignore them and light up a mosquito coil before going back to sleep. However aggravating mosquitos are, the latter action is the real cause for concern, as mosquito coils contain four types of carcinogens: airborne particles, polycyclic aromatic hydro- carbons, carbonyl compounds and benzene.22 A research determined that the number of airborne particles emitted from burning one mosquito coil is equivalent to the number emitted from burning 137 cigarettes.23 People light up mosquito coils to kill mosquitoes, so they will seal up the whole room, hop- ing that the smoke will fill up the room and kill all the mosquitoes. This is a very erroneous method since the hazardous gases cannot be dispersed when a mosquito coil is burning in a closed room. Therefore, after lighting up a mosquito coil, 62 Stay Away From Cancer
you must leave the room and stay outside until you can no longer smell the smoke from the mosquito coil. Even after then, you still have to open the doors and windows to maintain ventilation. If you find this troublesome and yet hate the disturbance of mos- quitoes, I suggest you get a mosquito net. In addition, look for all possible breeding grounds in your house or surroundings like exposed water-filled containers and dispose them appropriately, so as to prevent the mosquitoes from breeding. In seasons where mosquitoes are rampant, it is best to be armed with an electric mosquito racket. Putting nature’s call on hold Certain times in human relationships, we are placed in a situation where we must endure and wait. However, in bodily processes, there are certain things that we must not endure and wait, especially when nature is calling! Many people, when buried in a heap of work, claim that the reason they are unwilling to go to the toilet is because it will affect their work mo- mentum. That’s an absurd excuse! It’s important to know that withholding stools will lead to colon cancer. Withholding stool is an unhealthy habit, as the stool will be suspended in your colon, causing all kinds of toxins, such as pentamethylene diamine, methane, histamine, ammonia, benzpyrole, skatole, and hydrogen sulphide, to be produced and reabsorbed, resulting in autointoxication. People who experience chronic constipation are three times more likely to develop cancer than normal people. Holding your urine is also a very unhealthy habit. If you hold your urine in your bladder over extended periods of times, carcinogens in your urine will have greater effects on your bladder. U.S. scien- tists have conducted a research especially on this issue and have discovered that peo- ple with this habit are five times more likely to develop bladder cancer than those who don’t. Eating less is more Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir shared a se- cret to his longevity when he was 86 years old. When asked about his secret to longevity and health, he said: “One is, never overeat. My mother always told me that when the food tastes good, that’s the time you must stop eat- ing. Later as a doctor, I realized why. When the food is good, you tend to overeat; and when you overeat, your stomach increases in size, and in or- der to stop your hunger, you eat more food. That is the problem the world is facing today with obesity: people are eating too much.” When you are beginning to enjoy your meal in a hearty manner, it is time to stop eating, no matter how unwilling you are. This is the healthcare concept of filling your stomach to 70 percent full. Even though you still have the capacity to eat, you should stop eating. A group of scientists conducted a research which revealed that monkeys who ate to 70 percent full had an increase in lifespan by 37 per- cent. An Italian study also showed that eating up to 70 percent full will ac- tivate CREB1 molecules in the body, keeping the brain young and enhanc- ing the brain’s learning abilities, memory, and emotional control functions. 24 In contrast, having full meals in the long run will accelerate the aging of the brain. Leaving your stomach hungry once in a while is beneficial for your body. Scientists have discovered that hunger whets the appetite of phago- cytes. On the contrary, when a person is overstuffed, the phagocytes in his or her body will become sluggish and inactive. In other words, when the sense of hunger dissipates, the human body will leave metabolic wastes alone, and the immune system will not be as activated. The Chinese saying: “When the stomach ceases to digest, disease starts spreading to vital organs” illustrates the fact that when a person loses his or her appetite, illness begins to advance and tends to get the upper hand. Consuming digestive enzymes on a regular basis will help protect the pancreas effectively and enhance its function. So, take good care of your pancreas, and it’ll take good care of you in the years to come. 64 Stay Away From Cancer
Throw aw ay spoilt and mouldy foods Such a pity to throw away the whole bag of mouldy bread! Can’t we just peel away the parts that are mouldy? No. Once the bread turns mouldy, the whole loaf of bread is contaminated with fungus and can no longer be eaten. Any food stored improperly will spoil and turn mouldy after some time. When this happens, funguses attached to food will release more than 200 types of toxins. In the case that you accidentally consume these con- taminated foods, you may suffer from liver, kidney, nervous system, and gastrointestinal poisoning. If aflatoxins are consumed often, the chances of suffering from liver cancer increases.25 Aflatoxin is an extremely poisonous substance that can be pro- duced by mouldy foods. If you sense a weird bitter taste while eating pea- nuts or nuts, you must spit them out immediately and rinse your mouth, because that is what aflatoxins tastes like. If you cook with peanut oil, be sure to examine it before cooking by stir-frying some garlic cloves with it. If the garlic cloves turn red in colour, then do yourself a favour and discard the whole bottle of peanut oil, because it is already tainted with aflatoxins. Aflatoxin is actually not that frightening. As long as you avoid foods contaminated with it, it can’t cause you any harm. The acts of dis- honest, greedy-for-profit businessmen are the real scare. Often times, they would include mouldy peanuts in their production and use large quantities of flavourings, essences, and MSG to cover up the bitter taste of aflatoxins, keeping the consumers in the dark. As a result, a large number of toxic, poor quality foods flow into the market. Foods prone to contamination by aflatoxin include peanuts, corns, walnuts and gutter oil; try not to include so much of these foods in your diet. Don’t join the “endurer” club A WHO survey showed that only 5 percent of the world’s popu- lation is truly healthy, while 20 percent suffer from some form of major illness and the remaining 75 percent are in a suboptimal health state. those who have suboptimal health, 57 percent have declining memory, 48 percent have emotional issues, 66 percent have sleep problems, 58 percent tend to get tired easily, and 62 percent have back and leg pains. Examine yourself, are you healthy, in a suboptimal health state or suffering from some kind of illnesses? A group of people have a higher risk of cancer, and they are, the “endurers”, people who think they can live on with their pains and sick- nesses. These people tend to neglect their bodies and fail to take care of themselves when they are in a suboptimal health status. comes and they can no longer endure anymore, they are usually waiting at the doorsteps of an advanced stage cancer. As a person living in modern society, you must develop a heighten sense of awareness to your health, since modern humans are more prone to developing cancers than people living before the Industrial Revolution. Do not ignore any strange signs in your body, as they may be warning signs of cancer. Sun Simiao, a famous physician from the Tang Dynasty, divided body conditions into three stages—“Healthy”, “Disease-prone” and “Dis- eased”. If you desire to avoid cancer, you must cultivate the habit of pre- vention even before nuanced signs of a disease begin to manifest in your body. This means that you must take preventive measures before your body slumps into a suboptimal or disease-prone health status. You should make effort in protecting your health at all times, as prevention is always better than cure. References 1) University of Manchester November 2005 2) Frisvad, J. C., R. A. Samson, and J. Chapter 4 Have You Been Eating Correctly? Poison lurking in fat, w ho knew ? A high-fat diet will lead to numerous health issues, including heart disease,1 high blood pressure,2 stroke,3 gallstones,4 pancreatitis,5 hepati- tis,6 obesity, impotency,7 Alzheimer’s disease8 and renal disease.9 This is a well-known fact. However, you may not have realized that excess fats in our body are actually in cahoots with cancer cells. Many carcinogens are fat-soluble substances, therefore, most of the toxins that we consume are hidden in our fat tissues. Women who take in higher amounts of saturated fat or have high- er levels of cholesterol have heightened chances of ovarian cancer. Latest medical research has proven that a high-fat diet tends to cause kidney can- cer, intestinal cancer, endometrial cancer, breast cancer and ovarian can- cer. If you weigh only 60 kg, then the amount of fat you consume per day should not exceed 27g. Common high-fat foods include peanuts, pis- tachios, sesame seeds, walnuts, fatty meats, butter, red meat, vegetable oils, deep-fried foods, bakery foods, dim sum, cakes and biscuits. Staying away from saturated fats, oxidized fats and trans fats will draw you closer to good health. Be w ary of sugar addiction We view cigarettes, alcoholic drinks and fried foods as harmful, but a regularly consumed substance is even more harmful, and that is sug- ar.10 A group of Swedish scientists discovered that sweet foods are similar 70 Stay Away From Cancer
to recreational drugs because they cause addiction and quietly eat away one’s health. Not only can sweet foods corrode teeth and eye sight, they can also corrode the stomach and lead to gastric ulcers. They can even corrode deep into the bones and cause osteoporosis. Most frightening of all, sweet foods can also induce fatal coronary heart disease and cancer.11,12 A research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutri- tion pointed out that just a slice of white bread with jam a day can increase cancer risk by 50 percent; five teaspoons of sugar, 70 percent; two glasses of sweet beverages, 90 percent. WHO also states that people who consume sweets over a long period of time typically live 20 years less than people on normal diets. Hearing all this, would you still dare to Taking 5 teaspoons of sugar daily will increase the risk of cancer by 70%. put so much sugar in your mouth? The types of sugars mentioned or present in the foods mentioned above are all refined sugars, frequently used in processed foods such as bis- cuits, cakes, white bread, pastries, and doughnuts. Chemically synthesized artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and acesulfame K are much more harmful to humans. A research indicates that high fructose corn syrup is more conducive to cancer cell growth than glucose as fructose expedites cancer cell division, thus speeding up tumour growth and spread. 13 Of course, sugars, which are carbohydrates, are essential to the body, so one shouldn’t go cold turkey on all sugars. However, making the right choice is what’s important, and the key here is to consume less re- fined foods, artificial sweeteners, and fructose and obtaining more starch from natural foods such as coarse grains, brown rice, whole wheat foods, and vegetables. Just be sure to minimize sugary foods in your diet, and get rid of that sweet tooth, if you have one. Have You Been Eating Correctly? 71
Reduce red meat portions What is the difference between red meat and white meat? As the names suggest, red meat is red in colour before it is cooked and has a high- er content of saturated fatty acid, while white meat is white in colour be- fore it is cooked and has a lower content of saturated fatty acid. Generally speaking, meat from livestock such as cows, lambs and pigs are classified as red meat while meat from poultry and fish are considered as white meat by the USDA. The daily intake of red meat should not exceed 42g and the consumption of white meat should be limited within 100g.14 The Cancer Research Centre of Hawaii, University of Hawaii point- ed out that a person who eats more than two ounces (56.7g) of red meat every day increases his chances of pancreatic cancer by 50 percent.15 Be- sides a higher risk for pancreatic cancer, a higher risk for colon and breast cancer is also induced with more red meat in diet. For this reason, the In- ternational Agency for Research on Cancer of WHO advocates eating less meat and more fish.16 Too much salt can kill Excessive consumption of salt typically lead to a multitude of chronic diseases such as renal disease, edema, and high blood pressure. 17 18A recent study also revealed that consuming too much salt will lead to fatal gastric cancer.19 The chemical composition of salt is sodium chloride, which contains sodium, a mineral required by the body and an important element that helps maintain osmotic pressure and pH level in the body. However, consuming too much salt often leads to adverse effects on our health. In an experiment, a scientist fed a dozen white mice with concen- trated salt water every day. Half a year later, these white mice started to 72 Stay Away From Cancer
behaved abnormally and tossed themselves around in the cage. Later dis- sections revealed that the white mice’s gastric mucosa had different degrees of hyperaemia, edema, erosions, ulcers, bleeding, and necrosis. Salt is not a carcinogen by itself, but high concentrations of salt will damage the gastric mucosa, cause erosions and ulcers, thereby leading to partial canceriza- tion. In Hong Kong and Guangdong Province, the incidence of naso- pharyngeal cancer is very high. This is linked to the locals’ love for pre- served foods such as salted fish.20 21Although the Japanese hail from the “land of longevity”, gastric cancer incidence is relatively high among them. This is a problem related to the Japanese’s love for pickled products such as pickled vegetables, called tsukemono.22 To tackle the problem, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare specially stipulated that daily salt intake shall not exceed 9g and 7.5g for males and females respectively.23 Another survey revealed that people living in areas with a high incidence of gastric cancer consume a daily average of 50g of salt while people living in areas with a low incidence consume only an average of 6g! This shows that high sodium intake and gastric cancer are closely related. Alcohol: enough said After a drink or two, some faces start radiating an unmistakable red. Although people who react quickly to alcohol are not really drunk and can still walk properly, they are nonetheless suffering from alcohol poison- ing. Their bodies lack a certain enzyme that can metabolize alcohol, result- ing in the rapid oxidization of alcohol into acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is listed as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.24 Researchers discovered that many people have a very high level of acetaldehyde in their body after drinking. 30 to 50 percent of Asians have trouble metabolizing acetaldehyde to acetate.25 As a result, toxins in the body accumulate, sending the risk of cancer beyond safe limits. Statistics have shown that for alcoholics, the risk of cancers of the digestive system, Have You Been Eating Correctly? 73
such as oral cancer, laryngeal cancer, liver cancer, and oesophageal cancer is 20 times higher than normal people. The risk of cancer for alcoholics who are simultaneously heavy smokers can be as high as 100 times more than abstainers!26 There are a great variety of alcoholic beverages, but the most harm- ful ones are hard liquors, sorghum wines, yellow wines, Japanese sakes, and beers. Although red wines contain antioxidants such as resveratrol and tan- nate, drinking too much can still be dan- gerous as alcohol content in red wines are relatively high. So, what is a suitable alco- hol serving size? A study from the Oxford University suggested that alcohol intake should not exceed 5g a day.27 This is ap- proximately 125ml of beer or one small glass of red wine. Alcohol can help people If you smoke and drink, your risk of wind down and cheer up, and it is a com- cancer is 100 times more than that mon beverage in social settings; so if you of normal people. drink a bit more once in a while, just be sure to detoxify promptly. If you start blushing after one drink, then stopping immediately would be a wise choice, as your risk of oesophageal cancer is 10 times higher than normal people.28 The hidden dangers of coffee Caffeine has now become the world’s most widespread stimulant and is added into our foods and drinks liberally. Foods that contain caf- feine include coffee, chocolate, Guarana drinks, tea, cola, energy drinks, and sodas. Caffeine has become a daily “necessity” of modern civilization. In North America, about 90 percent of the adult population consumes caf- feine daily.29 Some of them use caffeine to give themselves a boost, while others are simply addicted to it. Research has shown that after we consume caffeine, only 1 percent 74 Stay Away From Cancer
of it can be expelled while the remaining 99 percent has to be detoxified and broken down by the liver, staying in the body system for about 12 hours before being expelled from the body. According to research, a per- son addicted to caffeine needs at least seven days before his body can expel all the caffeine. If a person’s liver is not detoxifying or functioning well, it can take up to three weeks before all the caffeine is expelled. The damage caused by coffee on the human body not only includes high blood pressure, kidney disease, osteoporosis, insomnia, and mental disorders, but also includes an increase in cancer risk, especially bladder cancer and pancreatic cancer.30 31 32 33 34 35 36 Research has proven that cof- fee lovers who drink coffee regularly have four times the risk of developing pancreatic cancer than normal people. For individuals who drink more than three cups of coffee per day, the risk of developing bladder cancer can be 2.19 times higher than those who abstain from coffee.37 Cancer risks are higher in coffee frequent coffee drinkers because coffee suppresses the repair of DNA and induces cell mutation during the mitosis process.38 Coffee steals nutrients when you least expect it, that is why coffee lovers must replenish themselves with all kinds of nutrients and break loose from their addiction at the same time. &RHHVWHDOV\\RXUQXWULHQWVZKHQ you least expect it. Risks of charcoal grilling Burning wood until it is charred will produce useful charcoal, but roasting food until it is charred will produce harmful ben- zopyrene, a type of polycyclic aromatic hy- drocarbon (PAH).39 Benzopyrene is the big brother among carcinogens. Even though it is very toxic, many people are still duped by its savoury aroma. In 1775, a man was diagnosed with a rare scrotum cancer, which made people scratch their heads as they searched for the cause. They soon discovered that he worked as a chimney worker during childhood, and the smoke dust from burning coal that constantly came into contact with his lower body was the cause of cancer.40 Later, sci- Burnt foods contain the entists studied these smoke dusts and dis- carcinogen benzopyrene covered that these carcinogens present in smoke dusts exist in our foods too! 41 42 Smoking, roasting, and baking food tend to burn foods. Although charred foods have a pleasant aroma, they are in reality extremely toxic. The higher the temperature used in cooking, the greater the amount of benzopyrene is produced in food. Common foods that contain polycy- clic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) include roasted meat, barbecued meat, roasted duck, jerky, and smoked fish, and the list goes on and on. Hence, the burnt portion of your food must never be eaten. Trust me, harming your body over a burnt chicken wing is not worth it. Don’t mummify yourself In the ancient times of the pyramids, Egyptian pharaohs, in their quest for immortality, ordered their priests to invent a potion with pre- 76 Stay Away From Cancer
servative properties that could be used for mummification. That was the first known preservative in human history. However, in- stead of being used to prevent corpse decom- position, preservatives are now found in food for human consumption. By eating heaps of processed foods, don’t you think humans are mummifying themselves, inside out? Consumption of preservatives in excess tend to cause cancers in the digestive tract such as liver cancer, gastric cancer, and intes- tinal cancer.43 44 45 Yet, the toxic preservatives are found nearly everywhere. If you careful- ly read the labels on foods, you will discover that most of them contain preservatives. For example, the preservative content in soy sauce is 0.1 percent; in carbonated drinks, 0.03-0.05 percent.46 Although this seems minute, daily consumption of foods containing preserva- tives will desensitize the stomach, and with long-term accumulation, lead to cancer. Nev- ertheless, some preservatives are not written on the labels, can you imagine how dangerous such today’s foods are? Many imported fruits are sprayed with a large quantity of pesticides and preservatives. Think about it, how long does it take for goods to be produced overseas, imported, placed Company get-together on shelves, purchased by the consumer, and placed into the refrigerator for future enjoy- ment? Without preservatives, these imported foods would have spoilt a long time ago. Preservatives are indeed the solution for many businesses, but at the same time, they are hazardous to the health of consumers. Eat- Have You Been Eating Correctly? 77
ing less canned foods, frozen foods, preserved foods, packaged beverages, instant foods, and junk foods will sharply reduce your chances of coming into contact with preservatives. Shockingly, many imported fruits are sprayed with large quantities of pesticides and preservatives. Keep an eye out for nitrosamine Nitrosamine is very harmful to the human body, and even though we don’t eat it, it can be produced in food spontaneously. Common preservatives in the market include nitrite, sulphur di- oxide, sulphite, and benzoate. Of these, the most harmful preservative is nitrite. It may not be eye-catching, but once heated up, it will transform into highly carcinogenic nitrosamine. It is often found in meat, where the transformation takes place. In fact, nitrosamine is found in nearly all preserved meat, such as Chinese sausages, smoked meat, ham, Frankfurt sausages, hotdogs, minced 78 Stay Away From Cancer
beef and luncheon meat. Without nitrite, meats turn grey instead of stay pink. Studies done by Swedish scientists have shown that an increase of 30g of processed meat in daily diet will increase the risk of gastric cancer by 38 percent. 48 Nitrosamine exists in a wide range of products. Not only do pro- cessed meats produce nitrosamine, vegetables containing nitrates also produce nitrosamine. About 86 percent of nitrates in the human body are derived from vegetables including carrots, celeries, eggplants, and cabbag- es.49 Nitrates are unavoidable as fertilizers used for these crops contain nitrogen. Nitrates in vegetables turn into nitrite when broken down by bacteria, and will turn into nitrosamine after complex chemical reactions in the digestive tract. Experiments show that cooked vegetables placed into the refrigera- tor for six hours have an increase in nitrite content. More notably, the syn- thesizing effect in dishes containing meat is even faster. If leftovers are not kept in the refrigerator, nitrite contents will exceed twice the safety limit in approximately four hours. To sum things up, avoid foods that are not fresh and overnight leftovers that have been stored away for over 12 hours, otherwise, you will be at a higher risk of excessive nitrosamine intake. Leave fried starchy foods out of your diet Natural starchy vegetables such as potatoes, taros, and sweet po- tatoes are considered healthy foods, but once they are deep-fried, their structures change. Swedish scientists reported that when these starch- based foods are cooked at a high temperature of 120°C, they produce large amounts of acrylamide, a carcinogen.50 This carcinogen is often found lurking in deep-fried and baked foods, such as French fries, potato chips, Japanese tempura, deep-fried dough sticks, flatbreads, instant noodles, and various snacks. Many deep-fried foods in the market contains acrylamide. Once acryl- amide enters into the body, it will be absorbed in a short time, and the person may display signs of drowsiness, irritability, and memory decline. Tremors, hallucination, sweaty palms and legs, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, cancer of the reproductive system may also be induced by acrylamide intake. A research by Harvard University showed that giving a packet of French fries to a preschool girl every week will increase the risk of developing breast cancer by up to 27 percent by the time she grows up.51 Research reports have shown that acrylamide contained in French fries or potatoes chips exceed the safety limit by more than 500 times, and is 4 times that of other deep-fried grains. “Okay, if starchy foods are not suitable for deep-frying, what about meat?” you may ask. However, when meat is deep-fried, it, such produces all kinds of carcinogens such as poly- cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and a large quantity of free radicals. These toxins create a plethora of harmful effects once they enter into the human body, and will speed up the aging process. Fried foods, seriously, they have absolutely no benefits to your health. Try switching to better alternatives and preparation methods. Don’t eat microw aved foods Since ancient times, food has been viewed as a primary necessity, and so a variety of methods to cook food were invented. Steaming, stewing, broiling, roasting, frying, deep-frying, baking, smoking, and simmering 80 Stay Away From Cancer
are the cooking methods we are familiar with. However, with the advance- ment of technology, a newer, high-tech cooking method was invented— microwaving. But little do people realize that while this invention provides convenience, it also endangers their lives and leaves them in the dark. The Russian government once banned the use of microwave ovens in 1976 as a number of their studies showed that microwaved food caused many health consequences:52 1) Using a microwave oven to cook meat produce a type of carcinogen called d-Nitrosodiethanolamine. 2) Using a microwave oven to warm milk and cereal turns amino acids into carcinogens. 3) Using a microwave oven to defrost fruits turns its sugars into carcino- gens. 4) Using a microwave oven to cook vegetables turns alkaloids into carcin- ogens.53 In addition, those who frequently consume microwaved food suf- fer from an array of symptoms called the “microwave sickness”. First, they will have low blood pressure, followed by tension in the sympathetic ner- vous system. Later, other health conditions such as headaches, dizziness, sore eyes, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, irritability, stomach-aches, hair loss, appendicitis, cataracts, infertility, and even gastric cancer and intesti- nal cancer may appear.54 55 Even if you do not have a microwave oven at home, you may be consuming microwaved food unknowingly. According to a survey, foods sold in hotels, bars, dance halls, clubs, and restaurants are often cooked with microwave ovens. If you are a frequent flyer, you may notice that meals catered on planes are heated with microwave ovens. Think it through, how many servings of such unsafe meals have you consumed? Chapter 5 A Complete Strategy for Detoxification, Healthcare and Fighting Cancer: Seven Therapies I have spent more than 20 years in clinical research on detoxifi- cation. People call me the “Detox Princess” as I always manage to bring up the importance of detoxification and wellness in virtually almost every setting. I am very glad that you are now reading this book. Thank you for taking your time to listen to my heartfelt words. I dare to even guarantee that as long as you are willing to take this path of detoxification and healthcare, you will uncover the true gateway to health. After returning to Malaysia from the United States, I have been promoting this detox health plan so that my family and friends may enjoy good health. Now, I am passing the key of this gateway to you, in hope that you will also make it through together with your loved ones. True detoxification begins w ith the cells If you want your cells to regain their health, you should practice the four steps of detoxification: cellular detoxification, toxin elimination, nu- trient absorption, and cellular regeneration. This is the result of the com- bination of my medical research in China, the United States, Russia, and Japan, as well as my clinical experiences for over 20 years. Once cells are poisoned, the person will feel uncomfortable, as a human being is made up of over 60 trillion cells. Hence, in order to regain healthy cells, detoxifica- tion and regeneration of cells is fundamental. Why is it so toxic? We often bring up the word “detoxification”. So what toxins are we 86 Stay Away From Cancer
trying to “detox”? According to the concepts of conventional medicine, toxins refer to metabolic wastes, bacteria, and viruses. In Chinese medi- cine, toxins are the so-called “six evils” of wind, cold, heat, humidity, dry- ness and fire; and in nutrition, any substances that are harmful to the hu- man body are considered “toxins”. There are a wide variety of toxins, but they are usually classified into two main categories, which are the “exogenous toxins” from the living environment, and the “endogenous toxins” produced in the human body during metabolism. “Exogenous toxins” refer to pollutants such as chemi- cals, chemical additives, carcinogens, radiation, heavy metal, bacteria, and viruses that we often come into contact with; “endogenous toxins” include the metabolic wastes in the body, such as lactic acid, keto acid, uric acid, free radicals, cholesterols, aging and dying cells, and cancer cells. These toxins will endanger our health in many different ways. Perhaps some people may think that since urban areas are filled with toxins, the best and simplest solution would be to live in seclusion in the mountains. No doubt that our living environment is filled with toxins, but even if we leave the pollution-filled cities, our body’s metabolism will continue to produce toxins regardless. When we are healthy, our body has the ability to neutralize and expel these toxins. However, when there are obstacles to the detoxifying and toxin-expelling organs, the body can no longer function well, and its detoxifying ability will be reduced or lost. For instance, gout is caused by excessive uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is a metabolic waste product, but when the human body is unable to discharge them out of the body normally, uric acid crystals will accumulate around the joints and cause gout. The aforementioned is a commonly seen example. People with sub- health condition may not exhibit any obvious pains or illnesses, but in fact their detoxifying functions may have been compromised already. This is extremely dangerous as the loss of detoxifying functions will eventually lead to the development of a chronic disease. The seed of cancer is germi- nated under such sub-health conditions. Yes, we may not be able to escape from the grasps of toxins, but we may fight them face to face by strength- A Complete Strategy for Detoxi cation, Healthcare and Fighting Cancer: Seven Therapies 87
ening our body’s detoxifying capabilities. This way, toxins will not have the opportunity to wreak havoc in our bodies. Four steps to a healthy life First step in detoxification: deep cell detoxification To cut off all our ties with cancer once and forever, the first and most fundamental thing you must do is to carry out an in-depth detoxi- fication of your cells, which includes the in-depth detoxification of areas such as the brain, bones, and blood. The Earth that we now live in is pollut- ed, and a large quantity of toxins from chemicals, heavy metals, and stress due to our diet, environment, work, and lifestyle are quietly and relentless- ly residing in our cells. Hence, we must detoxify our cells. Many people place great emphasis on the expulsion of toxins, but without detoxification, how can we expel the toxins? This is my creed and what I’ve learned from my decades of medical practice. Due to the years of toxin accumulation in every part of the body, the effects of toxin elimina- tion alone 0are superficial and cannot effectively remove the toxins in the body. Therefore, we must first break down the toxins in the body before expelling them. The toxins in the body can thus be completely effaced. The Chinese have a habit of asking, “Have you eaten yet?” whenev- er they meet someone. Every Chinese is familiar with this greeting phrase as it has become a pet phrase in their culture. However, as a doctor, I ask a different question every time a patient comes to see me: “Have you detoxed today?” Second step in detoxification: colon cleansing Next, you must ensure that expulsion of the toxins goes without a hitch in the body. In this step, a clean and proper functioning large intes- tine is very important. A healthy adult should defecate one to three times daily, and it should be done in a fast, effortless, and thorough manner. Nor- 88 Stay Away From Cancer
mal stools should be soft and long, shaped like a banana, with moderate wetness and no traces of offensive odour. In contrast, if you feel that you have a tough time having bowel movements, or the shape of your stools are abnormal, spherical, or accompanied with offensive odour, then your large intestines is most likely obstructed with impacted faeces and is af- fected with autointoxication. Good bowel movements are very important in this step of toxin expulsion, hence not only should the stools in your large intestine be cleared, your large intestines must also be bolstered with a plethora of friendly bacteria. None of these can be ignored. Third step in detoxification: nutrient absorption After detoxification and the expulsion of toxins, the cells are now cleansed and ready to take in nutrients. Many people like to listen to all kinds of medical advice and buy large quantities of a certain touted prod- uct, especially if it is advertised on television. However, Toni Steer, a public health nutritionist at the Medical Research Council Elsie Widdowson Lab- oratory in Cambridge said: “The idea that we absorb everything we eat just isn’t true.” Indeed, if the cells are not detoxified beforehand and toxins not expelled from the body, cells will continue to be inhabited by toxins and will reject even the best nutritional supplements. In addition, the human aging process will also reduce digestion and absorption functions by 70 to 90 percent. The third step emphasizes the enhancement of cellular nutrient absorbability and the degree of bioavailability. I have a habit of replenish- ing myself with digestive enzymes after each meal, so as to effectively break down the foods consumed and absorb the nutrients completely. Fourth step in detoxification: cell regeneration Our health is akin to a pearl necklace, and these pearls are the nu- trients indispensable to the human body, including all types of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids. Strategy 1: Enzyme Therapy Break dow n the doors of cancer w ith detoxification enzymes When I was still studying abroad, my father, who had to social- ize with his business partners and clients frequently, developed a habit of smoking and drinking. In the end, he was diagnosed with severe cirrhosis of the liver. Doctors said that he had no chance of recovery, and my family grieved upon hearing the bad news. Later, my father was introduced to a detoxification enzyme by a Japanese friend. It is said that the enzyme is used by Japan’s Kitasato University to cure numerous diseases. With so many astonishing success stories, my father decided to give it a try, and soon after began to use it regularly. In more than 30 years since he was di- agnosed with the disease, some of my father’s friends were also diagnosed with cirrhosis, and they died within a few years after developing the dis- ease. Only my father survived for more than three decades; he passed away at the age of 78. Dr. Edward Howell, a famous U.S. nutritionist, stated, “Enzymes may be the key factor in preventing chronic disease and extending the hu- man lifespan.” Scientists have discovered that there is no evidence of cancer in many wild animals, but animals held captive in zoos develop cancer, just like human beings. Investigations show that the animal feed used in zoos are chemically processed, resulting in enzyme deficiency. This is the same case with foods processed for human beings, particularly when the food is processed under high temperatures. With high heat, all the enzymes in the food are destroyed. However, wild animals obtain enzymes nearly every day, because enzymes are abundant in raw foods. Of course, I am not advocating eating meat raw like the way wild animals do. Theoretically, living in the wild and eating everything raw would most likely reduce your risks of cancer, but that would unfeasible, and other problems might arise as well. The more plausible method to re- plenish your body with enzymes would be to consume enzymes extracted via high-tech fermentation technology. You can attempt to create enzymes A Complete Strategy for Detoxi cation, Healthcare and Fighting Cancer: Seven Therapies 91
at home, but there are some risks involved as the process is not methodi- cally controlled. If there any problems surface in the fermentation process, carcinogenic bacteria may also be produced. In 1965, Japanese scientist Prof. Akira Osato successfully developed the first batch of detoxification enzymes and used it clinically to treat vic- tims of the “Chernobyl disaster”. He also made outstanding contributions during Tianjin’s fight against SARS, assisted AIDS patients in Thailand, and helped people with malaria in Papua New Guinea. Detoxification enzymes are not ordinary edible enzymes. They can rapidly break down heavy metal toxins such as lead, mercury, aluminium, and arsenic from the brain cells as well as the deepest part of the bones and human cells. Anyone suffering from environmental pollution can be treated with enzymes. Once, a local farmer accidentally drank some pesticides, but the toxic reaction was alle- viated after he quickly took some detoxification enzymes. Prof. Akira Osato receiving a letter of appreciation from the former President of the Soviet Union. In Japan, a 40-year-old woman consumed detoxification enzymes every day after she was diagnosed with gastric cancer and underwent gas- trectomy (surgical removal of the stomach). Two years went by, and her subsequent hospital visit showed no sign of recurrence. The doctor who told her that her end was near was surprised and hailed her case as a mir- acle. The woman was pleased and thought that her illness had been cured, so she stopped the enzyme therapy in order to save money. The cancer relapsed unexpectedly with a year after she stopped taking enzymes, me- tastasizing to the duodenum. Seeing this, her family decided to let her con- tinue with enzyme therapy. In the end, the woman lived with the tumour for 45 years and passed away at a grand old age. During these 45 years, she lived like a normal person and showed no cancer symptoms. 92 Stay Away From Cancer
The pow er of enzymes Scientists who conducted studies on the amazing detoxification enzymes discovered that these enzymes are able to enhance the natural self-healing ability of the human body. Once the detoxification enzymes enter into the body, the immune system will be stirred up, and the four major defenders (B-cells, T-cells, natural killer cells and macrophages) will be stimulated and activated. At the same time, cellular self-repair ability is rapidly enhanced. A research by Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez from the U.S. found out that detoxification enzymes could dissolve the protective mem- brane of cancer cells, thus breaking down their defensive walls and allow- ing white blood cells to head straight in until all cancer cells are eliminated. Many cancer patients try to enhance their immunity during treat- ment. However, treatment will not be very effective if your lymphocytes just attack persistently and blindly. The fact that cancer is now one of the deadliest diseases proves its lethality. Cancer cells are very smart; they can steal nutrients, especially sugar, from its victim to build solid defensive walls. The walls are the cancer cells’ nutrition as well as their protective membrane, which allows them to grow peacefully in their enclosure. To fight cancer effectively, one will need detoxification enzymes to break down their defensive walls. This is an essential step in the fight against cancer. After seeing so many cancer cases, I discovered a common problem among these patients, that is, their live cell analysis revealed large quanti- ties of plaque. The presence of plaque indicates that the patient has poor digestion, and is also a classic symptom of leaky gut syndrome. This shows that these patients are severely lacking enzymes in their bodies. The food they eat cannot be digested completely into absorbable nutrients; these un- digested substances flow into the blood vessels, forming plaque in the long run. Through enzyme therapy and the replenishment of enzymes, patients tend to show improvement in their illness. Strategy 2: Antioxidant Therapy Eliminating age-accelerating free radicals Shiny metalware that is left alone for some time will turn into use- less scrap metal covered with rust. An elastic rubber that is left alone for some time will lose its elasticity. An apple with its skin peeled away will turn brown. Fats such as butter and vegetable oils will turn rancid after be- ing exposed to the air for a period of time. We call this oxidation. Anything that is left alone for some time will undergo a certain degree of oxidation; it is the law of nature. The human aging process is also a form of oxidation, and the chief culprits in this process are free radicals. Where are free radicals hidden? Free radicals are the best buddies of nearly all diseases, making them the greatest enemies of human health. Be it aging, chronic disease, or cancer, free radicals always take part in creating the damage. This enemy is ubiquitous, as they appear anywhere electromagnetic radiation is present. Scientists have discovered that radioactive rays such as α-rays and γ-rays will ionize tissue elements in organisms, dividing water molecules in cells into free radicals. Researches have revealed that flight pilots, cabin crews and passengers who take frequent, long-haul flights are more prone to re- ceive free radicals as they are subjected to long-term exposure of cosmic ionizing radiation.1 Free radicals lurk in our cities, especially in polluted areas. For example, second-hand smoke, exhaust fumes from cars, smog caused by incineration, water sources polluted by industrial waste, land contaminat- ed by pesticides, and the manufacturing process of plastics are all places where free radicals appear. Besides these, free radicals are also hidden in food, including chemically processed, baked, smoked, deep-fried, and pre- served foods. Besides, trans-fats, mouldy food, and chemical drugs are all sources of free radicals too. Free radicals can also be produced on the job, surprisingly. Whenever you are feeling stressed, a large quantity of free radicals will be produced in the body. 94 Stay Away From Cancer
Free radicals are double-edged sw ords Free radicals are found in everyone’s body. Although free radicals may seem wicked and useless, they are actually a weapon used by your immune system. Free radicals are double-edged swords; they can be used to inflict damage on bacteria and viruses, but at the same time cause dam- age to human cells. In the process of phagocytosis, phagocytes release free radicals to kill pathogens. If too many free radicals are released during the process, human tissues will be damaged, resulting in autoimmunity or allergic reactions. Dr. Mitsutoshi Tsuruta, a Japanese expert on allergies, stated that many allergic symptoms can be alleviated if the amount of free radicals in the body are controlled. We are living in a world filled with free radicals, what should we do? There’s really no plausible way to hide, so we should strike back. In fact, God has already installed a “free radical eliminating system” in our body. Although we are all blessed with this system, the strength of it will be re- duced with poor living habits and aging, resulting in an exorbitant amount of free radicals and leading to a multitude of health problems. Anti-oxidation for regaining the lost years Many people are afraid of aging. This is especially so for women, who often agonize over the appearance of a few new wrinkles on their face. Most people spend time assuaging the marks on their face, but ignore the fact that their cells and organs are aging. This is why they fail to look young. I’ve seen many get transformed after stepping out of a beauty parlour. Their face changed radically, but the numerous, unsightly dark spots and wrin- kles on their limbs still give away their true age. Humans can live to the age of 120, barring any accidents or major external injuries. The age of 40 is supposed to be the prime of life, and should be the time when the body is in best shape. However, by the time A Complete Strategy for Detoxi cation, Healthcare and Fighting Cancer: Seven Therapies 95
most people today hit 40, they start to show signs of slowing down and begin to develop various chronic diseases. I once met a lady in her sixties who was frail and suffering from pain and illnesses. After sharing with her the secrets of anti-oxidation, she practiced it every day by replenishing herself with comprehensive antioxidants daily, exercising, eating until 70 percent full, and leaving fried and unhealthy foods out of her diet. When I met her again 10 years later, she looked so much better. Not only was she sporting less wrinkles, she was also full of energy and could drive a car and go on trips on her own. She is living proof that regaining the lost years is no longer a dream. Slow ing dow n the hands of time Everyone seems to be aging faster due to free radicals. A passage from the Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor regarding puberty age writ- ten 3,000 years ago stated that menstruation typically came around the age of 14, a time when girls go into regular menstruation cycles and start having the ability to conceive. What about girls today? Puberty is arriving earlier. Now children at the age of 11 are having their first period, and some have even become mothers at the age of 9. I admire General Huang Zhong of the Three Kingdom period very much. He was still able to fight a battle and slaughter enemies at a grand old age of 80. His eyesight was particularly good, given that he was a fa- mous marksman. In contrast, the 80-year-olds today have cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and stroke. Some have to be confined to a wheelchair, or must inch slowly with the aid of a cane. How many 80-year-olds can complete a 400-meter run without any problems, or are filled with vitality? Just a small portion of the age group. Every life has a clock. There is a time to grow up, to reach puberty, to deteriorate and to die. The current situation is that free radicals have ac- celerated this age clock. Think about this: Doesn’t early maturity translate to faster aging? This is something we should think about more. Cancer is also a sign of cellular aging. When cells age, reproduction errors and the 96 Stay Away From Cancer
chances for cell mutation also rise. As a result, early aging typically lead to an early development of cancer, and this is apparent today with an increas- ing incidence of cancer in young adults. Although the age clock is accelerated, we do not need to worry. Since the clock can be fast forwarded, it can also be slowed down, or even rewound back to the original prime condition. Dr. Bob Delmonteque is one such successful example. When he was 80 years old, he stated that his health condition was much worse 30 years ago. He was still at the prime of his life at the age of 80! He has never stopped exercising and never ceased anti-oxi- dation activities, sticking rigorously to a healthy lifestyle over the past 30 years. If he can do it, you can do it as well. The moment you step on this path of detoxification and healthcare, your Dr. Bob Delmonteque at the age clock will start to slow down. age of 80. A gift from God: antioxidant enzymes In my years of medical research, I have never stopped searching for the most effective antioxidant supplements. Travelling to numerous coun- tries, I tried all kinds of antioxidants, but I could not find one that was satisfactory. I knew that patients need antioxidants to get better results, but my inability to find or develop one was a psychological torture to me. I prayed over this matter and really hoped to find the best antioxidant weap- on, because God has placed these patients in my hands, and I must do my best to cure them. Later on, something miraculous happened. During one night when I was deep in my dreams, I heard a gentle voice saying, “My child, this is what you wanted to find”. After waking up, I could still remember my dream clearly. In my dream, the words “Functional Fermented Food” float- ed in the air. I could not understand what those words meant. Didn’t I pray for antioxidant supplements? Why am I being shown “fermented food”? A Complete Strategy for Detoxi cation, Healthcare and Fighting Cancer: Seven Therapies 97
As I had no idea what they meant, I placed the thought aside and left it alone. A few months later, a Russian scientist came to me and introduced the antioxidant enzymes she had developed. When I saw the supplements she introduced, I had to fight back my tears of joy. The words written on the box were the same words that I saw in my dream—Functional Fer- mented Food. God has answered my prayer. Since then, this antioxidant enzyme has proven itself to be the strongest weapon in my “armoury”, and has helped me treat many patients. The human body is a complex organism; therefore, a highly effective antioxidant supplement should be comprehen- sive, and encompass a variety of antioxidants instead of relying on a single type of antioxidants. The antioxidant enzyme in use contains over a hun- dred active nutrients, among them are superoxide dismutase, glutathione, carotene, co-enzyme Q10, bioflavonoid, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and dietary nucleotides. With such a comprehensive list of active nutri- ents, the enzyme can be easily absorbed by the body to yield favourable results. References 1) Schauer, David A., and Otha W. Strategy 3: Colon Cleansing Therapy Do you have impacted faecal matter? The digestive tract in an adult is about five to seven meters long. The muscles in the oesophagus have a smooth appearance, but near the stomach, folds start to emerge; down at the colon we have haustra, which give the colon its segmented look. God designed the digestive tract in this manner to ensure that food or residue will pass through slowly. It takes about 24 to 72 hours for food to be consumed, digested and completely absorbed in the digestive tract, before it be- comes stool and expelled out of the anus. If this timeframe is exceed- ed, stools left in the rectum and part of the large intestines will be considered impacted stools. The shape of impacted stools differ with each individual. Some stools are spherical, some appear to be dark brown and viscous, some are like sandy sediment, while some have an offensive odour. The majority of the population have old hardened faeces that are sim- ilar to crushed stones. These faeces accumulate in their large intes- tinal walls after years of usage, resulting in only a narrow passage in the intestinal tract. Older adults are more prone to this problem. An outstanding German surgeon once examined the large intestines of 280 bodies and discovered 240 of them had the conditions described above, representing a percentage of 86 percent. In anatomy, the colon is divided into the ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, and sigmoid colon. When dis- sected, the colon has an exterior appearance resembling a string of pearls, containing about 40 haustra. These haustra are the places where toxins tend to hide. Even with at least one bowel movement every day, we will still have problems eliminating stools deep with- in haustra. This is a common reason for the formation of impacted stools. The tragedy is that we are carrying a time bomb that most of us aren’t even aware of! USA Today reported that an average Ameri- can carries an average of 10 to 25 pounds (4.5 to 11.3 kg) of impacted A Complete Strategy for Detoxi cation, Healthcare and Fighting Cancer: Seven Therapies 99
faecal matter in their colon. How much impacted faeces is inside us? Modern medical research has proven that impacted stools are the source of all toxins in the human intestinal tract. These impacted stools are like rotten meat hiding in the body, producing a large quantity of toxins and weakening the immune system, thereby inducing all kinds of diseases and even going to the extent of endangering human life. Impacted stools will decay and ferment in the colon, creating a large amount of gas and at least 36 harmful chemical products including short chain fatty acids, lactic acid, butyric acid, carbon dioxide, pentam- ethylene diamine, methane, histamine, tryptamine, ammonia, etc. Hence, people with chronic constipation tend to have symptoms of fatigue and agitation, as well as bloating and gastric pain. Colon toxins will be absorbed by the large intestines and delivered to the whole body through the bloodstream, even deep into the cells. This results in pathological changes in the cells and finally causes all kinds of symptoms. 90 percent of all diseases and discomfort are directly or indi- rectly related to an unclean colon, states a research acknowledged by the U.K. Royal College of Physicians. Research from the Russian State Medi- cal University also revealed that toxins from auto-intoxication can only be removed through in-depth cell detoxification. Many clinical experiments conducted by Japan’s Kitasato University Hospital on patients suffering from auto-intoxication revealed that 90 percent of conditions could only be improved through in-depth cell detoxification. Why is it so toxic? Prof. Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, a Russian Nobel Laureate in Medicine, is the first biologist to promote the theory of auto-intoxication.1 He once conducted an experiment by feeding animals with decayed food from the human intestine. In the end, the animals contracted atherosclerosis, leading him to conclude that auto-intoxication shortens lifespan. When the intes- tines fail to discharge wastes in time, these wastes will accumulate and start releasing toxins. The toxins will spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream, leading to auto-intoxication and other chronic diseases.2 100 Stay Away From Cancer
Eight Symptoms Indicating Auto-Intoxication 1 Muscle aches and rheumatoid arthritis. 2 Nausea, hiccups, bloating, and gastric pain. 3 Slowdown of metabolism, fatigue, fat accumulation. 4 Liver overload and weakened liver functions, tendency to have mild fevers. 5 Unstable blood pressure, prolonged high blood pressure, or prolonged low blood pressure. 6 Slow cognitive functions, headaches of unknown rea- son, agitation, anxiety, and mood swings. 7 Allergic reactions such as urticaria, atopic dermatitis, and allergic contact dermatitis. 8 Constipation, bad breath, body odour, coated tongue, and foul-smelling stools. Colon cleansing commando: dietary fibre Dietary fibre is a substance that is indigestible by the human body. It is a type of carbohydrate that can only be broken down into energy by herbivores, something which humans cannot achieve. Therefore, dietary fibre was once misunderstood as an empty food that was unnecessary. It was only until the end of the 20th century, following the emergence of numerous health problems from low fi- bre and high calorie diets, that people started to place emphasis on the intake of dietary fibre. Since then, dietary fibre has been catego- rized into one of the seven essential nutrients. Everyone knows that an abundance of vegetables and fruits can replenish dietary fibre. The question is, how do you know that you are consuming enough dietary fibre? Dietary fibre can be divided into soluble and insoluble fibre. Cellulose is an important component of cell walls, and is represented by the solid fibre of vegetables, grains, A Complete Strategy for Detoxi cation, Healthcare and Fighting Cancer: Seven Therapies 101
