At that time SV was Introducing: Wayne Maslen Memorial award paying SA a large sum of money each year and in return, did not believe we were receiving benefits/value for our members. We saw that funds could be better invested directly back into the sport with the development of programs and direct support to the membership. After mediation between SV & SA funded by Sport & Recreation Victoria both organisations were in agreement that we would run totally independent to each other. In 2011 SV only offered membership to Victorians but after inquiries from roller derby clubs in Tasmania in 2012 we expanded our operations Australia-‐wide for all disciplines of Rollersports. Little did we realise in 2007 when Betty Bamalam one of the founding members of VRDL approached us for affiliation that 75 Roller Derby clubs would choose to join our organization in the future. We now also have interstate Speed, Roller and Inline Hockey clubs as affiliates. SPEED SKATING Jon Evans the Speed Chairperson has been the constant in this sport for well over a decade with providing athletes a pathway from development through to international competition. Jon has a dedicated team of volunteers who support Speed programs, which include Andy Finster and Kieran Garriga who are into their 9th year of running the Silver Junior Development program. The SV Speed Branch conduct a number of competitions which includes The Grand Prix Series, Southern Cross competition in November and The Ken Sutter Memorial Speed Skating Competition to be held on August 13th and 14th at Greaves Reserve Dandenong, the 30th Anniversary for this Comp! A Little History behind the running of The Ken Sutter Memorial Speed Skating Competition – Jon Evans On the 21st December 1982, an 18-‐year-‐old skater from the Noble Park Skating Club, died tragically at work as a result of an industrial accident. The friendship and esteem in which Ken was held by the skating community at large was clearly evidenced by the large number of skaters and officials who attended his funeral. hI gcdKbpIAwr HrF tneaooleerebe e h aiscsamofldnto chdoop iwnidin, viap or e c k n ato age l eaaecuhlslgvs tystw t aa lteh ei id oaa osl o tt ia ra lp thi sn f ,n bks aoy a i Kae t d ncee snc a t h y wte e e lVo g c uuI o hJ n naw nilu ea tsrbecet h t e vnwebeeht la e ldekoe iru a rdw ra oh eer l ttms oasryrie ,enh p f aat f, b k rae d o sw owKn hN nuid t tr rikie ao rnoCotisst, nnat a n b hw r c h ebnotn e a l oat edaefeeonwsrt mm sh h t fat 5l h P f e oth iiehtopp,e,amnr0ov er riiwerrremno0 e e ti krt h dbdhnn0i o e .a tit ya.eg s mm soa h s a sht I n tr atg c ha enh io at dkt owp emr oS np tosN ar c hewshpb rdoc o oienoeetkeewa m b n i p h re wsepo rlla aed p e ae Kru atatr h.er d c ur k Pess i nt epi gnKknn ra re ae eeo ga de’aerdtds s t k wt nh. a t t e e f s h trna’ i oSH rks h s aw io d .rk Gs a o e hi a f ana t tr t wb it fthitshgaitrhnrin iee henni oietgegev ued g nR dn feca so d e eo CP odrbctre t l, lhmro si ile u osd nieahifrxhbep gurn di am vp o , rer d inC aev rit i a in ni tp miattndlgyatihydoeuh t y a nin al o e ortl n ts a fe, c e . It was with respect to those attributes that at the 1984 Victorian Championships the Open Senior Men 5,000m track final was named in his honour as the “Ken Sutter Memorial”. A perpetual trophy in Ken’s name has been awarded each year since. In 1986 a competition known as the “Ken Sutter Memorial Speed Skating Competition” was introduced the purpose of which is twofold. Firstly, it serves to remind us of Ken and the contribution he gave to us all and our sport. Secondly, it is to acknowledge the skater who, over the course of the competition, best exhibits those qualities that were admired of Ken with a perpetual trophy suitably inscribed with the words “Ken Sutter - The Legend” BIG thanks to Bayside Blades who proudly support Skate Vic Speed Skating comps!
INLINE HOCKEY What a sight to see with stands being full with cheering spectators on the edge of their seats with the fast and furious competition of the Inline Hockey Australasian Club Championships run at Stadium 34 Moe Victoria over the Easter week-‐end. Now into it’s fourth year the event continues to grow in numbers with 40 teams battling it out in 5 divisions with 15 of those teams coming from interstate. Matt Beatson (Stadium 34 Manager) had a vision in 2013 to make this a premier event on the Australian Inline Hockey calendar which has been achieved. With Matt’s knowledge of the sport, marketing and business background he knew what was needed to make this happen and did it. Not only is Stadium 34 the biggest skating rink in Australia, it has the added benefit of being purpose built for inline hockey, a perfect venue to stage a national inline hockey tournament. It has been evidenced that events such as the Australasian Club Championships provide excellent exposure to the wider community of sports in their region. With the strong commitment of Stadium 34 to development of the sport, SV are confident that new players will be attracted to the game of inline hockey. KEEN TO FIND OUT MORE?! CLUB SNAPSHOT:VICTORIAN ROLLER DERBY LEAGUE We are thrilled to be heading to the Big O tournament again this year, and excited to announce that our B team will be also competing in some side scrimmages alongside us in America. Sending 2 teams internationally is exciting not only for VRDL but for the high level of roller derby across Australia. We are so proud of our achievement of third place at Champs last year and aim to defend this high ranking coming into the 2016 season. We have a newer team this year after some retirements and transfers and have been working hard on new strategy and innovative play. In preparation we have been training up to 4 days per week including up to 2 practice games over Saturday and Sunday. You definitely say goodbye to most of your weekends (and weeknights!) at this level but the energy in the team is that of excitement and dedication. I am so proud of the effort and support our team has shown each other this year -‐ it really helps us feel prepared as a unit for a tournament. My co-‐captain Bonnie Wykman (Mary Fagdalene) has been paramount in combining team culture and competitive play in our team ethos this season. We defeated the Mens Australian team as part of our seasonal build up -‐ and playing against our new coach Paul Campbell (Sausage Rolls). He is a phenomenal asset to our bench staff alongside our existing manager Matt Clanahan. Our amazing coach from last season Mick Swagger has joined the skater side this year and we are so thrilled to have her experience and tenacity on the track this year. Shaina Serelson joining the squad from Rose City has also been an amazing addition in both her on skates performance and innovative strategic creativity. We are going to be playing Texas, Bay Area, Rose City and Angel city at this tournament. A lot of these teams, including us, have had player movement, so we are expecting some tough games. These games are all important as they determine our ranking and seeding for playoffs. ESPN3 will be broadcasting our game against Rose -‐ it's so great to see Roller Derby continue to receive growth in the mainstream sports market. It will be a game to watch! We always have so much support from the Australian Roller Derby community when we play in America and want to thank everyone who is rooting for us at home. Your messages of support and encouragement really help us feel confident and determined to make Australia proud. The growth of teams and competition in Australia has developed so much over just the past few years and we can't wait to see that in action later in the year at TGSS! Keep an eye out for some upcoming bootcamps all across Australia. This is our main fundraising for the year and really helps us continue to do what we love! Wish us luck! Lauren Foote/Screw Barrymore (VRDL Captain)
