Scranton Hebrew Day School MESSAGEFROM THEPRESIDENT Mr.AlexGans Thispastschoolyearhasbeenanextremelyunusualone,hereinScrantonandalloverthe globe.Thefactthattherehasbeenanylearningandenthusiasm amongourstudentsis somewhatmiraculous.Ofcourse,wemustthankHashem forthis‫חסד‬throughoutthese lastfew months.Iwould liketothankcertainindividualswhohavebeen‫שלוחים‬of Hashem inhelpingtobringaboutthismiracle. Firstly,atremendous‫יישרכח‬tothe“captain ofourship”–RabbiNosson Adlerfor keepingtheschoolrunningduringthesedifficulttimes.Hehasdoneanoutstandingjob in ensuring cooperation between the schooloffice,teachersand students.He has accomplishedthisfrom theschoolbuilding,hishomeinN.J.andhiscar,inbetweenthose twoplaces. ThankyoutoRabbiDovidRosenbergwhohassomehow managedtocontinuetoraise muchneededfundsfortheschoolwithoutthebenefitofhisusualpersonalapproach. ThankyoutotheSHDSofficestaffforworkingunusual,longhoursandperformingduties beyondtheirjobdescription.ThankyoutotheRebbeim,Morosandteachersforteaching from makeshiftlocations,atunusualtimesanddealingwithchildrenwhoaresomewhere intheirhousesinsteadofaclassroom.Thankyoutotheparentbodyfordoingtheirbestat keepingtheirchildrenmotivatedandfocused. Iwouldliketorecognizethisyear’sawardeesstartingwithmydearcolleagueandfriendformany years,RabbiDovidRosenberg.Hedevotes100% ofhimself,hisheartandsoul,forthepast40years totheSHDS.HiscontributiontotheschoolisunparalleledandIam veryhappytoseehim being honored. Theschooliscompleting 4cyclesof“chai”yearsofproviding a comprehensive“LimudeiKodesh”and“LimudeiChol”program aswellas providing,alongwiththeirfamiles,afirm foundationforlivesas‫שומריתורה‬ ‫ ומצוות‬we have alumni who are parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents!!Thisiseverything thatthe founding fathers(and mothers)whoworkedsohardtoestablishtheDaySchoolwanted! Imyselfam celebrating40yearsofservicetotheDaySchool.Thefirst stagewasthatofaRebbefor18years,whereIwas‫זוכה‬toteachhundredsof ouralumniandwillalwaysfeelatremendous‫סיפוקהנפש‬from.Eachofthose alumniisextraspecialtome! Thenextstageof22yearshasbeenintheadministrationoftheschool.I heardavortfrom HaRavMatisyahuSalomon‫שליט\"א‬earlyoninthisjob thatIpresentlyfindmyselfin.Hesaidtoagroupofusadministrators,“If youwanttosee‫(השראתהשכינה‬therevelationofG-d’sspirit)inaninstitution, lookinthebusinessoffice!”Ihavebeenprivilegedtowitnessthiscountless timesinmyyearshere!Iwanttothankallmycolleagues(specialshoutout toRabbiAdlerandR’YitzchokElchonon),Mr.AlexGansandtheBoardof Directors,allofoursupporters(includingnumerousalumni)and ‫אחרוןאחרון‬ ‫חביב‬mywifeandchildrenfortheirloveandsupportovertheyears. IwillendwhereIbegan.In1978,a“YeshivaBochur”wasaskedtosubat SHDS.The principalatthe time took an active interestin him and encouragedandguidedhim,ultimatelyaskinghim tobeaRebbeandthen hissuccessor.Thebochurisme.Theprincipalis‫הרביצחקבןרפאלאליעזרזצ\"ל‬, RabbiYitzchokWerbin.Iam eternallygrateful.

Scranton Hebrew Day School RabbiSholemHorowitz GUESTOFHONOR FIRSTGRADUATING CLASS–1954 ThecommunityofScrantonwasblessedearlyonwithseveralwonderful frum familieswholaidthegroundworkforthemagnificent‫קהילה‬wehave today.Oneofthesefamilies,theHorowitzes,werepartandparcelofwhat madeScrantonsospecial. Allthroughtheyears,downthroughthegenerations,wehavebeen‫זוכה‬to theirspecialtalentsinourhumbleneckofthewoods.ThelegendaryShirley Ganz‫ע\"ה‬passedawayandDr.DuddyandJudy,‫ שיחיו‬leftScrantonfor Monseyafew yearsbackandwewereleftwithoutaphysicalpresenceof Horowitzes.But,oh,how thememoriesremainandthemelodieslinger. R'Sholem,the‘baby’ofthefamily,hasbeenasuccessfulRabbiand therapist,foralongtimeinPhillyandnow inToronto.Thathe,amember ofthefirstgraduatingclassoftheSHDS,classof’54,agreedtobehonored thisyear,bespeakshisloyaltyanddevotionto‫תורה‬and‫מסורה‬andvery muchtotheScrantonHebrewDaySchool.Wethankhim soand wishhim andhiswifecontinued‫נחת‬from theentireclan andthegoodhealthtoenjoyit. Withhisfirstvideo,producedin1998forour50thAnniversary, Abishbeganayearlyeffortthathasbroughtjoy,laughterand tearstoallthosefortunateenoughtohaveviewedthem.Hisstill photosofallourstudentsandparticularlyeachgraduatingclass arememorablekeepsakes. Soundslikeafairytale,right?No,justtheamazinglywonderfulyetnormal, everydaylifeofSam & MildredHarris.Theywereacouplewhomadethe humdrum ofexistenceintosomethingexcitingandmeaningful.Withlotsof ‫סעייתאדשמיא‬andtheirownwonderful‫זכויות‬,theyfashionedforthemselvesan accomplishedlife.Theywere‫ראשוראשוןלכלדברשבקדושה‬,generouslysupporting thefoundationsofScrantonthatmadethecitywhatitistoday.From theJewish FederationtoYeshivaBaisMoshe;from MachzikehHadasto,ofcourse,our school.NothinginourJewishcommunitywouldlookthesamewithoutthe leadershipoftheHarrises.Sam wasverymuchthe“goto”personifproblems arose.Hewasbelovedbyall;somuchso,thathisreputationformenschlichkeit andehrilchkeitandjustplaingood-guydecency,openeddoorsthatwereclosed toothers.
