Swami Vivekananda has been an eternal sourceof inspiration for the people of all ages, races, beliefs and belongings. His utterings are so verypower-packed that they have the potential toenergize a fatigued mind, shake off a lethargicbody to rise in action and awaken a desolatesoul seeking salvation.A small booklet titled ‘Thoughts of Power ’containing a compilation of his quotes that wasgifted to me during my student-years by SwamiHarshananda of RIMSE, Mysore, has been mycherished possession for over three decadesnow and it has been the go-to companion for meat times of despair when I needed confidence, courage and inspiration the most.It is in all earnestness to pass on the inspiration Ihave always been bestowed upon by theimmortal words of this eternal guru that I bringout this small booklet to you.Gratefully,Bharath GopalanIdeatorꚘ «☼»

Hold the idea, ―I am not the mind, I see that Iam thinking, I am watching my mind act,‖ andeach day the identification of yourself with thethought and feeling will grow less, until at lastyou can entirely separate yourself from the mindand actually know it to be apart yourself. When this is done, the mind is your servant tocontrol as you will. When the mind is conquered, he has reachedthe highest stage. (8:48) «☼»

Take up one idea. Make that one idea yourlife; think of it; dream of it; live on that idea.Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part ofyour body be full of that idea, and just leaveevery other idea alone. This is the way tosuccess, and this is the way great spiritualgiants are produced. (1:177) «☼» .

Stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the wholeresponsibility on your own shoulders, and knowthat you are the creator of your own destiny. Allthe strength and succor you want is withinyourselves. Therefore, make your own future.Whatever you think that you will be. If youthink yourself weak, weak you will be; if youthink yourself strong, strong you will be.Be strong, my young friends; that is myadvice to you. You will be nearer to Heaventhrough football than through the study ofthe Gita. These are bold words; but I haveto say them, for I love you. This is the great fact:Strength is life; weakness is death;Strengths is felicity, life eternal, immortal;weakness is constant strain and misery, weakness is death. «☼»

We are responsible for what we are, andwhatever we wish ourselves to be, we have thepower to make ourselves. If what we are now have been the result ofour past actions, it certainly follows thatwhatever we wish to be in future can beproduced by our present actions. (1:31) «☼»

The bottom of a lake we cannot see, becauseits surface is covered with ripples. It is onlypossible to catch a glimpse of the bottom, when the ripples have subsided, and thewater is calm. If the water is muddy or isagitated all the time, the bottom will not beseen. If it is clear, and there are no waves,we shall see the bottom. The bottom of thelake is our own true Self. (1:202) «☼»

Knowledge is inherent in man; no knowledgecomes from outside; it is all inside…We say Newton discovered gravitation; wasit sitting in anywhere in a corner waiting forhim? It was in his own mind; the time cameand he found it out.All the knowledge the world has ever receivedcomes from the mind; the infinite library of theuniverse is in your own mind. The externalworld is simply the suggestion, the occasion, which sets you to study your own mind.(1:28) «☼»

The monkeys of Varanasi are huge brutes andare sometimes surly. They now took it into theirheads not to allow me to pass through theirstreet, so they howled and shrieked and clutchedat my feet as I passed. As they pressed closer, Ibegan to run, but the faster I ran, the fastercame the monkeys and they began to bite at me.It seemed impossible to escape, but just then Imet a stranger who called out to me, \"Face thebrutes.\" I turned and faced the monkeys, andthey fell back and finally fled. That is a lesson for all life — face the terrible, face it boldly. Like the monkeys, the hardshipsof life fall back when we cease to flee beforethem. If we are ever to gain freedom, it must beby conquering nature, never by running away.Cowards never win victories. We have to fightfear and troubles and ignorance if we expectthem to flee before us. «☼»

The great secret of true success, of truehappiness, is this: the man or woman who asksfor no return, the perfectly unselfish person, isthe most successful. So help whenever you can, but mind what yourmotive is. If it is selfish, it will neither benefitthose you help, nor yourself. If it is unselfish, itwill bring blessings upon them to whom it isgiven, and infinite blessings upon you, sure asyou are living. «☼»

If you think you are bound, you remainbound; you make your own bondage. If youknow that you are free, you are free thismoment. This is the knowledge, knowledgeof freedom. Freedom is the goal of allnature. (2:462)We are free if we would only believe it, onlyhave faith enough. You are the soul, freeand eternal, ever free, ever blessed. Havefaith enough and you will be free in amoment. (6:93) «☼»

If there is one word that you find coming outlike a bomb from the Upanishads, bursting likea bombshell upon masses of ignorance, it is theword ―fearlessness‖. And the only religion thatought to be taught is the religion of fearlessness.Either in this world or in the world of religion,it is true that fear is the sure cause ofdegradation and sin. It is the fear that bringsmisery, fear that brings death, fear that breedsevil. (3:160)Be not afraid of anything. You will domarvelous work. It is fearlessness that bringsheaven even in a moment «☼»

It is the cheerful mind that is persevering. It isthe strong mind that hews its way through athousand difficulties. It is our own mental attitude which makes theworld what it is for us. Our thought makethings beautiful, our thoughts make things ugly. The whole world is in our own minds. Learn tosee things in the proper light «☼»

In the world take always the position of thegiver. Give everything and look for no return.Give love, give help, give service, give any littlething you can, but keep out barter. Make noconditions and none will be imposed on you. Letus give out of our own bounty, just as God givesto us «☼»

The ideal of faith in ourselves is of the greatesthelp to us. If faith in ourselves had been moreextensively taught and practiced, I am sure avery large portion of the evils and miseries thatwe have would have vanished. He is an atheist who does not believe in himself. The old religions said that he was an atheistwho did not believe in God. The new religionsays that he is an atheist who does not believe inhimself. If you have faith in all the three hundred andthirty millions of your mythological gods, and inall the gods which foreigners have now and againintroduced into your midst, and still have nofaith in yourself, there is no salvation for you. «☼»

There is a pretty Indian fable to the effect that ifit rains when the star Svâti is in the ascendant, and a drop of rain falls into an oyster, that dropbecomes a pearl. The oysters know this, so theycome to the surface when that star shines, andwait to catch the precious raindrop. When adrop falls into them, quickly the oysters closetheir shells and dive down to the bottom of thesea, there to patiently develop the drop into thepearl. We should be like that. First hear, thenunderstand, and then, leaving all distractions, shut your minds to outside influences, and devoteyourselves to developing the truth within you....Take one thing up and do it, and see the end ofit, and before you have seen the end, do not giveit up. He who can become mad with an idea, healone sees light. «☼»

To succeed, you must have a tremendousperseverance, tremendous will. ‗I will drink theocean‘, says the persevering soul, ‗at my will, mountains will crumble up.‘ Have that sort ofenergy, that sort of will; work hard and youwill reach the goal. (1:178)Never think there is impossible for the soul. Itis the greatest heresy to think so. If there is anysin, this is the only sin- to say that you areweak, or others are weak (2:308)Never say, ‗no‘; never say, ‗I cannot‘, for youare infinite. Even time and space are asnothing compared with your nature. You cando anything and everything, you are almighty.(2:300) «☼»

Never mind failures; they arequite natural, they are the beautyof life – these failures. Whatwould life be without them? Itwould not be worth having if itwere not for struggles. Wherewould be the poetry of life? Nevermind the struggles, the mistakes.I have never heard a cow tell alie, but it is only a cow- never aman. So never mind thesefailures, these little backslidings;hold the ideal a thousand times;and if you fail a thousand times, make the attempt once more. «☼»

All love is expansion, all selfishness iscontraction. Love is therefore the only law of life.He who loves lives, he who is selfish is dying. Therefore love for love's sake, because it is theonly law of life, just as you breathe to live. With love, there is no painful reaction; love onlybrings a reaction of bliss; if it does not, it is notlove; it is mistaking something else for love. When you have succeeded in loving yourhusband, your wife, your children, the wholeworld, the universe, in such a manner that thereis no pain or jealousy, no selfish feeling, then youare in a fit state to unattached. «☼»

Do you know how much energy, how manypowers, how many forces, are still lurkingbehind that frame of yours? What scientisthas known all that is in man? Millions ofyears have passed since man came here, and yet but one infinitesimal part of hispowers has been manifested. Therefore, youmust not say that you are weak. How doyou know what possibilities lie behind thatdegradation on the surface? You know butlittle of that which is within you. Forbehind you is the ocean of infinite powerand blessedness.Realize your true nature. That is all thereis to do. Know yourself as you are - infiniteSpirit. That is practical religion.Everything else is impractical, foreverything else will perish. «☼»
