AIT and Caste system: The WMD created by the west to loot and convert the Bharat. Sunil Thummala, MD MBA (Neurologist, Yoga teacher, Freelance writer, and Amateur photographer) “Sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.”  Friedrich Nietzsche “It’s Easier to Fool People Than It Is to Convince Them That They Have Been Fooled.”  Mark Twain. “Prejudice is poison, fed to us from an early age by our families, religions, and societies.” Sadhguru In this article author describes how colonizers willfully misrepresented native traditions, created false narratives, and imposed AIT and Caste system to destroy social, economic, and cultural fabric of the Bharat (aka India) society. Author describes this part of history in straight language without any sugarcoating or whitewashing of facts. Some readers may find such facts indigestible or harsh. Reader is advised to proceed without any bias or prejudice. The two reasons British and other invaders came to the Bharat were to loot and convert. For a small number of European people to come into the Indian subcontinent and enslave a massive population they needed a clear strategy. The strategy they employed was “divide and rule”. Once colonial rule was established the goals of loot and convert were easier to accomplish. To divide people they systematically weakened the underlying social, cultural, and economic fabric of the Bharat society by introducing the now debunked “Aryan Invasion theory” (AIT) and imposing the “Caste system”. In this article author will talk about how Europe used these two powerful weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to further their agenda. To impose AIT and Caste system onto India they willfully distorted the existing system and portrayed the existing ideas in a poor light. By doing so they weakened the foundational ideas holding the Bharat society together for many thousands of years. To understand these facts one has to first understand two major concepts, Varna and Jati. Varna and Jati are social, economic, genetic, geographical, and cultural ideas that are applicable to every human society. In fact such classifications are seen in every living society, for example an ant colony has a queen ant, drone ants, and many worker ants. Each has a unique role to play for the proper functioning of its colony. Similar systems exist in other animal societies as well. Humans, with their higher intellect, are the unique species that took the best advantage of this natural system for their overall wellbeing. 3

Varna Varna is based on the occupation of an individual within the society. As we’ll see below Varna is neither a race nor a caste. This system existed from the time immemorial in every human society. An individual of a society will belong to one of the four Varnas depending on the predominant occupation performed by an individual. Sacred text Bhagavad Gita mentions that “gunas” and “karmas” of an individual determine Varna. It’s important to note that “gunas” are a product of karmas in the current and past lives. School counselors use this concept of “guna” and expected “karmas” to advise a student regarding appropriate professions for a student. Students who choose professions consistent with “gunas” will have higher job satisfaction, better job performance, and enjoy their profession. On the other hand students who choose professions inconsistent with “gunas” will end up having lower job satisfaction, poor performance, and end up quitting. No Varna is considered superior or inferior. The individuals in each of these Varnas work in synchronization for the wellbeing and development of the society. Author argues that without such categorization human societies wouldn’t have flourished and reached the level they are at now. The four Varnas (categories) are Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Shudras and Vyshyas. Brahmins are the intellectual members of a society. They are the individuals with the highest knowledge in their field of expertise. They have mastered their field of expertise and are in a position to advance their field of study. They are in a position to teach as they have mastered their specialty. Due to this category of people science and technology flourishes and advances. This category includes PhDs, philosophers, prophets, “yogis”, “acharyas”, “gurus”, “rushis”, and scientists. Examples of prominent people in this category include Einstein, Tesla, Galilio, Thoreau, Tagore, Buddha, Jesus, Vivekananda, Bhaskaracharya, Patanjali, Sadhguru, Sri Sri, Baba Ramdev etc. 4

Kshatriyas are the people who fight for protection and betterment of a society. This category includes police officers, military personnel, lawmakers, community leaders, social activists, and all security personnel of a society. Without these people there can be lawlessness in a society. This group of people also helps in improving social and cultural fabric of a society. Individuals like Washington, Obama, Trump, Biden, Modi, Nehru, Bose, Krishna, Shivaji, Gandhi, Mandela, MLK etc. can be considered as Kshatriyas. Vyshyas are a category of people who create an economy. They establish and run businesses. They create jobs and employ specialists and various skilled employees called Shudras. People like Bezos, Musk, Zuckerberg, Ambani, Tata etc. are examples of Vyshyas. Most members, almost 75%, of society belong to the category of Shudras. The members of this Varna have some basic and advanced skills that are necessary to perform jobs in various industries. They work for their families in the economy. They are the backbone of every society. Doctors, nurses, engineers, farmers, electricians, plumbers, construction workers, priests (“pujaris”) etc. come in this category. North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is essentially a detailed classification of industries in which individuals belonging to this Varna are employed. Reader might be surprised to notice that there is no such Varna or Jati as “dalit” or “untouchable” as is often quoted in western discourse about the Bharat society. These terms simply imply that when someone, from any of the Varnas or Jatis, has done an act that poses an infection or health risk to other individuals then such a person has to maintain a social distance until they are clean. Europeans, missionaries, and now western scholars have willfully misrepresented this idea as something unfair to split the Bharat society, show its practices as something superstitious and illogical, and to further their agenda of loot and convert. Of note, we are doing the same thing “social distancing” during this Covid19 times and calling it as science. 5

As we have seen in the above paragraphs each category has certain unique roles to play in the society. An individual may belong to a category at one point in life and may move to another category at another point in life when one’s role in society changes. Example, Mr. Elon Musk is a scientist (Brahmin category) to begin with and now he is a businessman (Vyshya category) running Tesla, a multibillion dollar business employing thousands of people. The category an individual belongs to is based on one’s profession, not by birth in a specific family. It can, however, be argued that if a child adapts the profession of one of his parents then the chances of one excelling in that field are far higher as he most likely has an earlier start in that field. Hence we often see a doctor’s child chooses medical field as his/her profession and so on. 6

Jati Jati is based on genealogy, lifestyle, and geography one lives in. Jati is neither a race nor a caste. Jati can change if there is a change in the geography, times, lifestyle, or belief system even if no change has happened in genealogy. People living in a specific geography at a certain time sharing some common values and lifestyle most likely have similar genetic expression and all these people are grouped under one Jati. Certain Jatis may be prone to certain diseases and may be immune to other diseases. By knowing the Jati of an individual one can understand his predispositions to specific diseases. Also by knowing the Jati of individuals one can understand their belief systems and thus can be respectful when transacting with them. Within a Jati there can be many “Gothra”. Individuals are advised not to marry within the same “Gothra”. Although ancient Bharat society didn’t use specific words such as “genes” or “autosomal recessive diseases” they had similar idea as modern medical science and genetics which confirm that marrying someone who is a close relative increases chances of autosomal recessive diseases in the offspring. Discussion of “Gothra” is beyond the scope of this article. A lot of information about a person can be understood once these concepts of parents’ history, Gothra, and Jati are understood. 7

It’s important to note that individuals in the same Jati may belong to different Varnas and people in the same Varna may come from different Jatis. An individual’s Varna and Jati are not fixed but change when there is a migration, changes in lifestyle, or occupation. Even prior to British colonization there were many Jatis in the same Varna. Example: Long time ago people of Reddy Jati were Kshatriyas. Many Reddy Jati people nowadays are Shudras, Vyshyas, and Brahmins as well working as world renowned business persons, professors, scholars, and scientists at various universities all over the world. With migration and changes in occupation and lifestyle some Reddy Jati people may evolve into another Jati. This is how the Varna and Jati systems were used in the Bharat subcontinent from the time immemorial for the well-being of all members of the society. Without exception, in some form or other, similar systems were, are, and will be used in every society of the world. Note that as physicians, when we are asked to take care of a patient, the first thing we always do is to understand a patient’s profession, genetic background, lifestyle, and the place where one lives. All this information is nothing but understanding one’s Varna and Jati. Understanding this helps a doctor to understand what a patient is susceptible to and immune to. By knowing this information a doctor can narrow down the diagnosis and order specific tests and treatments. This information also helps a doctor to advise a patient to make necessary changes to protect them from certain diseases and improve health. 8

AIT and Caste system: Loot With this background we’ll now proceed to understand how Europeans, who invaded the Bharat, distorted this Varna and Jati system to create divisions and hatred in society to further their agenda. Their first goal to rule a massive population was to divide the society into 2 major fragments. They achieved this by introducing and propagating AIT with the help of scholars like Herbert Risley, Max Mueller, Christian Lassen, and Hermann Oldenberg. They called Indians living in the northern part of the Bharat as Aryans and those living in the southern part of the Bharat as Dravidians. By using AIT theory they pitted one against other thus creating animosity among Indians who were living harmoniously for many thousands of years. This trick immediately weakened the Bharat’s mental strength by half. The thing that is holding the Bharat society together for many thousands of years is spiritual humanism (“vasudaika kutumbakam”) and pluralism (‘ekam sath vipra bahuda vadanthe”) embedded in their lifestyle and literature. To further weaken the Bharat society colonialists and missionaries brought in scholars from Europe to misinterpret and willfully misrepresent the knowledge, ideas, and morals contained in the Bharat literature. To further divide the society into smaller fragments they imposed the “Caste system” onto the homogenized Indian society. Note that the concept of caste was alien to the Bharat society until Europeans entered India. The English word “caste” was derived from the Portuguese and Spanish idea of “casta”, which means race or breed. This idea of caste system was based on the concept of “lords and commons”, which in turn is based on the “financial and power status” of an individual, prevalent in the British society. They created upper caste and lower caste for the Indian context. Within these two broad caste categories they further created many small castes. They then forced Indians to select a caste, which they will be stuck with for the rest of their life. British then pushed this caste identifier to be ingrained into the Indian minds and society. Once people started identifying with a rigid caste, rather than a flexible Varna and Jati that existed till then, British then put one caste against another, enticing some castes with rewards and punishing others with penalties and attacks. This created deep divisions in the Bharat society that was until then living harmoniously for many thousands of years. Social, cultural, and economic fabric of the Bharat society took a major dive after this turning point. This was a grave moment in the Bharat history, which is often neglected in modern history textbooks written by Europeans and west trained Indians. Graph below (source: Columbia Press and HUA) shows the estimated GDP share of India, UK, and USA over the last 2000 years. One can clearly see a sudden degradation in India’s GDP share after European invasion. This coincides with the sudden steep rise in the wealth of the UK. It is estimated that approximately $45 trillion (USD equivalent) wealth was looted from India by the UK during the British rule. This led to widespread unemployment, poverty, and deaths all over India. 9

One such consequence of looting was the genocide of 3-10 million Indians (estimates vary by different sources) during the intentionally induced Bengal famine of 1943. Madhushree Mukherjee in her book “Churchill’s Secret War” confirms claims made by various historians and scholars about Churchill’s role in this genocide. In her book she writes “A dogged enemy of Hitler, resolute ally of the Americans, and inspiring leader through World War II, Winston Churchill is venerated as one of the truly great statesmen of the last century. But while he has been widely extolled for his achievements, parts of Churchill's record have gone woefully unexamined. As journalist Madhusree Mukerjee reveals, at the same time that Churchill brilliantly opposed the barbarism of the Nazis, he governed India with a fierce resolve to crush its freedom movement and a profound contempt for native lives. A series of Churchill's decisions between 1940 and 1944 directly and inevitably led to the deaths of some three million Indians. The streets of eastern Indian cities were lined with corpses, yet instead of sending emergency food shipments Churchill used the wheat and ships at his disposal to build stockpiles for feeding postwar Britain and Europe” Below is a quote of Winston Churchill who was the elected Prime Minister of the UK at that time which shows his intense hatred towards Indians and its Hindu civilization. It’s surprising to note that citizens of the UK elected this person as their leader again in 1951 despite this genocide committed against Indians. “I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion. The famine was their own fault for breeding like rabbits.” -Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the UK 1940–1945 and 1951– 1955. 10

AIT and Caste system: Convert Europe’s other goal for invading India was religious conversions. While colonialists were busy looting, missionaries were busy imposing their ideology onto the Bharat society. They together formed the two sides of the same coin created out of various decrees to loot, enslave, and convert societies all over the world. In one such decree, “Papal bull”, of 1493 AD the pope asserts rights to colonize, convert, and enslave societies of North America. It even justifies the enslavement of Africans. 12

Missionaries followed the same playbook in India they follow everywhere including Latin America, North America, Africa, and Asia. The task of religious conversions became easier once the poverty, divisions, and hatred they created in the Bharat society became widespread. Colonialists and missionaries provided enticements and benefits to those who converted to Christianity and punished those who didn’t. Portuguese inquisition in Goa is an example of their punitive strategy. Below is a depiction of such atrocity where in St. Francis Xavier, who for the first time, brought torture, violence, intimidation and terror to Goa to force native Indians to convert to Catholic Christians. This deeply fragmented the Bharat society became the foundation for the destructive colonial rule by Europe. St. Francis Xavier, who for the first time, brought torture, violence, intimidation and terror to Goa to force native Indians to convert to Catholic Christians (Source: https://www.goainquisition.info/2020/05/) 13

(Source: https://www.hindujagruti.org/hindu-issues/hatkatro-khaamb) “Hatkatro Khamb” means “cut hands pillar” in Goa stands as a harsh reminder of atrocities committed by missionaries on those who refused to give up their Hindu tradition. 14

Hindus that continued to practice Hindu rituals even after embracing Christianity were burnt in full public view. Source: https://www.goainquisition.info/2020/05/ Hatred against the Bharat culture was very visible in the works of many European scholars which formed the basis of Europeans understanding of the Bharat people. For example James Mill (1773–1836), a European historian and philosopher, in his famous work “The History of British India” wrote “in truth, the Hindoo like the eunuch, excels in the qualities of a slave”, the Hindoos were “dissembling, treacherous, mendacious, to an excess which surpasses even the usual measure of uncultivated society”, “in the highest degree conceited of themselves, and full of affected contempt for others”, “in physical sense, disgustingly unclean in their persons and houses”. 15

Western hatred towards the India’s Hindu civilization in the current period Although some words here and there have been changed to be “politically correct” and “socially pleasing” the hatred in the western psyche against the Bharat’s Hindu civilization has not changed and a similar narrative is still being taught in schools, colleges, and universities all across the west. Despite tremendous works by people like Gandhi, MLK, Nelson Mandela, Walter D Mingolo etc to decolonize people’s mindset a similar distorted hateful narrative is being propagated by universities, scholars, leaders, organized religious enterprises, main stream media, and outlets on the internet. A simple Google search of the phrase “caste system”, at the time of writing this article, yielded 62+ million results in 0.61 seconds with top results from BBC, Wikipedia, NYTimes, Britannica, HRW.org and others all describing this false narrative. Screenshot of Google search results -1 16

Screenshot of Google search results -2 It’s also important to note that many ideas, such as Yoga, Pranayama, Upavasa etc, native to the India’s Hindu civilization have been plagiarized and marketed with new names in the west without referring to the source of such ideas. Author feels that the root cause for such behavior is inherent hatred of west towards other traditions. Although colonialism in its most obvious brutal form has disappeared from the face of the earth it's still very much practiced by the west in a not-so-obvious form with similar implications and exploitation of less developed societies. The author advises readers to do their own independent research to understand the real history and not just blindly believe the one narrated by the colonizer about colonized and by the invader about invaded. “The truth is not for all men but only for those who seek it.”  Ayn Rand “Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” Chinua Achebe I’ll end with a quote from MLK: “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear” 17
