The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 2, 2023 Principal's Address Hello members of the Rossmoyne Senior High School community, It gives me great pleasure to present the Term 2 2023 Rossmoyne Quarterly. Term 2 has been very busy and this publication highlights many of the outstanding opportunities that your children have had throughout the term. The Quarterly, and our regular updates on Facebook, provide a snapshot of the wonderful events that occur throughout the term at Rossmoyne Senior High School. We have had Dance Concerts, Art Displays, Sporting carnivals, leadership activities and the recent outstanding Movie Marathon Music Concert. Of course, we have also had many curriculum based excursions, activities and events and the daily, outstanding teaching and learning programs that make Rossmoyne SHS a leader in the public school education system. We have recently welcomed some students from Germany on an exchange program and we will have some of our students heading to Germany towards the end of the year in a reciprocal arrangement thanks to the Goethe Institut, a partner in our school’s languages program. Last weekend two of our students headed to Germany for a two week immersive language program and there will be many more opportunities for our students in these types of programs as the year progresses. As the term comes to a close, I would like to thank our extremely dedicated staff across the entire school for their commitment to the education of your children. Our support staff, cleaners, gardeners, technical support staff and teachers all work together to ensure that the experience that your child has at Rossmoyne is a rewarding experience and helps to prepare them for their future beyond school. Thank you also to our students and their families for the ongoing support of our staff. Staff will resume school on Monday 17 July and, for students, Term 3 begins on Tuesday 18 July. Kind regards Alan Brown Rossmoyne Senior High School Principal

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 2, 2023 Homeroom Wrap-up Being inclusive and appreciating others through Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (G.E.M) were the focus of the Term 2 Homeroom program. Students kicked off the term by participating in Mindful May activities by completing mindful colouring in, mindful in nature, mindful breathing and yoga/meditation. Gratitude was expressed across multiple levels; personal, whole school and within year levels. Students reflected on someone they feel grateful for in the school and in their year groups. Students were encouraged to write a letter to the person they feel grateful for describing why they have gratitude towards them. After writing the letter students were tasked with the challenge of delivering this letter to the person and telling them in person. Empathy was displayed through the Push-Up Challenge and Bags of Hope. Conducted over a number of sessions students worked together to push-up for mental health awareness and to help those who need hope most. Homerooms competed to achieve the most push-ups, squats, or other active repetitions. Homerooms also decorated bags with messages of hope and collected items to fill the bags which will be donated to the Salvation Army who will distribute them to people who need assistance. The term wrapped up with some healthy inter-house competitions run by the House Captains. Different activities that promoted competition, connection and belonging were delivered across the homerooms. Students participated and competed for house and glory in Zumba, teamwork challenges, quizzes, tug of war, Pictionary, basketball, dodgeball and capture the flag. Congratulations to ROSS for winning the Term 2 House competition! Page 1

There are lots of great opportunities for students to win house points and help their House get to the top of the leader board. Page 4

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 2, 2023 Free Trip Winners We're not in Rossmoyne anymore! Your eyes aren't fooling you, these photos are of Rossy Year 11 students Lucas M. and Zachary P. enjoying a free trip to Japan! The pair scored the free tour by winning the '2022 Japan Travel Contest', collaborating with students from our sister schools in Japan and Taiwan to plan the trip and then convince competition judges that their itinerary was the best of the bunch. Japanese language students in Years 10 to 12 will have another chance to win a holiday when Rossmoyne takes part in the competition again in 2023. Omedetō (congratulations) Lucas and Zachary! Page 5

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 2, 2023 Picking Pathways Year 10 students spent the day exploring Year 11 and Year 12 pathway and course options at the Rossmoyne Careers Fair. Students heard from alumni and current Year 11 students at the Panel Sessions, they learnt about Rossmoyne's subject offerings at Learning Area Stalls, and they heard from industry representitives and tertiary education providers about different work and study options. This annual fair helps our Year 10s complete their future pathways workbook, which supports them to make informed choices for their final two years of schooling. Page 6

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 2, 2023 Skippers skip town Our Year 12 Outdoor Education students visited Shark Bay, putting their skippering and sailing skills to the test on 'Seatrek'. The group began preparing for the trip in 2022, when they completed their Recreational Skippers Ticket qualifications and learnt how to sail. The budding sailors then planned their ocean adventure, independently organising their food and personal basics - allowing them to 'beach hop' for 5 days and camp on a new shore for each night. The trek saw students lead and collaborate, applying nautical navigation skills to chart routes and plan their sailing or motoring legs off the coast of Denham, Dirk Hartog Island, and Boat Haven Bay. The group enjoyed swimming in crystal clear waters, sighting dolphins and dugongs, and (successfully) fishing for a feed of black snapper and flathead! Great to see our students building capabilities and facing up to challenges with respect, resilience and team work! Page 7

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 2, 2023 Number 1. Year 7 Mathematician! Every school-day morning and afternoon, coaches are facilitating training sessions for the 22 teams in our intraschool comp. Each coach puts in a whopping 60 to 120 hours of work throughout the year, running training and attending games. Their hard work also supports the school to send teams across to the Volleyball Australia Schools Cup on the Gold Coast each year. Many of our coaches are former students, and we're sending out a huge thank you to these coaches and the many other volunteers across the school who help our community to flourish. Page 16
