THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 4, 2021 WHAT’S INSIDE? The Rossmoyne Quarterly is a celebration of student aspiration and achievement. THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 4, 2021 PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS Welcome to the last Quarterly for 2021 and a chance for us to look back and reflect on the year that is ending. Through this edition we will be able to celebrate the many activities and opportunities that the students of Rossmoyne SHS have undertaken throughout another year of uncertainty. COVID has been another dominating feature this year and after some early issues we were able to get on with what was mostly a relatively normal school year. Students have been able to access a broad range of activities and we have been able to recommence some localised camps and excursions to enhance the learning opportunities for our students. We have been working on our new business plan throughout the year and I would like to thank the School Board, staff, parents and students for their input into the development of this roadmap for our future. There will be some exciting things happening at Rossmoyne in the future, keeping our school at the forefront of educational innovation in the state. This is just one of the many positives that 2021 has brought and I have been extremely proud of our ability to provide a safe and stable learning environment for our students. This Quarterly highlights the outstanding successes and achievements of our students. It highlights our school vision – Honour the Culture, Embrace Opportunity, Shape the Future. Thank you to all members of the school staff, the teachers, cleaners, gardeners, lab technicians and all of the support staff across the school for your efforts this year. You are the custodians of the Rossmoyne culture and you do such a great job of making sure that students have access and opportunity within their chosen pathways. Thank you to the parents and community members and especially the students of Rossmoyne SHS. While the staff are the custodians of the culture, you are future shapers that ensure the culture is respectful of the past but looking forward to the future. As we move in to the summer break we are entering uncertain times as borders will open and the pandemic that we have kept at bay enters our state. I hope that you are able to enjoy the break, stay safe and have a holiday that is filled with family, fun, food and festivities. I hope that your holiday memories are all happy and I look forward to hearing about them at the beginning of next year. Have a wonderful holiday break! THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 4, 2021 TERM 4 HIGHLIGHTS MATHEMATICS Australian Mathematics Competition On the 4th August this year, 263 Rossmoyne students sat the annual Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). This was a fantastic showing from those Mathematics students who were willing to challenge themselves with a series of problems that began with 20 questions that were intended to be directly familiar to students from their classroom experience. The later problems were more difficult and often in unexpected contexts. After a number of delays, due to Covid affected post and a computer marking error that needed to be rectified, we finally received our school results: • 7 Prizes; 1xYear 8, 1xYear 9, and 5xYear10. This puts these students in the top 0.3% in WA. • 29 High Distinctions; These students are in the top 3% in WA. • 88 Distinctions; These students are in the top 20% in WA. Congratulations to all students that accepted the challenge of sitting the AMC, to all the award winners, and particularly to our 7 prize winners. We look forward to next year’s competition being held on Wednesday 3rd August. WA Junior Mathematics Olympiad The Western Australia Junior Mathematical Olympiad (WAJO) was held over five days in October. All the Honours students from Years 7, 8 & 9, and six extension students were divided into 21 teams of four. First came the individual competition; two hours on a Thursday evening after school. The scores from each of the four team members were added together and subsequently added to the team competition score. This was held at UWA on the following Saturday morning. 84 students and five staff met up in the sunshine outside the library at UWA eager for the competition to begin. Separating into a number of different lecture theatres, the teams worked to produce solutions to a number of very challenging problems involving Egyptian Fractions. After the individual and team scores were tallied we learned that Team 15 (Ivy Cu, Sam Dickinson, Jamie Rogers, and Harrison Young) was our highest ranked team with individual awards of Credit, Distinction, Credit, and High Distinction respectively. Further Individual Merit prizes were awarded to Karthik Boddu and Ashley Yap for scoring highly in the individual section. Special mention must also be made of Evan Hee. Evan was awarded a prize by the Special WA Mathematical Olympiads Committee for his achievements throughout 2021. He was recognised for his selection to this year’s Selection School, a Bronze medal in the Senior Mathematical Contest, and an Honourable Mention in the Australian Mathematics Olympiad. These are all invitation-only events. Evan has also been invited to this year’s Summer School of Excellence, from which the Australian Olympiad team is selected. PAGE 12

THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 4, 2021 Year 9 Fashion & Fabrics A wonderful group of Year 9 students have spent most of the term sewing extraordinary dolls, as these dolls are going on a long trip away to KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. Some with large brown eyes, some with hair sticking out like stalks, some dressed in multi colours. But these dolls are extraordinary. Each one has been lovingly made by machining the body shape and clothes, plus hand stitched faces, all dressed in recycled fabrics and accessories. The dolls take this important journey to orphan children. The dolls bring delight to the children through play. This play may help the child with grief and loss. To own and play with their own doll encourages a child’s development in all spheres: physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual. “While making this doll I thought about what it would be like to be in the shoes of these children and their face when they receive Bublo (the doll) soon. I wish I could see the expression on these children’s faces to experience these handmade dolls.” Isabel PAGE 21

Following that, the Year 10s participated in the launch of the book “Fietje und Arti in Australien”, which features a comic story written by them as part of an online workshop they did with the Goethe Institut in Germany. Students were excited to receive copies of their book and enjoy celebratory German treats for lunch. All participating students and their teachers were invited to attend the launch of the book on an online Zoom call. Students were asked questions such as what motivated you to contribrute to the story? and You are now holding a book in your hand. Who would you like to show the book to? Chelsea Satriavi answered with “The idea of being able to accomplish something that we have never done before was a huge motivation.” and “I would show it to my two support systems, my family and friends, as cheesy as that sounds. My friends would be absolutely excited for me and would demand to see the book, despite being unable to read the comic! My family, namely my parents would be extremely proud to read the book and probably post about it on social media.” PAGE 25
