THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 3, 2021 WHAT’S INSIDE? The Rossmoyne Quarterly is a celebration of student aspiration and achievement. Released at the conclusion of each term, the Quarterly highlights curriculum-based achievement, spotlights students who are aiming high, and sums up all the action from the term that was. THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 3, 2021 PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS At Rossmoyne Senior High School we communicate with our community in many different ways. I have observed, that while there are many posts and emails about the many things happening at our school, The Quarterly gives us a chance to draw all of this information together for you. As Term 3 comes to a close, I am proud to present to you another edition of The Rossmoyne Quarterly packed with highlights and successes. As always, this serves as a celebration of student achievement, and an opportunity to recognise the brilliance that is Rossmoyne Senior High School. In this edition you will find a snapshot of the diverse range of events and activities that have occurred across the school. There are also many things happening in the background of the school at the moment, and I would like to take this opportunity to share some exciting plans for the school’s future. You may remember at the most recent election $35 million dollars was committed to new buildings at our school. I am pleased to report that the very early stages of this project are now progressing and architects have been appointed to commence the ‘design and development’ phase of the work. It is anticipated that this phase will be completed by late 2022 and that building will commence in late 2022 or early 2023. This project will provide much needed new facilities for the school. The next iteration of our School Business Plan has also been progressed by the School Board, in conjunction with school staff. The fresh plan will provide guidance and direction for our school over the coming years until 2025. It is a bold and aspirational document that will come into effect during Term 4 this year and set Rossmoyne up for continued excellence. As the school year draws to an end for our Year 12 students I would like to wish them well with their ATAR exams and look forward to officially farewelling them at their Valedictory Ceremony at the Perth Concert Hall in October. Many students have already received offers from Universities and many more will have thoughts on where their lives will be heading once school ends this year. Students, enjoy your journey and make sure that you stay curious, keep learning and enjoy the ride! Best wishes to all members of the Rossmoyne SHS community. THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 3, 2021 SARAH COSGRIFF CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF SARAH Year 8 Sarah Cosgriff has been shortlisted for the City of Canning's short story competition with her entry \"In the Clouds\" based on the 2021 Children’s Book Week theme, “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”. Sarah’s composition explores the endless possibilities available when we disconnect from toxic online platforms. Sarah was invited to attend a winner's presentation and morning tea on September 18. Keep it up Sarah! AN EXCERPT FROM ‘IN THE CLOUDS’ - BY SARAH COSGRIFF When breakfast calls, I’m pulled from my phone and my stomach grumbles. When did I last eat? I asked myself as I stumble out of bed. As I eat, I constantly remind myself of my weight, but my hunger and starvation kept crawling back to me. I leave my half-finished plate on the table and scroll through pictures and videos on my phone. I study the pictures of myself in ‘flattering lighting’ and take screenshots of the hundreds of likes that it got. The wave of messages kept flooding through, and I smiled at each one that praised my skinniness and beauty. I frowned at the few that told me I was overweight. I sighed and looked down at my growling stomach. They were right. “You have a problem. Put the phone down.” My sister orders after swallowing her mouthfuls of bacon. I wiped my forehead of sweat and turned around to face her. Her hand was outstretched, calling for my phone. I refused her, but that only seemed to make her more agitated. “Give me half an hour,” I compromised, but she snatched my phone, threw it up in the air abruptly and it hit the floor in a spectacular smash, with shards of glass being lodged in furniture. It was a challenge. I had done plenty of them online before, but this was too much. I couldn’t bear it. My eyes narrowed at the broken pieces, staring at the glimmer in the glass on the floor. I was screaming internally. My heart throbbed but I couldn’t let her win. I put on a brave smile where I hopped to my room, avoiding sharp wires and metal and ‘protective’ casing. The thought of not being able to use my phone sent chills down my spine. A metallic taste was in my mouth, and my stomach stirred. I reached for my laptop case, smiling as I pull out- nothing. It was all gone. The life that I’d built online had been destroyed, and I could do nothing. My first thoughts were always about what was on my phone. Every message, every like. But right now, I don’t stare at screens- I stare at sheets of paper. It looks alien, like it would jump out and take me far, far away, but it is still, still as stone. And my pen, finding it’s balance in my hand. Soon, it’s writing words for the first time in forever. And words come out so elegantly, not with a strained hand on my phone. I could only think about how effortlessly my hand moves in writing and how words came out of me. I was back in the old world. And I realised how wonderful it is to finally be out of the clouds. THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 3, 2021 CEXOT-CRUAR&RICULAR NAIDOC WEEK STARTS TERM Term 3 commenced at Rossmoyne with our NAIDOC Week. On the first day of Term 3, Year 9 student Cain Jones provided an Acknowledgment of Country over the PA system. This year's ‘Heal Country’ themed week also included a Welcome to Country by Dr Richard Walley, a NAIDOC afternoon tea, art sessions and the inaugural Staff Vs Students NAIDOC Week AFL match. VOLLEYBALL SHOWCASE In Week 8 our gym hosted a series of volleyball exhibition games arranged by the school community in support of Year 11, Lawson Read, who sustained a spinal injury earlier in the year. Competition between houses was fierce, and it was fantastic to have Lawson in attendance to see the action on the court. Lawson and his family have expressed gratitude to the school community and to Spinal Cord Injuries Australia for their support. AIME HOODIE DAY ENJOYED TOP: NAIDOC AFL, MID: VOLLEYBALL SHOWCASE, BELOW: AIME HOODIE DAY For the past 11 years AIME has utilised ‘Hoodie Day’ to highlight and educate people about the inequity experienced by young people who have been pushed outside the margins that exists in Australia and around the world. THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 3, 2021 CEXOT-CRUAR&RICULAR 2021 ROBOCUP JUNIOR STATE FINALS SEE STEM STRENGTHENED At the end of May, Rossmoyne Robotics Club participated in the WA RoboCup Junior State Finals competition at Curtin University. Our club secured second place for Western Australia in the Soccer Standard League category. RoboCup Junior Competition is a project-based educational initiative that spans through the state, national and international levels. In our category, the team built autonomous mobile robots that played soccer in a highly dynamic environment, mimicking an actual soccer field. Students designed, built, and programmed LEGO robots to compete against many formidable robot opponents. While RSHS celebrates the RoboCup competition success, we also celebrate our students' growth during the long and tedious preparation process. On this journey, teachers saw cooperation, resilience, persistence, endurance, motivation, ingenuity, and sheer talent. Meanwhile, they also had fun, laughter and formed new friendships. May this exceptional team experience serve as a guide to all our future undertakings; teamwork really matters. The RoboCup program is one great example of National STEM school education strategies in play. RSHS RoboCup team members for 2021 were Tommy Hu, Terrence Lau, Justin Tang, Long Feng, Alex Chen, Brandon Didsman, Vishwa Sabarinathan, Isabelle Tang, Matthew Yao and Shing Feng. Special thanks and best wishes to our two Year 12s, Tommy Hu SCAN TO VIEW and Terrence Lau who were the programmer and leading builder. Contributions from parents also provide the P&C the opportunity to continue to support several student areas including the Chaplain and Youth Worker and other health and well-being programs. Recent school infrastructure works, like the refurbishment of the School Gymnasium and an upgrade of the Performance Visual Arts Centre auditorium, were also supported by over $90,000 contributed by the P&C! THE ROSSMOYNE QUARTERLY - TERM 3, 2021 CEXOT-CRUAR&RICULAR DUKE OF ED CAMPERS STUDENT WRITE UP BY EVIE PEAK “At the end of week 6, a group of Duke of Edinburgh award participants trooped off into the hills for our ‘Adventurous Journey’. Part of the award, one of the four categories of skills, sports, community services and of course, adventurous journeys, we went on a three days two night hike around Wungong National Park and Serpentine Falls, camping for the nights at Manjadel Activity Centre. Lugging around 10kg+ packs, with all of our food, water, tents and supplies, it was a new experience for many, and ended with many tired and sore hikers. We were accompanied by Mr Coker, Ms Bolt and Mr Williams, who also facilitated team games, first aid training and orienteering activities which were key to our completion of our practice journey, as well as a super fun 240m long flying fox at the campground! We can’t wait for our qualifying journey when we’re heading up to the Bibbulmun track for more hiking! If you’d like to get involved in this internationally recognised challenge, do some research or see any of the Duke of Edinburgh teachers around school.” BACK TO SCHOOL PARENTS The families of our incoming Year 7 cohort of 2022 visited our school in Week 3, when they were able to meet some school staff, orientate themselves at school and even take a ‘taster’ high school class. The purpose of the day was for parents to acquaint themselves, and learn a little more about what high school will be like for their children in Year 7 next year. PAGE 37
