It journeys through a sleepless night, conquering the semi-conscious moonlit world and the retrospective nature of the night. The personal stories of twenty experts and enthusiasts in astronomical fields construct the narrative and its landscapes — coffee tables, paper planes, corridors, among other things. 58 The Cup Open Youth: Live Action In a surreal tableau, a man with a brewing machine for a head, discontent with the bland taste of the brew from his own body, attempts to do what he can to improve its flavour. The Cup is a meditation on being in the world, upon the flattening out of life as we know and image it during the coronavirus pandemic. It was shot and produced while the filmmakers were confined to their home during the lockdown period in Singapore. Yong prepares longevity buns in his kitchen, then brings them to the temple as offerings to the God of Heaven. On the bus there, he encounters a young boy who unwittingly causes him to look back on his life with bittersweet nostalgia. Fluctuating between memories of love and loss, Yong finally gathers a sense of acceptance for his life and impending death. Trying to secretly record audio evidence of the abuse on his phone, we experience the class play out from his perspective as Beatrice picks on both AZIRAH, another student in the class; and him. As the class progresses, so does her aggressive treatment towards them. Alan is pushed to his limits, when his attempt at recording the evidence doesn’t go as planned. As she does groceries with her grandmother, she longs for her mother. She asked her grandmother if she could call her but she was rejected. Layla quietly sobs into her pillow at night, that her grandma notices how fondly she misses her mother. Her grandmother called her mother with the international prepaid card that she secretly bought. She drags along her mildly reluctant best friend, Ruth, on the adventure. What they find might be less impressive than the advertisements make it out to be. With the pressure of sending money back home in India to feed his family, he does the unthinkable to salvage the situation. 68 68 partitions Open Youth: Documentary partitions is a short observational documentary that draws on photographs, state documents, audio recordings and footage of domestic spaces and routines, to tell a story of Sindhi migration following the Partition of India in 1947. Inspired by the life of a woman who was born in Hyderabad, Sindh, grew up in Madras (Chennai) and lived the rest of her life as a Singaporean, the film juxtaposes fragmented recollections of the past with enduring practices of the present. However, the online shopping trend that has emerged as a result has provided them with new ideas. Hence, they decided not to renew the contract with Esplanade to reduce operating costs in order to survive this difficult period.
