Topic #1: The Enlightenment & Colonies Reading #1 English Documents English Colonist were first and foremost Englishmen. They were educated in British Politics and greatly influenced by the thinkers of the time. There are ideas about power were deeply rooted in England's very old, and very important, legal documents. Two of the documents that were critical in developing American Ideals were the Magna Carta of 1215 and the English Bill of Rights of 1688. •English nobles passed the Magna Carta in 1215 to limit King John's power. It represented one of England's first steps toward becoming a constitutional monarchy. •The English Bill of Rights was signed in 1689 and limited the power of the monarchy by placing the law above the ruler. King William and Queen Mary agreed to sign this document, which was written by Parliament, before becoming England's new monarchs. EOC ? 2
