ARTIST RESEARCH BLOG PORTFOLIO

FENG ZHU • Feng Zhu is an American concept and digital designer, he has worked with many companies such as Disney and Electronic Arts creating concepts and styles for them. He began his career in 1997 designing backgrounds themes for Hollywood films gradually building his portfolio he became well known and respected within the digital media industry. • The reason Feng Zhu’s style of work inspires and influences me is because he manipulates materials to design his work but uses the methods to full potential creating outcomes that are very detailed. • Another reason is that most of his work is sci-fi based which is one of my favourite styles of genre. • From an inspirational point of view Feng Zhu does what he loves for a career and that’s what makes me more motivated to achieve and follow.

ALBERTO SEVESO Alberto Seveso is an Italian digital graphic designer he has won many awards for his unique style of work. Alberto’s primary way of creating is by using digital software and photography he is now based in Bristol as an freelancer. • The main points of Alberto Seveso work that makes it inspiring is that it is unique and unexpected. • Another point is that the photography side and digital aspects are two art forms in one making it up to date and can be used to add more depth and life to an finished piece. • The variety of outcomes he creates is immense and helps to reach out to a wider audience which makes this art form more social.

SHADOW SKETCHING TUTORIALS

In this task I was set to sketch people using rough lines and differenttones to make out the detailing, this exercise has helped me to makequick and easy sketches to get an idea of concept drawing and what themain purpose of it is.Using this method has given me more thought and time for later onprogressions to a task or project in terms of styling and themes. In thebeginning I was getting used to using drawing tablets as I'm getting togrips of it I will be able to sketch much faster and with better control anddetailing.

DRAWING MOTION TUTORIALS

In this task I was set to drawing a person inmotion so I have found an image to takereference from and attempted to draw theperson walking using only a pencil, I wouldconsider myself drawing with manualmaterials such as pen and pencils mystrongest attribute so this task wasenjoyable. The way I started to draw out the personwalking is that like the reference image Idrew circles at each joint in the body thisway I can accurately draw out the arm andlegs in an realistic fashion so that it looksbelievable and most importantly that it isin movement also adding shading to partsthat are behind the moving parts adds tothe effect.

SILHOUETTE DRAWING In this task, I was set to create a silhouette object or character using broken down pieces and layering it together to create a bigger picture out of them. The process was done in photoshop drawing out the separate pieces and then dragging them onto another canvas to make the overall image. I have chosen to create a military plane using this method this was fairly easy because it consisted of basic shapes such as squares, triangles and ellipses. To add detail I have changed the tones of some of the shapes making them lighter and darker to define the shape of the plane and highlight the features of it. If I was to do this task again I would choose to do something more challenging and use a larger variety of shapes and tones.

TFC1303 VISUAL STUDIES FOR DIGITAL MEDIA DESIGN VISUAL LIBRARY

ART (FINE ART, GRAPHIC DESIGN, SCULPTURE,PAINTING, DRAWING, CONCEPTUAL ART )Here is a sculpture but not all people would think that • Not everyone can find or understand a meaningat first glance. The ropes are holding it together in the behind any sort of art, this skull has a tree trunkshape of a person sitting down in an enclosed position. and branches depicted on the side of it, to me itI find this interesting because it makes you think about represents new life after death or that everyonewhat you really see when you look closer at something comes from nature and returns to it after dying.and with an open mind.

BOOKS (IMAGINATION)Depending on who you are you might have a different The lord of the ring books are set in mystical lands withrepresentation and imagination to other people but that all kinds of animals and characters so how they lookeddoesn't really matter if you do books are meant to feed to the reader was their own thoughts. The Goosebumpsyou mind images, what they might be is up to the books I have read growing up without really knowingreader so it can be totally different to someone else's what each of the monsters look like the books really gointerpretation. into detail about the descriptions of them helping readers to imagine.

NATURE (OBSERVATION)Nature is everywhere but everything might not be where you live, here I have a series of images of natural scenery indifferent parts of the world, the sunflower may be boring but its how it inspires you. The forest scene helps you to visualisegrowth in particular trees and how the braches twine away from the trunk of the tree. Aquatic scenery is also great forvisualising water movement and life that lives in it. Desert lands most people would think are lifeless but it has the mostinteresting of animals and growth such as cacti.

TRAVEL (OBSERVATION)Traveling really helps to get an idea ofculture and how people around the worldinterpret different things. Buildings and citylife will no doubt look different to eachother also the scenery will be themed onwhat culture is based there you will alsosee many people of different backgroundsand what they seem to think is normal forthem to have.

MUSEUMS (OBSERVATION), • In my opinion museums are the best for collecting visual library influences they display a rang of artefacts going back thousands of years from many walks of life and countries, this will help to get an idea of what was common at the times and what is still here today

FILM AND GAMES• Films and games are representations of what the creator has imagined and is also great for leaning from to create your own ideas being from the past or far into the future.• There is just about any genre you can find on these making your visual library limitless and could help to target a certain gender or market.

LAYERED IMAGESThis is a method of manipulating and image by layering it over itself creating a distort and blurry look, this was done inPhotoshop by duplicating the image and changing the perspective of each on slightly of the original image then it is up toyou how wild you choose to go, the screen feature is used this is found in the drop down menu above the layers the defaultbeing on normal. For these set of images I chose to do planets in space to see which colours would work better, in my opinion the blue toneimage looks the most effective it is almost like jumping into hyper speed as everything around you starts to blur.

I decided to do the Eifel tower inmultiple colours to the what theoutcome would look like, the pacificcolours I chose where neon based pink, purple and green I found out thesecolours work well with each other andkind of looks like an 80s leg warmertheme colour. This Jaws poster is already scary but bydistorting the image it makes it harderto see what is lurking in the depths andthen to apply a deep dark blue washover it gives it a cold and numb look.

This palm beach image already has all the warm colours of a sunset so I didn’t change much only satirise thecolour just a little to be able to bring out the clouds more so it would be easier to see this effect. The city scape image I probably altered to most by increasing the contrast and brightness so it looks like thebuildings are all joined together showing a contrast against the white background.
