• The text: Children and the new face of war. Ismael was fourteen years old and in boarding school when he was recruitedinto an army fighting in Sierra Leone’s civil war. He was told that his entirefamily had been killed and that he could seek revenge against the killers byjoining the fight. He fought for three years. He was not afraid; on the contrary, day after day, he grew comfortable with a gun. “The gun was the power in yourhand,” said Ismael at a UN Special Session on children. The killing eventuallysickened him. When the war ended, Ismael was placed in a UNICEF-supportedrehabilitation center, but made only slow progress at first. He defied his teachersand guardians. “We thought that civilians had no authority over us,” he said. However, later something happened in his mind and he started listening tothe teachers. Ismael spent eight months at the center. In addition, he went totherapy which brought up enormous shame and guilt. Gradually he reintegratedinto society and now studies in the United States.

Ismael’s story of being forced into an army as a child is not extraordinary. Some 300,000 children in some 30 conflicts across the globe are fighting inarmies and rebel movements. The UN now wants to make it “intolerable”. Preventing the recruitment ofchildren and intensifying rehabilitation of child soldiers are essential.
