7£e :Pas! Jordan High 1915 How do we say good-bye to this historic monument that has been the ~ .,Beetdiggers' home for eighty years? The day when we will close our doors foreveris approaching, yet somehow, we realize that no door will close on our memories,no door will close on our traditions that have been upheld with honor and pride. Hollow echoes of the shouting crowds will settle on the playing fields; darkenedscore boards will reflect only silence. No lockers will slam in unison to shouts andlaughter. No colorful bits of crepe paper and banners will cling hopefully to thewalls. No announcements will crackle into crowded classrooms; no pencil stubsor discarded history notes will lie abandoned in corners. Our school song expresses it well: \"Jordan High School, dear to my heart. Sadthe day when we have to part.\" Dear old Jordan High; we will leave you, but we willnever forget you. 7£e?resen! A TIMELESS LEGACY Upon its completion and dedication on November 30, 1914, Jordan High School became a center of activity anda place for increasing knowledge and wisdom. It has been the birthplace of countless life-long friendships and endlessassociations between people who were bound together by a common theme: the Beetdigger. The legacy, left by thiSinstitution and those who have dwelt within, is timeless, equaled by none. Will the next e1ght generations contmue torealize the power that lies within the pride and traditions of those gone before? The next few pages of this yearbookare dedicated to finding for ourselves those who paved the way that we may be more fully aware of the responsibilitiesassociated with calling ourselves Beetdiggers. At a meeting held by the Jordan District School Board on Tuesday, June 23, 1908, Enoch Jorgensen was chosenas the first man to be the principal of Jordan High School. The location for this first year was the basement of an L.D Schurch building m \"East Jordan,\" known today as Old Sandy. Fifty-one freshman and seven sophomores attendedthe first day of regular classwork on Wednesday, September 9, 1908. Education at this location continued until the nev.building, our building, was finally finished in mid-November 1914. When the new structure was ready, President W.O. Kuhre of the L.D.S. Jordan Stake was called upon to dedicateit. After his remarks, addresses were delivered by Utah Governor William Spry, State Superintendent A.C. Matheson.and the president of the board of education, J.R. Ralins. Classwork began in the 235' x 166' x 45' structure on December1, 1914. The thirty classrooms were used for instruction in domestic science, domestic arts, vocational training. Iagriculture, commerce, chemistry, physics, and art. The gymnasium measured 60' x 90', and the auditorium had 901permanent seats. The shop and vocational buildings that now exist were added around 1938, the north gymnasium was built in 1939and the P.E. building (pit) was added in 1956. Jordan High School has survived two world wars, numerous earthquakes, tragic and disastrous accidents, even thedemise of the surrounding beetfields. For its stamina and endurance we praise the building we proudly call our ownMay the following pages provide a brief glimpse of the many generations that have left their mark on this hallowedinstitution.a160 A Timeless Legacy
