Moving toward a Sustainable and Resilient Healthcare GPO is a state enterprise operating in accordance with a mission aimed at responding to national health policies through the research and development, production, supply and reserve of medicines and medical supplies, to support the country’s public health system. This corresponds to the organization’s vision, which is “To be possessed of innovative products which create value and sustainability, in order to be the foremost organization in the country maintaining national security in terms of medicines and medical supplies.” GPO works to continuously develop its business to ensure that it is competitive, affords self-sustainability, operates under good governance, maintains the price of medicines and medical supplies at a level which ensures patients have ease of access, and generates innovation in regard to medicines and medical supplies, as well as herbal products, so as to be able to respond to the needs of Thai society. GPO’s successful operations in the year 2020 resulted in a total sales value of 18,455 million baht, an increase of 527 million baht, representing a net profit of 1,437 million baht, an increase of 336 million baht, or 31%, on the year 2019. In addition, an important key performance indicator is the percentage of its budget that the government sector saves in the procurement of medicines from GPO. This indicator is determined by a comparison of the budget which the government sector spends on the purchase of social medicines*/essential drugs produced or procured by GPO in contrast to the budget that the government would use were it to have to procure these medicines at market price; in 2020 this equaled 67.54%, representing a saving to the Ministry of Public Health of 5,568 million baht on the cost of 8,244 million baht had these medicines been purchased through the private sector. GPO has been focusing on proactive marketing development in order to enhance customer and stakeholder satisfaction; this was required as a result of the organization expanding its markets for medicines, herbal medicines and natural products during 2020. GPO has also conducted research and development into new pharmaceutical products. In 2020, there were 7 new pharmaceutical products launched and 6 pharmaceutical products were submitted for registration. The overall results of GPO’s customer survey showed that the top 3 expectations customers had of GPO had been successfully met, these being product delivery with a score of 4.66 points, the response to the need for medicines/medical supplies for use in emergency situations with a score of 4.59 points and the quality, consistency of quality and efficacy of medicines and medical supplies with a score of 4.57 points. GPO has increased its production capability and raised the level of its production standards to meet international specifications by increasing the efficiency of its production in order to accelerate problem solving and reduce production time, as well as to increase the efficiency of both its employees and machines. Important projects undertaken or ongoing during 2020 comprised the construction of the Manufacturing Plant Phase 2 project, the project for collaboration with PTT Public Company Limited in the construction of a manufacturing plant for anti-cancer medicines, the project for the production of an inactivated COVID-19 vaccine, the project for the construction of a new warehouse for medicines and medical supplies, a plan for the development of the Thai Herbal Extraction Plant to an international standard, a plan for the research and development of herbal products for the elderly, a plan for the research and development of products manufactured using medical cannabis extract, a plan for the development of the customer service center into a One Stop Service structure and a plan for the development of a sales channel via Digital Marketing. GPO has developed its human capital systematically via the provision of both knowledge and skills relating to business change and has used digital technology to assist in the support of human capital management and development. Corporate values and culture have been strengthened and employees are encouraged to be disciplined and to be possessed of the necessary ethics to ensure a happy and healthy organization. This results in GPO being able to operate effectively in the support of medicines and medical supplies on a national level and ensures a better quality of life for the Thai people, as quality medicines can be easily and sustainably accessed, throughout all regions of the country.
