Editor’s Note This edition of the chronicle includes students’ contribution in the form of poetry. Quite a few were eager to express themselves and they indeed have vivid imagination coupled with wit and insight. “Just A Game” by Sara is a humorous depiction of the sorry state of affairs in the world today- with myopic leaders lacking vision, and largely mute and helpless public. Similar in the theme is “Sach” by Ms Seema Madan. Her “An Ode to My Teacher”reflects the definition of poetry given by William Wordsworth: Spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling…recollected in tranquility.Another student,Mehakdeep has come up with a very inspiring poem “A Bit of Motivation”. It is good that children still retain interest in literacy and artistic pursuits, otherwise in today’s world of “Algorithmic Art” and “Artificial Intelligence” such activities had started appearing antiquated. With quantum leaps in artificial intelligence, such technology has been developed that enables machines to problem solve and self-regulate in entirely new ways. It took humans a million years to progress from discovering fire to inventing wheel, then only a few thousand years to invent printing press, then only a few hundred years to build telescope…in ever shortened spans of time we bounded from steam engine to automobiles to space shuttle, only two decades to start modifying our DNA- it is interesting to note that the timeline of human development is compressing. It means that today you are the most evolved generation that rides the crest of tsunami of knowledge and information! You must realize your potential and expand your horizons- you owe it to yourself. We have faith in such amongst you who have followed the school motto “Inspiration, Aspiration, perspiration” in spirit. Prerna Arora of XII Commerce, who has been awarded the most prestigious award “Principal’s Trophy” is one such student. Recipient of the “Best Sportsman” award is Amit of class XII Commerce who did the school proud by playing at the international level. With him as captain, this year once again “NPS Mgictions” scripted success by winning all the Basketball tournaments in Chandigarh. Our Football team too has been going places- in Oorja Cup it secured second position and six of the players made it to the nationals. Mr Anuj Vohra and Mr Puranchand Joshi took the initiative of making a girls’ team in Football as well and drew an overwhelming response as they announced it. Girls from classes II to IX have been religiously attending coaching sessions in the morning since July. They played a few friendly matches with other school teams this year. All the best to our young girls. Though scores of children score above 90% in different subjects in class XII,it is very prestigious to be among top 1% in a subject. Our congratulations to Aditya Sharma and Nikhil Jogta for achieving this distinction in English and Physical Education respectively in the Board Exams. A Visit to GMCH Sector 32 (A Peek into the Medical World) VISIT A group of 183 students from classes VI to XII of the School had the opportunity to visit Govt. Medical College and Hospital- Sec- 32, Chandigarh on 20 January 2018. It was an immensely informative experience for students. Conducted in two sessions: “Talk by the Doctor’’ and “Specimen view” session, it commenced with a talk by Dr. C.S Gautam- Prof. and Head of the Pharmacology Department. Based on Herb-Drug interaction the talk included herbal and Allopathic medicine as well as side effects of self- medication. He believes that doctors are not God but they are ‘the god men’ who can save the patients only if the latter follow prescription and advice. He also enlightened us about the pros and cons of home remedies which were the best medicines for our grandmothers. He bust some myths as well. The most astonishing are as follows: . “Mulathi” of consumed in excess could lead to increase in the BP as it contains Steroids. . Tamarind, if consumed in excess could lead to ulcers. . “Babas” of our country swear by benefits of “cinnamon” but it can affect appetite. . Vitamin A, C, E, if taken without prescription can cause health problems. . Excessive intake of Garlic and papaya may cause platelet dysfunction. We believe that any “imported” drug with an exotic name is safe, but Dr. Gautam revealed a shocking fact about a drug named “Fang-Ji” for weight loss, which affected severely kidneys of 48 women. Seven women were hospitalized for treatment at the PGI. He averred, “Pill for every ill is not recommended.” Next students viewed organ specimens: The Brain weighing 1.5 kg, the Small Intestine infested with adult worms due to consumption of impure water or food, Kidneys and liver, Heart, Human Skeleton, Diabetic Hands and Feet, The Digestive system, Lungs afflicted with cancer due to cigarettes, and the most moving specimen of all: a seven month old male foetus with developed hands, feet and facial features! The next talk was by Prof. Tanvi who explained why ‘O’ blood group is the universal donor-it is because the group has no antigen on its surface compared to the other groups, eg group ‘B’ has antigen ‘B’ on its surface. The last and the most important session for the girls was conducted by Dr. Reeti Mehra, a gynaecologist who spoke at length on menstrual hygiene. She made girls aware about the emotional and physical changes, the “taboo” in the society, the value of our freedom and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. She touched Eating Disorders too: Anorexia, Bulimia, Obesity as well as depression. She stressed upon the importance of the teenage vaccination, of Rubella (MMR) Booster, Hepatitis B and cervical cancer. “Girls must learn to say No: Say no to drugs, Smoking and drinking as they take away thinking ability.” The visit was indeed a great thought provoking and learning experience for all. We are beholden to Dr. Simarpreet Singh, an old Student of the School who organized it. Shreya Thakur XII-Commerce. 58th Milestone 2017-2018, The New Public School 2 3

Social Initiative CHILD INTERNATIONAL SUMMER VILLAGE (CISV) INTERNATIONAL YOUTH MEETING POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT The New Public School, Sector 18, Chandigarh hosted CISV International Youth Meeting Discipline is really a debatable complex Camp from 28th December 2017 to 4th January 2018 conducted by St. Kabir Public School, phenomenon. Many parents/teachers think Chandigarh supported by CISV Maharashtra Chapter. discipline means meting out punishment. But surprisingly, the most effective Participating countries were Thailand, Sweden, Norway, USA and India. Each delegation discipline typically doesn't involve any comprised of 6 children (3 boys and 3 girls) of age group 14/15 yrs escorted by one adult leader. punishment at all but instead focuses on positive reinforcement when children are being good. So discipline is about teaching that changes things. Discipline is more difficult in the teenage years as children struggle to gain independence. The best way to handle the problem is parental monitoring and involvement. The best methods of keeping teenagers out of trouble are knowing where they are, knowing who is with them and spending time with them regularly. Make them understand that the freedomthey get is directlyrelated to how they demonstrate responsibility. Parents need to understand that reinforcing good behaviour is far more time consuming than punishment. Actually busy parents juggling work and family demands often are distracted by cell Phones, T.V and other media. Parents should themselves cultivate the habit of reading newspapers, good literature/books and inculcate this habit in their children too right from the beginning. When a child/student talks to you that he/she doesn't like to read. Then say: Keep looking. You haven't found a book that speaks directly to you. Moreover good literature should be studied for a richer & fuller life, to channelize your energies in a better way. Every book you read, changes you whether you realise it or not, so read good literature to lead a meaningful life. Literature unlocks the culture of the time period, allows us to interpret our own life and emotion. Literature is a living, breathing manifestation of life. It changes one's perception. It keeps you busy as 'An empty mind is a devil's workshop.' Encourage children to read A.P.J Abdul Kalam's Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, Indomitable spirit. They should go for sports, books on Art and Culture. Always remember, \"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one\". Passing Clouds PASSING CLOUDS JUST: A Game The inhumans have loaded taxes upon us, We’ve shut our eyes and gulped down the losses, But i see something funny. For their speeches spoke of nationwide prosperity. Even though they see the terror and fuss, All they’ve really brought upon us, The gutsy schmucks are making money. Are double fines with added penalties. Their silence and stealth is like that of a hungry cat, The rules and regulations they laid, But i see something comic. With forceful dreams and yearnings. Their presence alone is injurious to health, The insensitives are undismayed, Its about time they should stop it. Those bozos are snatching earnings! Amidst the care and the “respect” they’ve “earned”, Its a rather simple game they impose, I see something droll. Which comes out as pretty funny. those cars are from the fines we paid, All you can do is shut your eyes, I wish could just have a great fall. And let the gutsy schmucks make money! They sip and slurp their expensive wines, Sara Khurana But i see something strange. XI Commerce They feed on the countless workers’ lives, By cutting down their monthly wage. You should expect them to stop this by now, But cant you spot something bizarre? Their rapacious minds are still hungry for power, As they smoke their expensive cigars. 58th Milestone 2017-2018, The New Public School 2 5
